,thetextwhichweresubsequentlydeployedinthecontemporarydebatesonmodernityandpostmodernismTheessayscontainedinthisvolumerepresentanattempttoexaminetheseimportantchangestakingplaceinpsychoanalysisandsocialtheoreticaldiscourseoverrecentyearsManyoftheessaysinPsychoanalysisinContextsassesstherelevanceandimportanceofpsychoanalysisasconcernstheproliferationofapproachesinsocialtheoreticalthinking,aswellasexploringtherelationshipofpsychoanalysistotheoryperseNewdirectionsinpsychoanalyticthinkingthathavepreviouslybeenlittleknownorneglectedareintroduced,includingtheworkofsuchauthorsasCastoriadisandLaplancheOldertraditionsofpsychoanalysis,suchasFreudianandobjectrelationalapproaches,areexaminedfromnewandordifferenttheoreticalperspectivesMoreover,theoreticalapproacheswhichhaveundergonearevivalofinterestandorreconceptualizationarealsoreviewed,suchIntroductionasthepostLacanianwritingsofKristeva,IrigarayandŽižekandthecontemporaryAngloAmericanwritingsofBenjamin,Kovel,SegalandothersInpreparingthisbookwehaveendeavouredtocreateadialoguebetweencompetingpsychoanalyticapproachestothestudyofsubjectivity,socialactionandmodernsocietiesWebelievethatthevolumeopensnewpathsbetweenpsychoanalytictheoryandcontemporarycultureIntheremainderofthisintroduction,weshallexploresomeofthekeythemeswhichhaverecentlyemergedinpsychoanalysisandsocialtheoreticalthinkingThissketchisintendedasaconceptualbackclothforthecriticaldebateswhichfollowFollowingonfromthis,weshallsummarizethemainargumentsoftheessaysinthisvolumePSYCHOANALYSIS,REFLEXIVITYANDTHEOTHERPsychoanalysishasalwaysrevolvedaroundanambivalentencounterwithothernessForFreud,facedwiththeinexhaustiblepassionofhisfemalehystericalpatients,therewasanattempttocolonize,totakeoverwhatwasotherandmakeitamenabletothedemandsofrationalityThisprocedurewasnotonlyaninstanceoftheoccludingofnaturebyscience,acommonnineteenthcenturystrategyfordealingwiththeterrorsinducedbytheunknownitalsospannedthepolarityoffemininityversusmasculinity,translatingtheformerintothelatterbymakingwomen’shystericaldiscoursethepossessionofthemaleexpertButalongsidethisimperialism,familiartothisdayinthepracticeofreductionistpsychoanalysis,therewasalsoarecognitionofsomethingoutsidethecontroloftheanalyst,anacknowledgementthatthesestrangewomenwerepresentinganothernesswhichcouldalsobefoundwithinthemanofscienceindeed,rightinsideFreudhimself,intheheartofhisselfanalysedunconsciousPutintheliterarytermsthatofferthemostcompellingcontemporarymetaphorfortheanalyticprocess,thisrecognitionoftheotherwithintheselfbecomesaninstanceofintertextuality:‘ThediscoveryoftheunconsciouswasFreud’sdiscovery,withinthediscourseoftheother,ofwhathewasactivelyreadingwithinhimself(Felman:)Thereisaninfiniteregresshereofgreatimportance:psychoanalysisanalysesthatisitsfunctionButitcanneverfullyencompassitsobjectinitsanalysis,becauseoneoftheprinciplesofpsychoanalysisistheunendingnatureoftheunconsciousdynamicTheanalyticattitude,asRieff()andothershavefamouslyportrayedit,ischaracterizedbyarelentlesslydeconstructiveurgethatallowsnoendpointsorperfectsolutionsnocures,justlivingwithailmentsOnandongoesanalysis,strivingtodomesticateanotherness,awildness,whichitknowstobeuntameablePsychoanalysisis,inthissense,abothandphenomenon:itattemptstomakesenseofothernessandrecognizestheessentiallyirrationalwaythesensemakingprocessoperatesItisbothhermeneuticandepiphanous,bothmechanisticandecstaticItarguesthatallmentalphenomenacanbeexplainedbyreferencetounconsciousimpulses,butalsosaysthattheexplanationsthemselvesareinpartconstitutedbythesesameimpulsesthattheyaremotivatedandhenceavailabletoanalysisthemselvesAgainitisFreudwhooffersaclearinstanceofthisselfreflexiveconundrumfromwhichpsychoanalysiscanneverescapeInIntroductionTheInterpretationofDreams,Freud()presentshisfamous‘SpecimenDream’ofIrma’sinjection,concludingfromitthatdreamsareconstitutedaswishfulfilmentsthediscoverywhichhebelieveswillmakehisnameHowever,asAnzieu(:)comments,‘FreudnotedsubsequentlythatthoughtswhichfollowonfromdreamsarestilldreamthoughtsSothethoughtthatdreamsarewishfulfilmentsisanintegralpartofthedreamcontent’Analysisofthedreamproducesthegeneralizationthatdreamsarewishfulfilments,butthistooisawishfulfilment,thewishbeingthatFreudshouldunravelthemysteryofdreamsMoregenerally,psychoanalysisisitselfconstitutedwithinthestructureofirrationalityoftheunconsciousandallitsoperationsbearthatmarkTheselfreferentialnatureofthepsychoanalyticenterpriseisparticularlywellattunedtoapostmodernculturalcontextinwhichmeaningiscontinuallydislocatedanddispersedThequintessentialawarenesshereisofthesubjectivestrainofimmersioninaculturalsettinginwhichimagesandsurfacesdominateinwhich‘seduction’istheprimaryforceandinwhichthecapacityofindividualstoholdontomeaningisconstantlyunderminedButasŽižek()pointsout,fromtheslipperyvantagepointofadeconstructingYugoslavia,whatisstartingtobecometerrifyingaboutpostmodernityisnotsomuchthegapsandabsencesinpeople’slives,butthewayeverythingiswrappeduptogetherintoaspacethatdeniesdistanceInthemodernisttraditionofwhichFreudianpsychoanalysisisapart,theimportanceofstrugglingtocreatedistanceisaccentuatedthatcriticaldistancethatenablesjudgementandunderstandingtobeachievedSowhenFreudpresentsdreams,mostlyhisown,asthefoundingactofpsychoanalysis,itistoshowhowtheyareinterpretable,intelligible,asthediscourseoftheunconsciousTheyareirrationalintheircontent,butnotintheirformSimilarlywithhysterialisteningtothewordofthewoman,Freudcolonizesittocreateakindofscience,tomakesenseofwhatisinothercontextsthoughtunreachableThe‘cure’,suchasitis,consistsinthis:todrawaboundarysothatwhatisirrationalisneverthelessknown,soappearinginthearenaofthatwhichissymbolizable,andcanbecontainedTheprojectofmosttherapyisofthiskind:throughsymbolization,makingmeaningsoutofwhatappearsnottobemeantPostmodernism,however,recognizessomethingdifferentTheRealisthemomentoffailureofsymbolization,whatisleftbehindwhenallinterpretationisoverUnderpostmodernconditions,itiswiththisthatwecomefacetofaceWhatmightseemtobeanemptyspaceisfulltooverflowingwithcontradictoryimpulses,producingboththedreadofwhatKristeva()terms‘abjection’,andthelifeandenergyofthesemioticThelawanditscorruptionarebounduptogether,theylivesidebyside,entangledonewithanotherTherelativityofthisversionofpostmodernismderivesnot,asmanycritiquesofpostmodernismsuggest,fromitsfailuretotakeupanethicalposition(seeBauman),butfromitsrecognitionthattheappallingelem
