ApproachingtheGuruDzongsarKhyentseApproachingtheGuruTotellyouthetruth,IthinkIamthewrongpersontotalkaboutgurudevotion,becauseIdon’thaveitThisisnotbecausethereisanydeficiencyinmyteachersitisentirelybecauseofsomethinglackinginmeBelieveme,Ihavesomuchego,anddevotionisbadnewsfortheegoOntheotherhand,Ihavestudieddevotion,soImayhavesometheoreticalknowledgeaboutit说实话我想我不是一个适合谈有关对上师虔诚心的人因为我没有虔诚心。这不是因为我的老师们有任何缺陷完全因为我缺乏了一些东西。相信我我的自我这么强而虔诚心对自我而言是个坏消息但另一方面我研究过虔诚心所以可能对它有一些理论上的知识。Whydevotion为何需要虔诚心为何需要虔诚心为何需要虔诚心为何需要虔诚心????WhydoweneeddevotionGenerallyspeaking,weneeddevotionbecauseweneedenlightenmentInoneway,enlightenmentcanbeunderstoodverysimplyasareleasefromcertainobsessionsandhangupsUntilwearefreefromtheseobsessionsandhabits,wewillwanderendlesslyinsamsara,goingthroughallsortsofanxiety,suffering,andsoon为何需要虔诚心呢?因为我们要成佛。某方面来说成佛可以很简单的理解为从某些纠缠和执著中解脱出来。一直到我们脱离了这些纠缠和习气之前我们将无止尽的徘徊在轮回中经历各种的焦虑和痛苦等等。ThecauseofallthesesufferingsisourfundamentalinsecurityWearealwayswonderingwhetherweexistornotOurego,orratherourattachmenttotheideaofself,iscompletelyinsecureaboutitsownexistenceOuregomayseemstrongbutitisactuallyquiteshakyOfcourse,wedonotasksuchquestionsconsciously,butwealwayshaveasubconsciousfeelingofinsecurityaboutwhetherweexist这些痛苦的原因是我们基本的不安全感我们总是怀疑自己存在与否。自我或对自我的执著对於它本身的存在完全没有安全感。自我可能显得很坚强但实际上却很不稳固。当然我们不会有意识地问这种问题但潜意识里我们总是对自己的存在感到不安全。Wetrytousethingssuchasfriends,money,positionandpower,andalltheeverydaythingsthatwedo,likewatchingtelevisionorgoingshopping,tosomehowproveandconfirmourexistenceTrysittingaloneinahouseanddoingabsolutelynothingSoonerorlateryourhandswillreachfortheremotecontrolorthenewspaperWeneedtobeoccupiedWeneedtobebusyIfwearenotbusy,wefeelinsecure我们试著用一些事物像是朋友、金钱、地位及权利以及我们每天所做的事件例如看电视或购物来证明及确定自己的存在。试著自己一人坐在屋里什么事都绝对不做早晚你的手就会开始找遥控器或报纸。我们需要被占据我们需要忙碌如果不忙碌就觉得不安全。ButthereissomethingverystrangeinallthisTheegosearchesconstantlyfordistraction,andthenthedistractionitselfbecomesaproblemInsteadofhelpingustofeelreassured,itactuallyincreasesourinsecurityWegetobsessedwiththedistractionanditdevelopsintoanotherhabitOnceitbecomesahabit,itisdifficulttogetridofSoinordertogetridofthisnewhabit,wehavetoadoptyetanotherhabitThisishowthingsgoonandon奇怪的是自我不断的寻找打扰然而打扰本身又成了一个问题它不但没有帮我们安心反而增加不安全感。我们执著这些打扰且发展成另一种习性一旦它成为一种习性就很难去除为了去除这个新习性我们就必须发展出另一个习性。这就是事情演变的方式。Inordertounderminethiskindofhabitualpattern,LordBuddhataughtusmany,manydifferentmethodsSomeoftheseareveryskillfulmethods,suchasovercomingtheemotionsbymakingfriendswiththemEvenasinglewordoftheSakyamuniBuddhacanliberateusfromalltheseobsessionsandhabitualpatternsTake,forinstance,theteachingonimpermanenceWhenmanyofus,includingmyself,hearteachingsonthingslikeimpermanence,theprecioushumanbody,andloveandcompassion,wetendtodismissthemasverysimpleandpreliminaryButthisisbecausewedonotactuallyunderstandthem为了破坏这种习性佛陀教导我们许多不同的方法其中有些是非常技巧的方便法门像是利用和情绪作朋友来克服它。释迦摩尼佛说的一个字就可以使我们从这些束缚和习性中解脱出来。例如无常的教授我们很多人包括我自己在内听到有关无常、人身难得以及慈悲就企图忽视这些被认为非常简单而且初步的教授但这是因为我们没有真正的了解它。TrainingtheMind修心修心修心修心ThequintessenceofthepathistohavethewisdomthatrealizesegolessnessUntilwehavethiswisdom,wehavenotunderstoodtheessenceoftheBuddha’steaching修道的精髓是证得无我的智慧。证悟这样的智慧之前我们都不了解佛陀教授的精义。Inordertoachievethiswisdom,firstwehavetomakeourmindmalleable,workableinthesenseofbeingincontrolofourownmindAsShantidevasaid,ifyouwanttowalkcomfortably,therearetwopossiblesolutionsEitheryoucantrytocoverthewholegroundwithleatherbutthatwouldbeverydifficultoryoucanachievethesameeffectbysimplywearingapairofshoesInthesameway,itwouldbedifficulttotrainandtameeverysingleemotionthatwehave,ortochangetheworldaccordingtoourdesiresInfactthebasisofallexperienceisthemind,andthat’swhyBuddhistsstresstheimportanceoftrainingthemindinordertomakeitworkableandflexible为了证得这种智慧首先要使自己的心有弹性、可以被塑造也就是可以控制自己的心。如寂天菩萨所说如果你想要很舒服的走路有两种可能的解决办法一者将整个大地覆盖上皮革但这非常困难或者只要穿上一双皮鞋即可达到相同的效果。同样的要训练及降服每一种烦恼或者依照自己的愿望来改变世界是困难的。事实上心是一切经验的基础这也就是为何佛教强调修心要使心能够被塑造并具有弹性。YetaflexiblemindisnotenoughWehavetounderstandthenatureofthemindThisisverydifficulttodo,preciselybecauseitinvolvesthewisdomofrealizingegolessnessWehavebeeninsamsarafrombeginninglesstimeOurhabitualpatternsareverystrongWearecompletelydeludedForthisreason,itisvery,verydifficultforthiswisdomtoappear只是心具有弹性仍然不够还必须了解心的本性这非常困难因为这要了解无我的智慧。无始以来我们即在轮回里我们的习性很强完全被迷惑住了因此这种智慧很难展现。SowhatistobedoneThereisonlyonewaytoobtainthiswisdombyaccumulatingmeritHowshouldweaccumulatethismeritAccordingtothegeneralvehicleofBuddhism,themethodofaccumulatingmeritisbyhavingrenunciationmind,bycontemplatingimpermanence,byrefrainingfromallthecausesandconditionsthatwillstrengthentheego,byengaginginallthecausesandconditionsthatwillstrengthenourwisdom,byrefrainingfromharmingotherbeings,andsoonInthemahayanaschool,themeritisaccumulatedbyhavingcompassionforsentientbeings那怎么办呢?只有一个方法可以得到这种智慧累积功德。如何累积功德呢?根据一般佛教的看法累积功德的方法是要具备出离心思量无常克制加强自我的因和缘致力增加智慧的因和缘避免伤害其他众生等等。大乘是藉由对众生的慈悲来累积功德。Tocutalongstoryshort,ifyouwantenlightenmentyouneedwisdomIfyouwantwisdom,youmusthavemeritAndtohavemerit,accordingtomahayana,youmusthavecompassionandbodhichitta,thewishtoestablishbeingsinthestateoffreedom简短而言成佛需要智慧智慧需要有功德。如何有功德呢?根据大乘必须有慈悲心及菩提心希望一切众生得到解脱和自由。BlessingsoftheGuru上师的加持上师的加持上师的加持上师的加持Thevajrayanaisrenownedforitsmanymethodsandtechniques,someofwhicharequiteeasyThemostimportantone,however,istohavea“sacredoutlook”AndgurudevotionistheessenceofthissacredoutlookItsaysinthecommentarytotheChakrasamvaraTantrathat,“Throughtheblessingsandkindnessoftheguru,greatbliss,therealizationofemptiness,theunionofsamsaraandnirvana,canbeobtainedinstantly”Thisquotationtalksaboutbuddhanature金刚乘以具有许多善巧和方便闻名其中有些很简单最重要的一项是「净观」对上师的虔诚心是净观的精髓。胜乐金刚续的注释中说:「透过上师的加持和慈悲可以在一刹那得到大乐、证悟空性以及轮涅合一。」这段话就是谈佛性。Generallyspeaking,theultimatemessageofBuddhismisthatyoupossessbuddhanatureInotherwords,youalreadyandquitenaturallyhavewithinyouthequalitiesofcompleteenlightenmentButyouneedtorealizethisThefactthatyoudon’thavethisrealizationisthereasonwhyyouarewanderinginsamsaraAccordingtoNagarjuna,theBuddhadidn’tsaythatyouneedtoabandonsamsarainordertogainenlightenmentWhathesaidwasthatyouneedtoseethatsamsaraisempty,thatithasnoinherentexistenceThisisthesameassayingthatyouneedtorecognizeyouressentialbuddhanature佛教最究竟的教授说你具有佛性换句话说你已经具备完整佛陀的品质但你需要认知这件事因为无法认知所以你才在轮回中飘荡。根据龙树的讲法佛没有说需要舍弃轮回才能成佛佛是说你需要见到轮回即是空性轮回没有真实存在的本质这和说你需要认知到自己基本的佛性是一样的。TherearemanydifferentmethodsforrecognizingthisBuddhawithinOfthese,thequickestandeasiestistoreceivetheblessingsoftheguruThisiswhygurudevotionisnecessary有许多不同的方法来认知内在的佛其中最快、最容易的是接受上师的加持这是为什么需要对上师有虔诚心。Forexample,youmaybehavinganightmareaboutmonstersButthensuddenly,somebodythrowsabucketofcoldwateroveryouandyouwakeupThecoldwaterdoesn’treallymakethemonstersdisappear,becausetherewerenomonstersinthefirstplaceItwasjustadreamButontheotherhand,whenyouarehavinganightmare,yoursufferingsarereal,andthepersonwhothrowsthebucketofwateroveryouisindeedverykindandspecialIfyouhavealotofmerityouareabletomeetsuchaperson,apersonwhocanthrowthewaterOntheotherhand,ifyoudon’thavemerit,youmayneverwakeupfromthenightmare例如你可能正在作恶梦梦中有个恶魔突然间有人对你泼了一桶冷水你醒来了冷水并不真的使恶魔消失因为从一开始就没有恶魔这只是一个梦。但另一方面作恶梦时你的痛苦是真实的这个对你泼冷水的人是真的非常仁慈和特别。如果你有很多功德你就可以遇到这样的人对你泼冷水反之如果你没有功德你可能永远无法从恶梦中醒来。ThegurulineageoriginateswithsomeonecalledVajradharaorSamantabhadraOurmasterstellusthatheisourownmind,thenatureofourownmindThismeansthatwhenwetracebackthroughthelineage,weactuallyendupwithourownminds,theessenceofourselvesTheguruisnotsomekindofalmightysponsorthatwehavetoworshiporobeyThemostimportantthingtounderstandisthattheguruisthedisplayofourbuddhanature上师的传承开始於金刚持或普贤王如来老师告诉我们金刚持或普贤王如来就是我们心的本性。也就是说当我们往上追溯这个传承最後找到的是我们的心也就是自己的本性。上师并不是一个全能的教父需要崇拜及服从最重要的是要了解上师是自己佛性的显现。Ontheordinarylevel,onecansaythattheguruissomeonewhotellsyouwhattodoandwhatnottodoAsmallchildmaynotrealizethathotironburns,sohisfathertellshimthatitburnsandsaveshimfromgettinghurtTheguruisdoingthisforyouwhenhetellsyouwhatisrightandwhatiswrong在普通的情况我们可以说上师告诉你什么可以做什么不可以做。小孩可能不知道热铁会灼伤人所以他的父亲会告诉他并保护他不被灼伤。上师告诉你什么是对、什么是错的时候也是为了保护你。InVajrayana,though,thegurudoessomethingevenmoreimportantYoumusthavereadmany,manytimesthatyourbody,speech,mindandaggregateshaveallbeenpurefrombeginninglesstimeButwedon’trealizethatAsKyabjeDudjomRinpochesaid,itispreciselybecausethetruthissosimplethatpeopledon’tunderstanditIt’slikeoureyelashes,whicharesoclosethatwecan’tseethemThereasonwhywedon’trealizethisisourlackofmeritTheguru’sroleistograntusempowermentandintroduceustothispurityandfinallytopointoutdirectlythemind’snature在金刚乘上师所做的更重要。你一定已经听过很多次了你的身、语、意和五蕴从无始以来就是清净的但我们不能证得。如敦珠仁波切所说:「正因为真理这么简单所以人们无法了解像是我们的睫毛它这么靠近以致於无法看见它。」不能认知的原因是缺乏功德上师的角色是给予我们灌顶并介绍这种清净最後直接指出心的本性。PuttingtheGurutotheTest检视上师检视上师检视上师检视上师ThegreatvidyadharaJigmeLingpasaidthatitisveryimportanttoanalyzethegurufirstAsIsaidbefore,wearenaturallyveryinsecurepeopleBecauseofthisweareeasypreyWemakeallsortsofmistakesthataredifficulttoclearuplateron伟大的持明吉美林巴曾说:「刚开始时先分析上师是很重要的。」如我之前所言我们与生俱来就是非常没有安全感的人因此很容易成为猎物。我们制造了各式各样的错误以致於最後难以解决。Beforeyoustarttofollowaguru,youshouldhaveagoodunderstandingofthedharmaIdon’tmeanthatyouhavetounderstanditcompletely,butatleastyoushouldhavesomeunderstandingYoushouldanalyze,andyoushouldbeskepticalandcriticalPerhapsyoushouldargue,andtrytofindfaultbyusinglogicandreflection开始跟随一位上师之前应该对佛法先有很好的了解。我并不是说你要完全了解但至少要有一些认识。你应该分析、怀疑、批判、争辩并试著利用逻辑和思考的方法找寻错误。Butwhileyouaredoingthis,youshouldnothavethejournalist’sapproachoflookingforfaultsTheaimhereistofindthepath,nottofindfaultsSo,whenyoustudyBuddhism,youshouldtrytoseewhetherthispathsuitsyouornot,whetherthispathmakessenseornotThisisveryimportant但当你在做这些的时候不应该像新闻记者寻找错误一样这里的目的是找寻道路不是找寻错误。所以在研读佛教时应该想想这条道路是否适合你?是否有意义?这非常重要。Here’sanexampleLet’ssaythatwewanttogotoNewYork,andwearehiringaguideWeneedtohaveatleastsomeideawhereNewYorkisTotakeaguidewithoutknowingwhetherNewYorkisintheeast,southorwestiswhatIcallthe“inspirationaldisease”It’snotenoughjusttofindtheguideattractivetolikethewayhelooks,talksandbehavesYoushouldhaveatleastsomeknowledgewhereNewYorkis,sothatifinthemiddleofthetriphebeginstoactalittlefunny,youfeelokaybecauseyouknowthatyouareheadingintherightdirectionHemayleadyouthroughstrangeorroughroads,butthatdoesn’tmatterifyouknowyouareheadingintherightdirection举个例子假设我们要去纽约雇了一个导游我们至少对纽约在哪里应该有点概念。去找个导游但自己却完全不知道纽约在东方、南方或西方这是我所谓的「灵感的疾病」。只是找一个外貌、谈吐以及行为具有吸引力的导游是不够的。你应该对纽约在哪里至少有一些知识如果在旅行的途中导游有些怪异的举动你会觉得还好因为你知道自己是往正确的方向前进他可能引导你走陌生或崎岖的道路但只要你知道自己往正确的方向前进就没有问题。Ontheotherhand,ifyoudon’tknowthewayatall,youareobligedtoplaceallyourtrustinthisoneguidewhoclaimsthathecandoanythingMaybeifyouhavelotsofmerit,youmightaccidentallyfindanauthenticguideandactuallyreachNewYorkButifIwereyouIwouldnottrustthiskindofaccidentalsuccessallthewayItisgoodtoanalyzethepathfirst,andthenyoucanhaveoneorahundredorthousandsofgurusifyoulike另一方面如果你完全不知道路径你就不得不完全信任一个声称他了解一切的导游。如果你有很多功德你可能意外的找到一个可以信任的导游真的到达纽约但如果我是你我不会完全信任这种意外的成功。先分析这条道路然後如果喜欢的话你可以有一个、百个或千个上师。ApproachingtheGuru接近上师接近上师接近上师接近上师WhatshouldwedonextOneofthegreatSakyapamasters,JamyangGyaltsen,said,“Firstyouhavetothinkabout,contemplate,andmanufacturedevotion”Youneedfabricateddevotion,whichistoconsiderthattheguruistheBuddhaMakebelieve,sotospeakAfterawhile,atthesecondstage,youwillreallystarttoseehimastheBuddha,withoutanydifficultyAndfinally,atthethirdstage,youwillrealizethatyouaretheBuddhaThisistheuniqueapproachofthevajrayana接下来要怎么做呢?一位伟大的萨迦派大师蒋扬嘉程说:「首先必须思考、深思熟虑制造出虔诚心。」需要造作出虔诚心也就是视上师为佛使自己相信这件事。过一阵子到了第二阶段你会没有困难的看上师是佛。最後在第三阶段你会证悟到自己就是佛。这是金刚乘特别的方法。AsIsaidatthebeginning,Ipersonallydon’thaverealdevotionIdon’tseemyguruastheBuddha,butItrytocontemplateandthinkthatheistheBuddhaThisiswhatwecallcreatedorfabricateddevotionInthebeginningweconsiderthatallthefaultsweseeinhimarenothingbutourownprojectionsButthetruthofthematteristhattheguruhasallthequalitiesoftheBuddhaHeistheBuddha,heisthedharma,heisthesanghaheiseverything如我刚开始所说我没有真正的虔诚心没有视上师为佛但我试著这样去思考、去想他是佛这就是造作或捏造的虔诚心。开始时认为所有我们看到上师的错误都只是自己的投射真实的情况是上师具有所有佛的品质上师是佛、法、僧他是一切。WethinklikethisagainandagainThismaystrikeyouasnonsense,butactuallyit’sverylogicalafterall,everythingdependsonthemindItisbecauseofourdelusionsthatitisinitiallyveryhardforustoseetheguruastheBuddhaWehavetopracticeandgetusedtoitagainandagain,andthenitwilldefinitelywork这样一遍又一遍的思维也许你会觉得无意义但实际上这非常逻辑的毕竟一切唯心。因为自己的染污所以一开始很难视上师是佛我们必须一再的练习来习惯它然後一定可以如此运作。Shantidevahassaidthatifyougetaccustomedtosomething,thereisnothinginthisworldthatisdifficultLet’ssaythisisthefirsttimeinyourlifethatyouaregoingtoabarYouareintroducedtosomeoneand,duetosomepastkarmicconnectionthispersonproceedstogiveyoualltheinitiationsandoralinstructionsandteachingsonhowtomixvariousdrinks,Tequilawithlemon,martinisdryandsweetallsortsofdetailsaboutdrinking寂天菩萨曾说:「如果习惯了某事这世界就没有什么困难的。」假设你生命中第一次走进酒吧介绍认识了某人因为以往业力的牵引此人持续的给你有关混合不同的饮料的灌顶、口诀和教授龙舌兰酒加柠檬不甜和甜的马丁尼饮料的各种细节。Beingaverydevotedanddiligentstudent,youpracticedrinkingInthebeginning,itburnsyourthroat,ithurtsyourstomach,andyougetdrunkYouvomitandyougetupthenextmorningwithaheadacheWithlotsofenthusiasmyoukeepdoingthisThisiswhatwecallfoundationpracticeYoukeepgoingtothisperson,andeventhoughheoccasionallygivesyouahardtime,itdoesn’tmatterYouareaverydiligentstudentThenonedayyourmindandhismingle:youknoweverythingaboutalcohol,youknowhowtodrinkAtthispoint,youareaperfectlineageholderofalcoholdrinkingYoucanthenbegintoteachothers你是个非常虔诚和精进的学生你练习喝酒。刚开始酒会烧伤喉咙、伤害胃、也会醉令你呕吐隔天早上醒来时还头疼。但你以很大的热诚持续这样做这就是所谓的加行。你不断的去找这个人即使有时候他让你觉得难受也不在乎你是个非常精进的学生。直到有一天你的心和他的心合而为一:你知道所有有关酒的事你知道如何饮酒。在这件事上你是一个完美的饮酒传承持有人你可以开始教导别人了。TheUniversalityoftheGuru上师的全面性上师的全面性上师的全面性上师的全面性Wethinkthattheguruisonlygoodforgivingteachings,thattheguruisonlygoodforspecialthingsbutnotgoodforheadachesorotherproblemsThisisnotthewaytothinkForeveryproblemthatyouhave,praytotheguru,receivehisblessingsandyouwillbefreefromitInoneTantra,itsays,“Yearsandyearsofdoingmeditationonthedevelopmentorcompletionstages,oryearsandyearsofchantingmantras,cannotcomparewithoneinstantofrememberingtheguru”我们认为上师只能给予教授只对某些特定的事情是好的但对头疼或其它问题则未必如此这种想法不对。任何问题都可向上师祈祷接受他的加持使自己由其中获得自由。在一部密续中谈到:「多年修持生起次第以及圆满次第或者多年持咒皆比不上刹那忆念上师。」HowshouldyoubehavewithaguruAsanofferingyoucanthinkofthingslikedresscode,etiquette,politeness,butitdoesn’treallymatterHowever,therearetwoveryimportantthingsthatyoushouldneverforgetThefirstisthatyoushouldneverhaveprideThisisbecauseyouaretheretolearn,toreceiveteachings,tofindenlightenmentAsTibetanssay,“Aproudpersonislikeastone”Nomatterhowmuchwateryouputonit,itwillnevergetsoakedIfyouhaveprideyouwillneverlearnSoit’sveryimportanttoadoptanattitudeofhumility跟随上师你的行为应该如何呢?你可以将规范穿著、有规矩、有礼貌等等当成供养但这并不真的重要。有两件事非常重要应该永远不忘记第一是不应该骄傲因为你是来学习来接受教授来寻找菩提的。西藏谚语说:「骄傲的人就像石头一样。」不论你对它倒多少水它永远不会湿透。骄傲就无法学习所以调整到谦虚的态度是非常重要的。ThesecondimportantthingisnevertowasteanopportunitytoaccumulatemeritHavingmeritissoimportantWhenyouwatchamovie,ifyoudon’tknowthatit’samovieandthinkit’sreal,youwillgothroughallsortsofemotionaltraumaButifthepersonnexttoyousays,“Thisisjustamovie,”fromthenonyouwillbefreefromthiskindofdelusionOntheotherhand,ifyoudon’thavemerit,thenjustatthemomentwhenthepersonnexttoyousays,“Look,thisisjustamovie,”someonebehindyoumightcoughveryloudly,andyoumaynothearwhatthepersonnexttoyousaysSoyoumisstheopportunityofrealizationallbecauseyoudon’thavemerit第二是永远不要错失累积功德的机会具有功德非常重要。看电影时如果你不知道那是一场电影而以为是真实的那你就会感受到各种情绪的伤痛但如果旁边有一个人告诉你:「这只是一场电影。」从那时起你将从这种迷惑中获得自由。另一方面如果你没有功德当身旁的人告诉你说:「嘿这只是一场电影。」的时候正好背後有人很大
