Should children be given pocket money? With the sharp increase in the average family income, parents tend to give their children a handsome sum of allowance. Undoubtedly, with such a big sum of money, children can enjoy a more colorful life; however, we have to admit that pocket money also produces some negative effects on the grow th of children. As a result there has been always a fierce argument over giving allowance to children. From some parents' point of view, giving children some pocket money has numerous pros. Above everything else, it helps raise a money savvy child because children will understand the value of money and learn how to use the money responsibly. Secondly, children learn to set goals and plan for the future. Thirdly, pocket money helps children develop a correct sense of responsibility and learn to make decision on one's own. By giving children an allowance you are giving them the responsibility to spend their own money the way they want. On the other hand, some teachers and parents are opposed to giving children allowance. To start with, children are likely to foster a money-oriented mentality. The obsession with the idea of making more money corrupts children's mind. Secondly, Children may primp and compare their allowance with their peers, thus leading to some psychological effects. Besides, The money may be used in an improper way such as playing games, gambling or even drug-taking. It is quite natural that people retain diverse attitudes towards pocket money. 4s far as I am concerned, I am in favor of giving children some pocket money. Money is something everyone has to deal with sometime in their life, and how they handle their finances can impact every aspect of their life. It is necessary for parents to teach their children about th e value of money, saving and responsibility. The Two-Day Policy 1. Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic The Two-Day Weekend. You should write at least 100 words and you should base your composition on the outline (given in Chinese) below: 1. The Two-Day Weekend The benefits that the two day weekend brings to college students are too much to be listed. To begin with, it provides the students with more spare time to rest after a week's study. Besides, it enables the students to have enough time to take part in various kinds of sport activities and social activities. Furthermore, it gives the students adequate time to plan and prepare their life and study next week. However, the problems that the two day weekend brings are also obvious. Some students feel that they have nothing to do but to sleep. Other students indulge in such entertainments as watching TV, seeing films and playing video games. Still other students unwisely exhaust themselves by excessive outdoor games, such as football, outing, etc. In conclusion, most students don't know how to make good and scientific use of the long weekend. I think, to spend a meaningful weekend, we students should plan our leisure scientifically. It is not wise to play for two days on end, nor is it wise to rest, or study for such along time. We should bear in mind that entertainment, rest and study should alternate. 2. The Two-Day weekends The advance of science and technology makes people have more free time. Nowadays, we have 5-workday week. Therefore, our university and college students can have much more leisure time. Sports fans can play in the playground. Some students who are interested in social work can join many clubs. Of course, we also can get a part time job to gain some work experience. There is a growing concern over the students who don't put too much emphasis on study. Some students always idle away their time, playing cards, drinking, gambling. These problems are really serious. Taking into account all these factors, we can safely come to the conclusion that the students will waste more time if they don't make good use of it. As a student, busy as I am with my study, I also do many interesting things such as reading novels, w riting articles at the two-day weekends. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. It's really true. 3. Two-Day Weekend-双休日 It is always a pleasure to make plans for the coming weekend with your family and friends. Just imagine you have two whole days ahead to be relaxed, you cannot help feeling excited. There are many interesting activities on weekends. You can go to the beach, swimming freely like a fish and bathing in bright sunshine: or you can go to the country, walking in the pasture dotted with wild flowers, listening to bird singing. How romantic that can be! As an alternative, you can visit famous mountains, parks and historical sites; you can also enjoy sports and games; or you can stay at home and focus your attention on reading or listening to soft music for several hours at a stretch. After two days’ active rest, you feel energetic and ready for hard work ahead. However, some people still waste their weekends. For example, they indulge themselves in vulgar activities such as gambling, playing cards or watching silly TV programs day and night, drinking heavily and sleeping for a whole day or fooling around in lousy places. Instead of having a nice weekend and being relaxed, they usually end up exhausted on Monday morning. I am wondering, after the two-day weekend becomes a routine in our life and loses its freshness, how many people can really enjoy the weekend and have a good time. 4. Ever since the change of the two-day weekend, we college students have enjoyed it tremendously. For example, some students spend the time taking part in various social activities. Some go into middle schools to practice teaching. There’s no doubt that the tw o-day weekend gives us the opportunities for learning from real life as well as from textbooks. But some students tend to idle away their time. At every weekend, they would go back home located in another city. Some haunt cinemas or go window-shopping and some just stay in bed daydreaming. In their eyes, weekend is only a time for relaxation. As for me, I’ll not waste the two days that way. Being a law student, I’ll go into t he court at the weekend and participate in conducting defense or other activities in the trying of a case. Only by practicing can I be fully prepared for my future job. 5. 双休日(Two-day Weekend) As is known to all, we now have two day weekends, which means we have one raore day for vest after a week's work and study. In this way we can have more time for recollection and relaxation. With more free time, some can do cleaning, shopping, exercising, traveling, etc. Some can have a chance to find a part time job and gain more work experience. As the saying goes, "there are two sides to everything." Two day weekends also bring with it some problems. Those students who lack self-control spend too much time playing on weekends and neglect rest. As a result, on Monday morning they fall asleep in class. On the other hand those who work part time jobs are somewhat distracted from their study and concentrate more on making money. I think we should plan cur time so as to have adequate time for both work and play. I will do moderate exercise and some reading as well in order to be more energetic and better prepared for next-week's study. Car or Bicycle 1. The Advantage of Bicycle Riding 「骑单车的好处」 Bicycle riding has many advantages. It is the least expensive way of traveling apart from walking. If you travel by bicycle, you don't have to buy gas as you must when you drive cars. Besides, it develops much less mechanical troubles than a car. bicycle riding is especially good for health. It is good exercise. If you go to work by riding a bicycle instead of driving or taking a bus, you can have a better chance of getting enough exercise you need everyday. Bicycling is also good for our envir onment. It is less noisy and does not pollute the air. I am glad to have ridden a bicycle to school when I studied in the high school. 2. Bicycle or Car Americans like to go out by car. Although more and more Chinese own cars, most Chinese still like to ride bicycles. This is determined by a lot of factors. As we all know, the bike advances slowly by manpower, but it can be placed where it is convenient. However, as for the car, although it can run fast by engine, it must be parked at parking lots. Most Americans live in the suburb which is Far fi'om urban areas and their working places. So they need cars to go shopping and go to work. And they also like traveling far. Thus a car brings them great convenience. On the contrary, most Chinese live near their working area and markets. They don' t need a car to go to work or go shopping. I w ould like to ride a bike, because it costs little and is easy to use and because a bike won' t cause pollution, which is most important. 3. Bicycle—-an Important Means of Transport in China(1991.1) Bicycles, as a means of transport, are indispensable companions of most Chinese. Each Chinese family possesses at least one bicycle. China is therefore called “the B icycle Kingdom”. The popularity of bicycles in China, I think, is mainly due to the economy of the country and its people. China, as one of the developing countries, has no financial potential to expand its roads and to manufacture so many cars to satisfy the need of so many Chinese. Compared with cars, bicycles, however, have their own distinctive advantages. Firstly, they are very convenient. For their small size, they do not need special parking space. They can be parked almost everywhere. For their light weight, they can be carried upstairs and downstairs. Secondly, driven by man power, they don’t need fuel. Hence they have nothing to do with air pollution and energy crisis. Finally, as China is still a developing country, most people can afford a bicycle rather than a car. With so many advantages, bicycles will remain to be an important means of transport in China in the many years to come. But I think with the rapid development of Chinese economy, more and more Chinese will own a car though cars will never completely substitute bicycles in the future. Haste Makes Waste "Haste makes waste" is an English proverb which has equivalent expressions in many languages. It has become a precept whose value is universally accepted. This proverb can be verified by many other proverbs" There is no royal road in learning", "Rome was not built in a day". Anyway it means that one should not be overanxious for quick results, otherwise he will fail. If one wants to be a scholar, he should make persistent efforts, burying himself in books. If he wants to take sea shortcut, he will never become a scholar. If one wants to be president of a country, he should first display his remarkable ability in his routine work so that his ability will be recognized and accepted by others. However, if he is impatient for success, he will never realize his goal. If a man courts a woman, he should try to win her love gradually. He should not expect to win her heart within a day, otherwise he will never get true love. In my daily life, I always want things to be done quickly, however, the results tend to turn out just the opposite of what I wish. As the saying goes "more haste, less speed", baste never helps, instead it makes waste. Once I was in a hurry trying to catch the train to Shanghai. I packed up and put all the things I would need into a suitcase and locked it. Then I took a taxi and boarded the train on time. When I arrived in Shanghai and was comfortably settled in a hotel, I tried to open my suitcase. To my great disappointment, I found I did not have the key with me. I had left it at home without my knowing it. Another Time I was trying to fill a bottle with hot water to warm my feet before going to bed. In a hurry, I took the bottle full of "cold water" and poured it out. While I was pouring and enjoying the sound the liquid made while coming out of the bottle, my brother shouted at me, "Hey, you are pouring out my liqor!" In conclusion, one should follow in order and advance step by step and should not be impatient for success, otherwise he will suffer a setback. Haste Makes Waste From my own experience, I draw a painful lesson H ASTE MAKES WASTE. There is an old saying, "Haste makes waste." It's the experience of our foreface theirs, howler, it is correct in many cases even today. Usually, if you act faster, you can reach your goals earlier. But it sin't always the case. If you emphasize only on speed but ignore the quality of your work, your effect will be the opposite. The hastier you arc, the slower you achieve completeness and success. Suppose you are preparing for your final examination. There are a lot of exercises to do and many notes to memorize. The fact that you have no enough time intakes you very worried. So you have to read and write continuously, without rest, without sleep, with out relaxation. The result is that your brain is less and less efficient, your process is slower and slower, and the situation goes from bad to worse. All your efforts lead to nothing. On the contrary, if you do your preparations with a calculated plan and carry out the plan step by step, your work will be effective. Consequently, you will take part in the exams confidently with good preparations. Whatever you do, please remember the saying—Haste makes waste. If you under stand it and apply it to your study or work. you'll benefit a lot from it 有志者事竟成(Where There Is a Will There Is a Way)1、坚强的意志是成功的重要保证。 One of the most important things to success is a firm.reso1ution. A great man is al ways one who has a firm resolution and an inflexible spirit. One will never succeed all his life without a firm will to get the final victory. As a rule, great tasks are accomplished by men of strong will. For example, Dr. Sun Yates set the Chinese people free from the rule of the Sing Dynasty through a long period of hard struggle. Many of his attempts failed and many of bus followers were killed, but he had an inflexible spirit and stacked to his cause. Finally, he made the revolution of 1911 a success. A student who has no resolution will never succeed in his studies. The same is true of men in all walks of life. We must have a firm resolution first, if we wish to succeed. We must always remember the old saying that where there is a will there is a way. Where There Is a Will, There Is a Way This statement means that if you are really determined to do something, however difficult it might be, you will find a way of doing it at last. The point is that you must have the will if you are to succeed. Ninety percent of the failures that occur are due to the fact there is no strong will. Many people simply say that they want something, but they do not make any attempt to achieve it. Thus, instead of getting it, they use the weakest excuses to explain the situation away. On many occasions, too, people probably say much more than the truth about difficulties, making the objective impossible to reach. In fact, if one has the will to succeed, then the size of the obstacles will seem smaller, and one can achieve one's goals. If one wants to succeed, he should not allow obstacles or failures to prevent him from acting. He should learn to make his will stronger and to determine himself to achieve his ambitions. One's w ill should be strong enough to wash or sweep away the difficulties in one's path to success. If one really has a strong will, then, somehow or other, one will find a way to get what one wants, or reaches where one aims at arriving. Many a famous man succeeded in arriving in their high social position because they had the will to overcome obstacles which were seemingly too difficult to be passed. They have managed to succeed because they controlled the will which helped them to achieve fame. From w hat I say above, we can see that the main thing which one needs is will. Weak-willed people never make it to the top. A strong willed person, on the other hand, will stand up against all odds and will make it a point to succeed at last. Practice Makes Perfect The saying that practice makes perfect means that after you have plenty of practice in what you are doing, you will be perfect in it. He who practices a lot will master the skill more quickly than he who seldom or hardly practices.(解释成语) (举例说明1)For example, when we learn English, we have to learn grammar, words, expressions and so on. The most important thing may be how to put w hat we have learned into practice. If you only learn the grammar rules by heart and don't do enough exercises, it is certain that you can't understand them perfectly. But if you practice a lot, maybe you will understand them more deeply and you can find some good methods of applying them. Memorizing English words whenever time permits, we can easily memorize them and can even find a way to memorize them more quickly. In order to achieve a better comprehension, 111 take my own experience as an example. When I began to learn English, I found it really difficult for me to catch the speaker. With great determination, I got down to listening to a large variety of Eng-lish tapes. After practicing again and again, I found it no more hard to be a good listener. (举例说明2)Typing .When people first learn to type, they are not familiar with the keyboard and can't type very fast. But as long as they keep practicing, they're sure to have both their typing speed and accuracy improved. (举例说明3)There is another example. A famous singer can sing very welt. Of course, his talent is very important, but practice is necessary. It is necessary to practice to make the singer sing better and better. All of us are familiar with the story how Wang Xizhi prac-tised his Chinese character handwriting.. All of us cheered for Li Xiaoshuang, an excellent gymnast who won great honor for our motherland. Probably, someone will be wondering: "They're skillful enough, but why did they take so much time and trouble to practice every day!" Because they wanted to be perfect. (结论)It is evident that practice is important for everybody. If you want to improve your study and work, you should remember that practice makes perfect. Nowadays many people complain about the poor achievements in study. Some eager to know other people's secret to success. Thinking they must have some special abilities in study. However they overlook the importance of practice. In fact, only by practicing a lot can we become skillful in doing everything. Do you know how a baby learns to speak? He practices its mother tongue day and night and finally becomes influent in it. So we should always remember that there is no shortcut to success. No one can become an expert without practicing a lot. We should first burn the hardship in our study and then we can enjoy the fruits of our efforts. A famous saying goes that "practice makes perfect". It means that when people are learning to do something new, they will be good at it only after having lots of practice over and over again. I have had such experiences for many times. In learning English, it's especially true. To learn English well, we must read more, speak more and write more. At the beginning, I couldn't speak English fluently, so I took every chance to practice, such as going to the English corner, talking to foreigners, reading English aloud in the morning, and even speaking to myself from time to time. I kept the practice for a long time and to my delight, my spoken English was much better than before. It's also the same in English listening and writing. I like the saying——practice makes perfect, which encourages me to practice more till I reach perfect situations. There is a piece of old saying "Practice Makes Perfect." Is that true? Of course, it is! A graduate with master's degree was assigned to my mother's company. Having not got any experience, though, he was placed great hopes on as he was well-educated. However, af-ter some time, people in the company found he couldn't w ork well even as an accountant. My mother talked about this to me, asking for my comments, and my reply was: "Because he doesn't understand that practice makes perfect!" It is everyone's great desire to gain more knowledge. The more, the better. But does having more knowledge mean being perfect? I'm afraid not. Knowledge is something we have learnt, w hile ability is the way we use our knowledge to serve us or to solve some problems. Therefore, 111 say ability is perfect. Is it true that ability comes together with a newly-born ba-by? No! How can we change our knowledge into ability then? Through practice! Nothing but practice can help us! Ladies and gentlemen, practice makes perfect is not only my own motto but also a piece of truth. If everyone could have a bet-ter understanding of it, our society would be perfect! Practice makes perfect. This self-evident proverb means doing something repeatedly is the only way to become very good at it. That is to say, practice makes a difference between an inferior performance and a perfect one. Learning a foreign language like English is a case in point. You can take in a lot of information about it, such as its pronunciation, vocabulary, sentence structures, grammatical rules, idioms, and usages, but all these tend to quickly escape from your memory. Therefore, you must practice listening, reading, speaking and writing so as to remember them and become fluent in the language. The truth represented by “practice makes perfect” can also be found in other areas. A skillful tailor is one who has certainly made a large variety of clothes, while a competent surgeon is one who has performed a great number of operations. Engage yourself in performing tasks instead of just learning about them, and you will learn to become a perfect doer. 1.Practice makes perfect. 2.God helps those who help themselves. 3.Easier said than done. 4.Where there is a will, there is a way. 5.One false step will make a great difference. 6.Slow and steady wins the race. 7.A fall into the pita gain in your wit. 8.Experience is the mother of wisdom. 9.All work and no play makes jack a dull boy. 10.Beauty without virtue is a rose without fragrance. 11.More hasty, less speed. 12.It's never too old to learn. 13.All that glitters is not gold. 14.A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. 15.Look before you leap. 16.Rome was not built in a day. 17.Great minds think alike. 18.well begun, half done. 19.It is hard to please all. 20.Out of sight, out of mind. 21.Facts speak plainer than words. 22.Call back white and white back. 23.First things first. 24.Ill news travels fast. 25.A friend in need is a friend indeed. 26.live not to eat, but eat to live. 27.Action speaks louder than words. 28.East or west, home is the best. 29.It's not the gay coat that makes the gentleman. 30.Beauty will buy no beef. 31.Like and like make good friends. 32.The older, the wiser. 33.Do as Romans do in Rome. 34.An idle youth, a needy age. 35.As the tree, so the fruit. 36.To live is to learn, to learn is to better live.
