omanddignityforgenerations,deliveredfromitsbondage,andbroughtintoacovenantwithGodOnlybyparticipatinginthecollectiveliberationfromEgyptcantheindividualgraspthemeaningofaliferootedintherevelationatSinaiHistoryandcollectivememoryaredefinitivecategoriesinthebiblicaltraditionThecovenantisenacteddayafterdaythroughtheethical,ritual,andpoliticalformsofcommunityIsrael’slossofsovereigntyanditsexilefromthelanddidnotmeantheendofthiscommunityRabbinicJudaismdevelopedacomprehensivewayoflifemediatedbyexplicitandpreciselegalnormsthatsustainedthecollectivethrustofJudaicspiritualityPrayerswereformulatedinthepluralimportantsegmentsofreligiousworshipwereconditioneduponaquorumoftenthecelebrationoftheShabbatandthefestivalswassimultaneouslyfamilialandcommunalThekahalprovidedbothasiteandastructureforthecommonlifeInresponsetothisstrongcollectiveorientation,manymodernJewishreligiousthinkerssoughttorescueandreinstatetheindividualbyinfusingJudaicspiritualitywithanexistentialistpassionTheiraimwastoshiftthefocusoftheJew’sreligiousimaginationfromMosestheprophetaspoliticalandlegislativeleadertoAbrahamandthepatriarchs,thatis,toreligiousfigureswhocouldmediatetheintensityoftheindividual’sexperiencebeforeGodButwiththeestablishmentofthestateofIsraelthethirdJewishcommonwealthJewishthinkershavetoaddressagainthecentralissuesofcollectiveexistenceTheirchallengeistoformulateaspiritualvisionsuitedxiiiTseng:WalzerTHEJEWISHPOLITICALTRADITIONsheetofxivForewordtothenewsocialrealitiesofsovereigntyintheworldThecomplexityoftheethicalandpoliticalissuesthatsurfacewithintheemergingIsraelidemocracyrequirealanguagerootedinthehistoricalexperienceoftheJewishpeoplebutcapablealsoofshapingthecommonlifeofamodernstateBecauseofnationalrenewalandempowerment,Jewsarenolongerlivingmetaphorsforthe‘‘other,’’the‘‘stranger,’’theeternalvictimTheynowwieldpowerinasovereignstate,andsotheycannotconcealtheirmoralfailuresbyblamingothersTherebirthofIsraelprovidestheJewishpeoplewithapublicarenawheretheythemselvesmusttakecharge,drawingonthestrengthoftheirtraditiontogiveadirectiontopoliticallifeandacontenttopopularaspirationNowJewishvaluesmustcometogripswithJewishpowerJudaismisn’tconfinedtotheprivacyofthesynagogue,thefamily,ortheacademyoflearningItisnowbeingtestedinthepublicsquareandthepoliticalassembly,wherethehardquestionsthatfaceselfgoverningnationscannotbeignoredThereisnoescapingtotheprivacyoftheinnersoulortosomespiritualsanctuaryseparatedfromthemundaneissuesofeverydaylife:poverty,socialwelfare,unemployment,relationswithstrangers,tolerance,pluralism,security,andjusticeGiventhecompromisesthatafullpoliticalliferequires,howcanJewsretainacompellingmoralvisionIfpubliclifeinIsraelcannotderivemoralstrengthandcriticalinsightfromthetraditioniftheprivateandpublicdomains,theworldsoftheindividualandthecitizen,aretotallyisolatedfromoneanother,thentheJewishpeoplewilllosetheirsenseofhistoryandidentityIfthelanguageofpoliticsisvoidofpersonalmeaning,andthelanguageofprivatelifevoidofpoliticalidealism,wewillforfeitahistoricopportunitytobuildasocietythatovercomesthemoderntendencytoseparateselfrealizationandcommunalcommitmentThesevolumesontheJewishpoliticaltraditionfillapressingneed:theyaimtoretrieveaJewishpoliticaldiscourseconcernedwithissueslikeauthority,distributivejustice,membership,andwelfareTheyhelpcorrectthemistakennotionthattheJewishtraditionwasconcernedonlywithritualcelebration,lawsofpurity,dailyworship,thestudyofTorahTheymakethepoliticalargumentsthathavegoneonformorethanthreemillenniaaccesTseng:WalzerTHEJEWISHPOLITICALTRADITIONsheetofForewordxvsible,sothatreaderscangainanewappreciationofthetraditionalmeaningofcovenantalengagementwhichencompassednotonlythelifeofworshipbutalsothebuildingofajustandcompassionatecommunityDavidHartmanTseng:WalzerTHEJEWISHPOLITICALTRADITIONsheetofPrefaceandAcknowledgmentsTheJewishPoliticalTraditionhasitsorigininaconferenceonJewishphilosophy,religion,andpolitics,sponsoredbytheShalomHartmanInstituteinJerusalem,thathasbeenconvenedeveryyearsinceItsparticipantsarepoliticaltheorists,philosophers,lawprofessors,andhistoriansbroughttogetherwithscholarsoftheTalmudandofJewishliteraturegenerallyThediscussionshaverangedwidely,buthavecomebackagainandagaintopoliticalquestionsofthesortthatwehavetriedtoengageinthesevolumesTheideaofa‘‘readerwithcommentaries’’aroseoutoftheconferencediscussions,wherewereadtextstogetherandargueaboutwhatthetextsmeanandwhatvaluetheirargumentshaveFromthebeginning,theprojecthashadstrongsupportintellectual,financial,andlogisticalfromthefacultyandstaffoftheHartmanInstituteWeareespeciallygratefulforDavidHartman’sguidanceandencouragementThefirst,roughproposalforabookonJewishpoliticalthoughtwascirculatedbyMichaelWalzerinMenachemLorberbaumjoinedinlaunchingtheprojectinandplayedthemajorroleinfleshingouttheproposalandproducingthefirstlonglistofreadingsheisresponsibleforthetranslationsofourmedievalandmoderntextsNoamZoharhasworkedontheprojectsince,helpingtorevise,supplement,andreorganizethelistandundertakingthetranslationofallourtalmudicandmidrashictextsYairLorberbaumhasbe
