Summary on the Trail That Rocked the World The trail was resulted from a clash that had been building up for a number of years between the fundamentalists and the modernists. The fundamentalists insisted on a literal interpretation of the Old Testament. The modernists, however, believed in the theory put forward by Charles Darwin, that is, all animals including monkeys and men had eveolved from common ancestor. The fundamentalism was strong in Tennessee, and the state legislature had recently passed a law prohibiting the teaching of “any theory that denies the story of creation as taught in the Bible.” However, John Scopes was a science master in Dayton, and he believed in Darwin’s theory of evolution, therefore, during one argument between Rappelyea, an engineer and the local people John Scopes was called to testify which side is right. Owing to this, John Scopes was indicted on May 7, 1925. The counsel for John Scope’ defense included Clarence Darrow, Dudley Field Malone and Arthur Garfield Hays. On the other hand, the counsel for the prosecution included William Jennings Bryan, his son, and Tom Stewart. The trail was adjourned for two times, both were ended by the success of Darrow’s side. In the first session, Darrow made his opening statement. He criticized the present situation that ignorance and bigotry were rampant which would lead the society backwards to the 16th century when bigots would punish those who bring any intelligence and enlightenment and culture to the human beings. Then the following day, Bryan called witnesses who were pupils of John Scopes against him. Besides, Bryan began his address on behalf of the Bible and the God. After his statement, springing to his feet, Malone replied sarcastically that Bryan has dedicated most of his life to politics rather than to God or religion. In addition, Malone said affirmatively that there is never a duel between science and religion, for the truth would never need a duel. This was the end of the first session. In the second session, which was also the climax of the trail, Darrow sparing his wining card by calling Bryan as a witness for the defense. Darrow questioned Bryan about stories on the Bible. Obviously, there were some stories contradictory to the fact although Bryan accused Darrow of casting slurs on the God. Although Darrow won in the two times’ session, the jury finally announced John Scopes was guilty. However, Malone called John’s conviction a “victorious defeat”, for it did bring some benefits to John Scopes and the society. For John Scopes, he had an opportunity to study the science in the University of Chicago. For the society, the trail brought a new climate of intellectual and academic freedom which would push the whole society forwards to a brighter future.
