entotheeIfitseemethtotheethatthouknowestmanythings,andunderstandestthemwell,knowalsothattherearemanymorethingswhichthouknowestnotBenothighminded,butratherconfessthineignoranceWhydesirestthoutoliftthyselfaboveanother,whentherearefoundmanymorelearnedandmoreskilledintheScripturethanthouIfthouwiltknowandlearnanythingwithprofit,lovetobethyselfunknownandtobecountedfornothingThatisthehighestandmostprofitablelesson,whenamantrulyknowethandjudgethlowlyofhimselfToaccountnothingofone'sself,andtothinkalwayskindlyandhighlyofothers,thisisgreatandperfectwisdomEvenshouldestthouseethyneighborsinopenlyandgrievously,yetthououghtestnottoreckonthyselfbetterthanhe,forthouknowestnotTHEIMITATIONOFCHRISThowlongthoushaltkeepthineintegrityAllofusareweakandfrailholdthounomanmorefrailthanthyselfTHEIMITATIONOFCHRISTCHAPTEROftheknowledgeoftruthHappyisthemanwhomTruthbyitselfdothteach,notbyfiguresandtransientwords,butasitisinitself()Ourownjudgementandfeelingsoftendeceiveus,andwediscernbutlittleofthetruthWhatdothitprofittoargueabouthiddenanddarkthings,concerningwhichweshallnotbeevenreprovedinthejudgement,becauseweknewthemnotOh,grievousfolly,toneglectthethingswhichareprofitableandnecessary,andtogiveourmindstothingswhicharecuriousandhurtful!Havingeyes,weseenotAndwhathavewetodowithtalkaboutgenusandspecies!HetowhomtheEternalWordspeakethisfreefrommultipliedquestioningsFromthisOneWordareallthings,andallthingsspeakofHimandthisistheBeginningwhichalsospeakethtous()NomanwithoutHimunderstandethorrightlyjudgethThemantowhomallthingsareone,whobringethallthingstoone,whoseethallthingsinone,heisabletoremainsteadfastofspirit,andatrestinGodOGod,whoarttheTruth,makemeonewithTheeineverlastingloveItweariethmeoftentimestoreadandlistentomanythingsinTheeisallthatIwishforanddesireLetallthedoctorsholdtheirpeaceletallcreationkeepsilencebeforeThee:speakThoualonetomeThemoreamanhathunityandsimplicityinhimself,themorethingsandthedeeperthingsheunderstandethandthatwithoutlabour,becausehereceiveththelightofunderstandingfromaboveThespiritwhichispure,sincere,andsteadfast,isnotdistractedthoughithathmanyworkstodo,becauseitdothallthingstothehonourofGod,andstrivethtobefreefromallthoughtsofselfseekingWhoissofullofhindranceandannoyancetotheeasthineownundisciplinedheartAmanwhoisgoodanddevoutarrangethbeforehandwithinhisownhearttheworkswhichhehathtodoabroadandsoisnotdrawnawaybythedesiresofhisevilwill,butsubjectetheverythingtothejudgementofrightreasonTHEIMITATIONOFCHRISTWhohathaharderbattletofightthanhewhostrivethforselfmasteryAndthisshouldbeourendeavour,eventomasterself,andthusdailytogrowstrongerthanself,andgoonuntoperfectionAllperfectionhathsomeimperfectionjoinedtoitinthislife,andallourpowerofsightisnotwithoutsomedarknessAlowlyknowledgeofthyselfisasurerwaytoGodthanthedeepsearchingofman'slearningNotthatlearningistobeblamed,northetakingaccountofanythingthatisgoodbutagoodconscienceandaholylifeisbetterthanallAndbecausemanyseekknowledgeratherthangoodliving,thereforetheygoastray,andbearlittleornofruitOiftheywouldgivethatdiligencetotherootingoutofviceandtheplantingofvirtuewhichtheygiveuntovainquestioningstherehadnotbeensomanyevildoingsandstumblingblocksamongthelaity,norsuchilllivingamonghousesofreligionOfasurety,attheDayofJudgementitwillbedemandedofus,notwhatwehaveread,butwhatwehavedonenothowwellwehavespoken,buthowholilywehavelivedTellme,wherenowareallthosemastersandteachers,whomthouknowestwell,whilsttheywereyetwithyou,andflourishedinlearningTheirstallsarenowfilledbyothers,whoperhapsneverhaveonethoughtconcerningthemWhilsttheylivedtheyseemedtobesomewhat,butnownoonespeaksofthemOhhowquicklypasseththegloryoftheworldaway!Wouldthattheirlifeandknowledgehadagreedtogether!ForthenwouldtheyhavereadandinquireduntogoodpurposeHowmanyperishthroughemptylearninginthisworld,whocarelittleforservingGodAndbecausetheylovetobegreatmorethantobehumble,thereforethey"havebecomevainintheirimaginations"Heonlyistrulygreat,whohathgreatcharityHeistrulygreatwhodeemethhimselfsmall,andcountethallheightofhonourasnothingHeisthetrulywiseman,whocountethallearthlythingsasdungthathemaywinChristAndheisthetrulylearnedman,whodoeththewillofGod,andforsakethhisownwill()PsalmxcivNumbersxii()Johnviii(Vulg)THEIMITATIONOFCHRISTCHAPTEROfprudenceinactionWemustnottrusteverywordofothersorfeelingwithinourselves,butcautiouslyandpatientlytrythematter,whetheritbeofGodUnhappilywearesoweakthatwefinditeasiertobelieveandspeakevilofothers,ratherthangoodButtheythatareperfect,donotgivereadyheedtoeverynewsbearer,fortheyknowman'sweaknessthatitispronetoevilandunstableinwordsThisisgreatwisdom,nottobehastyinaction,orstubborninourownopinionsApartofthiswisdomalsoisnottobelieveeverywordwehear,nortotellothersallthatwehear,eventhoughwebelieveitTakecounselwithamanwhoiswiseandofagoodconscienceandseektobeinstructedbyonebetterthanthyself,ratherthanfollowthineowninventionsAgoodlifemakethamanwisetowardGod,andgivethhimexperienceinmanythingsThemorehumbleamanisinhimself,andthemoreobedienttowardsGod,thewiserwillhebeinallthings,andthemoreshallhissoulbeatpeaceTHEIMITATIONOFCHRISTCHAPTEROfthereadingofHolyScripturesItisTruthwhichwemustlookforinHolyWrit,notcunningofwordsAllScriptureoughttobereadinthespiritinwhichitwaswrittenWemustratherseekforwhatisprofitableinScripture,thanforwhatministerethtosubtletyindiscourseThereforeweoughttoreadbookswhicharedevotionalandsimple,aswellasthosewhicharedeepanddifficultAndletnottheweightofthewriterbeastumblingblocktothee,whetherhebeoflittleormuchlearning,butlettheloveofthepureTruthdrawtheetoreadAsknot,whohathsaidthisorthatbutlooktowhathesaysMenpassaway,butthetruthoftheLordendurethforeverWithoutrespectofpersonsGodspeakethtousindiversmannersOurowncuriosityoftenhinderethusinthereadingsofholywritings,whenweseektounderstandanddiscuss,whereweshouldpasssimplyonIfthouwouldstprofitbythyreading,readhumbly,simply,honestly,andnotdesiringtowinacharacterforlearningAskfreely,andhearinsilencethewordsofholymennorbedispleasedatthehardsayingsofoldermenthanthou,fortheyarenotutteredwithoutcauseTHEIMITATIONOFCHRISTCHAPTEROfinordinateaffectionsWhensoeveramandesirethaughtabovemeasure,immediatelyhebecomethrestlessTheproudandtheavariciousmanareneveratrestwhilethepoorandlowlyofheartabideinthemultitudeofpeaceThemanwhoisnotyetwhollydeadtoself,issoontempted,andisovercomeinsmallandtriflingmattersItishardforhimwhoisweakinspirit,andstillinpartcarnalandinclinedtothepleasuresofsense,towithdrawhimselfaltogetherfromearthlydesiresAndtherefore,whenhewithdrawethhimselffromthese,heisoftensad,andeasilyangeredtooifanyopposehiswillButif,ontheotherhand,heyieldtohisinclination,immediatelyheisweigheddownbythecondemnationofhisconscienceforthathehathfollowedhisowndesire,andyetinnowayattainedthepeacewhichhehopedforFortruepeaceofheartistobefoundinresistingpassion,notinyieldingtoitAndthereforethereisnopeaceintheheartofamanwhoiscarnal,norinhimwhoisgivenuptothethingsthatarewithouthim,butonlyinhimwhoisferventtowardsGodandlivingthelifeoftheSpiritTHEIMITATIONOFCHRISTCHAPTEROffleeingfromvainhopeandprideVainisthelifeofthatmanwhoputtethhistrustinmenorinanycreatedThingBenotashamedtobetheservantofothersfortheloveofJesusChrist,andtobereckonedpoorinthislifeRestnotuponthyself,butbuildthyhopeinGodDowhatliethinthypower,andGodwillhelpthygoodintentTrustnotinthylearning,norintheclevernessofanythatlives,butrathertrustinthefavourofGod,whoresisteththeproudandgivethgracetothehumbleBoastnotthyselfinthyrichesifthouhastthem,norinthyfriendsiftheybepowerful,butinGod,whogivethallthings,andinadditiontoallthingsdesirethtogiveevenHimselfBenotliftedupbecauseofthystrengthorbeautyofbody,forwithonlyaslightsicknessitwillfailandwitherawayBenotvainofthyskilfulnessorability,lestthoudispleaseGod,fromwhomcometheverygoodgiftwhichwehaveCountnotthyselfbetterthanothers,lestperchancethouappearworseinthesightofGod,whoknowethwhatisinmanBenotproudofthygoodworks,forGod'sjudgmentsareofanothersortthanthejudgmentsofman,andwhatpleasethmanisofttimesdispleasingtoHimIfthouhastanygood,believethatothershavemore,andsothoumayestpreservethyhumilityItisnoharmtotheeifthouplacethyselfbelowallothersbutitisgreatharmifthouplacethyselfaboveevenonePeaceiseverwiththehumbleman,butintheheartoftheproudthereisenvyandcontinualwrathTHEIMITATIONOFCHRISTCHAPTEROfthedangeroftoomuchfamiliarityOpennotthinehearttoeveryman,butdealwithonewhoiswiseandfearethGodBeseldomwiththeyoungandwithstrangersBenotaflattereroftherichnorwillinglyseekthesocietyofthegreatLetthycompanybethehumbleandsimple,thedevoutandthegentle,andletthydiscoursebeconcerningthingswhichedifyBenotfamiliarwithanywoman,butcommendallgoodwomenalikeuntoGodChooseforthycompanionsGodandHisAngelsonly,andfleefromthenoticeofmenWemustloveallmen,butnotmakeclosecompanionsofallItsometimesfallethoutthatonewhoisunknowntousishighlyregardedthroughgoodreportofhim,whoseactualpersonisneverthelessunpleasingtothosewhobeholditWesometimesthinktopleaseothersbyourintimacy,andforthwithdispleasethemthemorebythefaultinessofcharacterwhichtheyperceiveinusTHEIMITATIONOFCHRISTCHAPTEROfobedienceandsubjectionItisverilyagreatthingtoliveinobedience,tobeunderauthority,andnottobeatourowndisposalFarsaferisittoliveinsubjectionthaninaplaceofauthorityManyareinobediencefromnecessityratherthanfromlovethesetakeitamiss,andrepineforsmallcauseNorwilltheygainfreedomofspirit,unlesswithalltheirhearttheysubmitthemselvesfortheloveofGodThoughthourunhitherandthither,thouwiltnotfindpeace,saveinhumblesubjectiontotheauthorityofhimwhoissetovertheeFanciesaboutplacesandchangeofthemhavedeceivedmanyTrueitisthateverymanwillinglyfollowethhisownbent,andisthemoreinclinedtothosewhoagreewithhimButifChristisamongstus,thenitisnecessarythatwesometimesyieldupourownopinionforthesakeofpeaceWhoissowiseastohaveperfectknowledgeofallthingsThereforetrustnottoomuchtothineownopinion,butbereadyalsotoheartheopinionsofothersThoughthineownopinionbegood,yetiffortheloveofGodthouforegoestit,andfollowestthatofanother,thoushaltthemoreprofittherebyOfttimesIhaveheardthatitissafertohearkenandtoreceivecounselthantogiveitItmayalsocometopassthateachopinionmaybegoodbuttorefusetohearkentootherswhenreasonoroccasionrequirethi
