KIN INSIDER
Paul Resnick, Editor
What should have been a routine flight from San Diego to Miami-was anything but! Dr.
Lorena Martin, a recent graduate from the doctoral program in Kinesiology and Sport
Sciences, was taking a holiday break from her first post-doctoral position at the University of
California, San Diego. She was coming to visit her parents for the Christmas holidays on
Flight 1042 direct for Miami. !
Lorena was all but asleep in the aisle seat of row 25 in what seemed
like an ordinary flight when things suddenly changed! A female
passenger started screaming, “He’s
dying!” “He’s dead!” Hearing her
screams, other alarmed passengers figured
something was very wrong and suddenly
half the plane was screaming in fear. !
Lorena saw the woman who was screaming start shaking the male
passenger next to her in the aisle seat of row 24. He did not move!
Without hesitation Lorena stood up and went to help the passenger
who sat listless in his seat. The man was too large for Lorena to pick
up alone, so she asked for help, and with the assistance of another
passenger, they were able to get the passenger on the floor of the
cabin. Lorena checked for a pulse and immediately determined he

needed CPR. She immediately went to work, performing
CPR. Within a short time, the gentleman started
breathing and his heart started to beat on its own. !
It was determined shortly thereafter that instead of
conducting an emergency landing, the plane would be
able to make it to Miami where an ambulance would be
ready to take the ill passenger to the hospital. !
Lorena returned to her seat knowing she just saved a
man’s life! There’s no question her quick action and
willingness to get involved, saved a life at 30,000 feet in
the air. Lorena certainly embodies the UM spirit.
Thank you Lorena, for your heroic actions! !
Sincerely, !
Dr. Arlette Perry, Chair

Preparing for an exam can be extremely challenging. When
athletic training majors begin preparing to take the Board of
Certification exam, most students use the textbook Athletic
Training Exam Review: A Student Guide to Success, Fifth Edition.
The text most students use is co-authored by Department of
Kinesiology and Sport Sciences faculty, Karen Lew. The fifth
edition, published in the Fall of 2013, features University of
Miami athletic training students on the front cover. This is the
fourth book Lew has published since becoming an author with
Slack Publishing Company
The new edition of the book includes 1200 multiple choice
questions, critical thinking questions, and an online testing
component that will assist students as they prepare for their
computer based exam. The book provides detailed reasoning
behind the correct answer that will assist students in highlighting
their individual strengths and weaknesses. The new text also
features a variety of changes that reflect current trends in academic
testing, patient evaluation, and critical thinking.

Launched in 2010, the Dolphins Cycling Challenge
(DCC) is a two-day tri-county charity cycling event.
The purpose of the DCC is to increase cancer
awareness, encourage healthy hobbies, and raise
funds for the University of Miami Sylvester
Comprehensive Cancer Center. This year’s ride
raised over two million dollars for the Sylvester
Cancer Center. Rides begin in Miami-Dade at Sun
Life Stadium, in Broward at Huizenga Plaza and in
Boca Raton throughout the weekend. Along each
route, water stops were located approximately every
15-20 miles, with food, beverages, entertainment,
restroom facilities, medical treatment, recovery
stations and mechanical assistance available for riders.
On November 2-3, 2013, 26 Athletic Training Program students and staff participated for the second
year in a row in the DCC. The students and staff helped with stretching and massaging cyclists at
various points along the route. The opportunity to be a part of the DCC allowed the athletic training
students to gain valuable experience working with cyclists. Although the students did not see many
injuries, it is estimated that they massaged and stretched over 200 participants. A highlight of the
event was seeing, Senior Athletic Training Student, Rachel Gregory cross the finish line at Sun Life
Stadium after completing a 100 mile ride.

Motivational speaker and bestselling author, Brian Tracy recently visited campus and spoke at an
Athletic Training meeting and with Dr. Mullane’s graduate leadership class. Mr. Tracy focused on
three topics: leadership, time management, and networking. He talked about the seven essential skills
and strategies necessary to become an effective leader in today’s highly competitive job market. He
provided the students, staff, and faculty with many practical tips and words of wisdom. Brian Tracy is
the father to Junior Athletic Training and Sport Administration student, Catherine Tracy. The KIN
department is lucky to have Mr. Tracy as an advocate and we hope to have him visit again. For more

The Graduate Program in Strength and Conditioning has received double recognition through the National
Strength and Conditioning Associations (NSCA) review process for academic programs. The NSCA
recognizes select programs based on criteria that emphasizes curricular alignment with the role delineation
study of strength and condition professionals, specific content knowledge, and defined outcome based
academic rigors. This is the first time a program has received the double distinction in graduate studies,
one for strength and conditioning research and one for strength and conditioning applied science. Prior to
the expanded recognition, the program was previously one of seven recognized as an applied science
program in the United States. The University's distinction will be publicized in the organizations
periodicals and on the NSCA website as an Education Recognized Program. !

2014 will mark the 9th year the Sport Administration Graduate Program will be executing
their annual charity golf classic. Master’s students in Dr. Dees’ Facilities and Event
Management course (KIN 563) plan, prepare, and produce a golf outing at The Biltmore Golf
Course each spring for over 100 players as well as tournament sponsors, contributing local
organizations, and guests. This year the Sport Administration program is proud to be
partnering with Coach Larrañaga and the Miami Men’s Basketball team to raise funds for
Coaches vs Cancer, a subsidiary of the American Cancer Society. The Inaugural Coach L
Charity Golf Classic will be held on Friday, April 18th at 8:30am at The Biltmore with an
awards luncheon to follow the tournament at 1:30pm. Coach Larrañaga will be speaking at the
luncheon and various local sports celebrities and prominent business people will be in
attendance to enjoy great fun for a great cause and support the fight against cancer. For more
information about the tournament, to golf, become a sponsor, or make a donation to the event
