No respectable realm can exist without a cast of colorful characters to call it home, and on the stage provided by The Sims Medieval, there is no such thing as a minor player. The Monarch who occupies the Throne and makes sweeping political decisions has just as much effect on the success of the kingdom as the Bard who entertains patrons at the Tavern that exists in the shadow of the castle. And so you shouldn’t take the creation of these Heroes lightly. By all means, though, have fun tinkering with the things that make these Heroes tick. After all, this is no insurance seminar simulator— you’re being handed the deed to a fantastical kingdom. Use the secrets and strategies in Simology to construct your Heroes. Give them exciting and unpredictable personalities. Choose their Professions well so that they may flourish. When a Hero has their own personal renaissance, the entire kingdom benefits. Before claiming the throne in your new kingdom, you need to know a handful of terms that will assist you with Hero creation and general management of your playable characters. Deeper explanations of these essentials and more follow in this chapter. Heroes: Heroes are the playable Sims within your kingdom. Every Hero has a Profession, such as Knight or Wizard, that defines their role in the kingdom. When you construct a building that hosts a Hero, such as the Barracks or Clinic, you can use Create a Sim to design a new Hero. Professions: Professions are the careers of your Sims. There are several Professions to undertake within a kingdom. The essential role is the Monarch. No kingdom can flourish without somebody seated on the throne. Use the other Professions to expand your kingdom and truly personalize it. Focus: Focus replaces mood. Every Hero uses Focus as a measurement of happiness. The individual elements that make up the overall Focus provide snapshots of current factors affecting mood, such as elation from completing a task or an injury from a hunting trip gone wrong. Keep Focus high to ensure your Heroes earn the maximum reward for completing quests. Responsibilities: Every Hero has a handful of tasks they should complete every day in the kingdom. Responsibilities are not Herculean, they can usually be completed within an hour or two (of game time). There is no financial reward at stake, but not fulfilling Responsibilities will ding your Hero’s Focus. Motives: Heroes have a pair of Motives that must be addressed to maintain good Focus. Energy is replenished by making sure your Hero gets an adequate amount of shut eye. Hunger is, well, the need to eat. Some Fatal Flaws make fulfilling these Needs a little trickier, so watch out. Socials: Socials are conversational interactions that take place between Heroes or subjects within the kingdom, such as non-playable characters. There are hundreds of socials at your disposal, although some are unlocked by specific traits or professions. Skills: Though skills do not work the same in The Sims Medieval as they do in The Sims 3, they do exist; they just exist in the background. Skills are activities like whittling, cards, or Kingball (the official sport of the realm) that your Heroes undertake. The more you perform an activity related to one of these skills, the better your Sim becomes and their chance of success increases. Some skills, such as Lute, are related to Professions. Simoles: Simoles are the currency of the realm. Required Reading Create a Sim Think you’re an expert at creating Sims? Well, now you have to construct Heroes. Your toolkit for doing so is Create a Sim, which has been slightly modified from the impressive canvas provided in The Sims 3. You still choose your Sims’ appearances, outfits, and personalities, but now you have to make big decisions about their traits and behaviors. Whether you are just starting The Sims Medieval or installing a new Hero because you added a new building to your kingdom, you report to the same dressing room. A pre-created Sim stands in front of a mirror, just wanting to be shaped and molded into something—no, someone—special. Note When you create a new building that hosts a Hero, you are always given the opportunity to either create a new Sim or choose from two pre-made Heroes. After previous kingdoms failed by being left to their own devices (and invaded by Dire Chinchillas), you have decided to take matters into your own hands and use the gift of divine intervention to nudge the heroes of the realm toward success. Of course, even the Watcher can make mistakes. But one of the real perks of being omnipotent is that you have the ability to quickly right wrongs and get both Heroes and the kingdom they live in back on track and headed for victory. Consider Prima’s official The Sims Medieval guide to be the how-to book every Watcher needs. We’ll push back the fog on the inner workings of a kingdom, revealing everything from how to rocket to the top levels of Professions like Monarch and Bard to the location of rare collectibles needed for your Sims to create useful items. The secrets of socialization are revealed, including how to make sure love flows freely in your kingdom. And every quest your Heroes can embark upon for the glory of both Watcher and kingdom is detailed. Here’s how we’ve broken down all the moving parts of maintaining a kingdom, chapter by chapter. And we’re including a useful appendix at the back of the book with all the important tables you might need to reference at a glance. Chapter 1: A Day in Ye Olde Life Let’s hit the ground running. This chapter covers two quests and introduces all the important things you need to know about assembling and maintaining a successful kingdom, such as Aspects, Focus, Professions, and Questing. Everything revealed in this primer is expanded upon in the following chapters. Chapter 3: Professions There are ten Professions for your Heroes, from brave Knights to brilliant Physicians. Excelling at your Professions is critical for winning the day, so we show you how to generate experience and level up like a pro. Signature objects that help your Hero evolve and make Simoles—the coin of the realm—are detailed, too, so you know how they can help not just with money, but also in creating new items and boosting Focus. Chapter 2: Medieval Simology What makes Sims tick? This chapter dives into Create a Sim and how trait selection can affect your kingdom. We also go in depth on how Focus works and offer tips on how to boost this always-important factor in your Hero’s success. Daily responsibilities and motives are explained, as is the social scene in your kingdom. You might be surprised to see how faith, famil
