The Reading Report ofThe Lord ofThe RingThelordofringswaswrittenbyJohnTolkienin1955.HemadeupamysticalworldcalledMiddleEarth.Andthestartofthestory,isnotaperson,butanobject,aring.TheringallowsonetocontrolahostofotherringshandeddowntothedifferentpeoplesofMiddleEarth:threeringsbelongtotheimmortalelves;seventothedwarfs;andnineringstomortalhumans.Theringthatrulesalltheothers,forgedusingthefiresofMountDoombytheevilWizardSauron,givesitsholdersomuchpowerthatitcorruptsallthosewhoseektowearit,eventhepurest.Ofcourse,therearesomepeoplesthataremorepurethanothers.Humansgenerallyseemincapableofwearingitwithoutbeingcorruptedbyitsinfluence.Butthereexistsadiminutivepeople,theHobbits,whodoseematleastcapableofcarryingitwithoutbeingpollutedtoomuch.SothefatehadcometoaHobbit-Frodo,whohadtocarrythisRingdeepintotheshadowsofMordorandunmakeitintheplacepreciselyitwasmade.IfthisRingexists,theworldmayfallinthePoweroftheDarkLord.SoFrodo,withhisgardenerSam,startedanamazingjourneytowardsthehope.Althoughitisastoryofsavingtheworld,theLordoftheringsdoesnotdeliberatelyhighlightheroism.Boththebigmanandthelittleguyaregiventemptations.Thetestsgiventothelittleguyoftenmattertopersonalinterest,orpersonalsafety,butthatdoesn'tmeanlittletesthasnoeffectontheoverallsituation.EverytimewhenBilboandFrodowhorepresentlittleguysyieldtothetemptation,theytriggeracrisis.Becausesauroncanfindthelocationoftheringbytakingadvantageoftheirweakness.ThebigmanintheLordoftherings,whetherthemage,ortheelfqueen,ortheheroofthehumanwouldalsobetempted.Theyarenotomnipotent,theymaymore likelyyieldtotemptation.Theyneedtostrugglethesameasthelittleguy.Theonlydifferencebetweenthebigandthesmallisthatwhenthebigmanmettemptation,theyhadmorenoblereasons---letususethering'sabilitytofightforthejustice,againstSauron.Thereasonistoomagnificent,andhardtoresist.Inthisway,theauthorTolkienmakethebigandsmall,smartandstupid,weakandstrongallliveintothestory.Theysavetheworldandalsosavethemselves.Weakandstrong,canhavethesameself-expectation,whichpushestheworldforward.Weakpeopledogreatthings,notbecauseofitsability,butbecausetheymustdo.
