PresidentFaust,membersoftheHarvardCorporationandtheBoardofOverseers,membersofthefaculty,proudparents,and,aboveall,graduatesThefirstthingIwouldliketosayis‘thankyou’NotonlyhasHarvardgivenmeanextraordinaryhonour,buttheweeksoffearandnauseaIhaveenduredatthethoughtofgivingthiscommencementaddresshavemademeloseweightAwinwinsituation!NowallIhavetodoistakedeepbreaths,squintattheredbannersandconvincemyselfthatIamattheworld’slargestGryffindorreunionDeliveringacommencementaddressisagreatresponsibilityorsoIthoughtuntilIcastmymindbacktomyowngraduationThecommencementspeakerthatdaywasthedistinguishedBritishphilosopherBaronessMaryWarnockReflectingonherspeechhashelpedmeenormouslyinwritingthisone,becauseitturnsoutthatIcan’trememberasinglewordshesaidThisliberatingdiscoveryenablesmetoproceedwithoutanyfearthatImightinadvertentlyinfluenceyoutoabandonpromisingcareersinbusiness,thelaworpoliticsforthegiddydelightsofbecomingagaywizardYouseeIfallyourememberinyearstocomeisthe‘gaywizard’joke,I’vecomeoutaheadofBaronessMaryWarnockAchievablegoals:thefirststeptoselfimprovementActually,IhavewrackedmymindandheartforwhatIoughttosaytoyoutodayIhaveaskedmyselfwhatIwishIhadknownatmyowngraduation,andwhatimportantlessonsIhavelearnedintheyearsthathaveexpiredbetweenthatdayandthisIhavecomeupwithtwoanswersOnthiswonderfuldaywhenwearegatheredtogethertocelebrateyouracademicsuccess,IhavedecidedtotalktoyouaboutthebenefitsoffailureAndasyoustandonthethresholdofwhatissometimescalled‘reallife’,IwanttoextolthecrucialimportanceofimaginationThesemayseemquixoticorparadoxicalchoices,butpleasebearwithmeLookingbackattheyearoldthatIwasatgraduation,isaslightlyuncomfortableexperiencefortheyearoldthatshehasbecomeHalfmylifetimeago,IwasstrikinganuneasybalancebetweentheambitionIhadformyself,andwhatthoseclosesttomeexpectedofmeIwasconvincedthattheonlythingIwantedtodo,ever,wastowritenovelsHowever,myparents,bothofwhomcamefromimpoverishedbackgroundsandneitherofwhomhadbeentocollege,tooktheviewthatmyoveractiveimaginationwasanamusingpersonalquirkthatwouldneverpayamortgage,orsecureapensionIknowthattheironystrikeswiththeforceofacartoonanvil,nowSotheyhopedthatIwouldtakeavocationaldegreeIwantedtostudyEnglishLiteratureAcompromisewasreachedthatinretrospectsatisfiednobody,andIwentuptostudyModernLanguagesHardlyhadmyparents’carroundedthecornerattheendoftheroadthanIditchedGermanandscuttledoffdowntheClassicscorridorIcannotremembertellingmyparentsthatIwasstudyingClassicstheymightwellhavefoundoutforthefirsttimeongraduationdayOfallthesubjectsonthisplanet,IthinktheywouldhavebeenhardputtonameonelessusefulthanGreekmythologywhenitcametosecuringthekeystoanexecutivebathroomIwouldliketomakeitclear,inparenthesis,thatIdonotblamemyparentsfortheirpointofviewThereisanexpirydateonblamingyourparentsforsteeringyouinthewrongdirectionthemomentyouareoldenoughtotakethewheel,responsibilitylieswithyouWhatismore,IcannotcriticisemyparentsforhopingthatIwouldneverexperiencepovertyTheyhadbeenpoorthemselves,andIhavesincebeenpoor,andIquiteagreewiththemthatitisnotanennoblingexperiencePovertyentailsfear,andstress,andsometimesdepressionitmeansathousandpettyhumiliationsandhardshipsClimbingoutofpovertybyyourownefforts,thatisindeedsomethingonwhichtoprideyourself,butpovertyitselfisromanticisedonlybyfoolsWhatIfearedmostformyselfatyouragewasnotpoverty,butfailureAtyourage,inspiteofadistinctlackofmotivationatuniversity,whereIhadspentfartoolonginthecoffeebarwritingstories,andfartoolittletimeatlectures,Ihadaknackforpassingexaminations,andthat,foryears,hadbeenthemeasureofsuccessinmylifeandthatofmypeersIamnotdullenoughtosupposethatbecauseyouareyoung,giftedandwelleducated,youhaveneverknownhardshiporheartbreakTalentandintelligenceneveryetinoculatedanyoneagainstthecapriceoftheFates,andIdonotforamomentsupposethateveryoneherehasenjoyedanexistenceofunruffledprivilegeandcontentmentHowever,thefactthatyouaregraduatingfromHarvardsuggeststhatyouarenotverywellacquaintedwithfailureYoumightbedrivenbyafearoffailurequiteasmuchasadesireforsuccessIndeed,yourconceptionoffailuremightnotbetoofarfromtheaverageperson’sideaofsuccess,sohighhaveyoualreadyflownUltimately,weallhavetodecideforourselveswhatconstitutesfailure,buttheworldisquiteeagertogiveyouasetofcriteriaifyouletitSoIthinkitfairtosaythatbyanyconventionalmeasure,ameresevenyearsaftermygraduationday,IhadfailedonanepicscaleAnexceptionallyshortlivedmarriagehadimploded,andIwasjobless,aloneparent,andaspoorasitispossibletobeinmodernBritain,withoutbeinghomelessThefearsthatmyparentshadhadforme,andthatIhadhadformyself,hadbothcometopass,andbyeveryusualstandard,IwasthebiggestfailureIknewNow,IamnotgoingtostandhereandtellyouthatfailureisfunThatperiodofmylifewasadarkone,andIhadnoideathattherewasgoingtobewhatthepresshassincerepresentedasakindoffairytaleresolutionIhadnoideathenhowfarthetunnelextended,andforalongtime,anylightattheendofitwasahoperatherthanarealitySowhydoItalkaboutthebenefitsoffailureSimplybecausefailuremeantastrippingawayoftheinessentialIstoppedpretendingtomyselfthatIwasanythingotherthanwhatIwas,andbegantodirectallmyenergyintofinishingtheonlyworkthatmatteredtomeHadIreallysucceededatanythingelse,ImightneverhavefoundthedeterminationtosucceedintheonearenaIbelievedItrulybelongedIwassetfree,becausemygreatestfearhadbeenrealised,andIwasstillalive,andIstillhadadaughterwhomIadored,andIhadanoldtypewriterandabigideaAndsorockbottombecamethesolidfoundationonwhichIrebuiltmylifeYoumightneverfailonthescaleIdid,butsomefailureinlifeisinevitableItisimpossibletolivewithoutfailingatsomething,unlessyoulivesocautiouslythatyoumightaswellnothavelivedatall–inwhichcase,youfailbydefaultFailuregavemeaninnersecuritythatIhadneverattainedbypassingexaminationsFailuretaughtmethingsaboutmyselfthatIcouldhavelearnednootherwayIdiscoveredthatIhadastrongwill,andmoredisciplinethanIhadsuspectedIalsofoundoutthatIhadfriendswhosevaluewastrulyabovethepriceofrubiesTheknowledgethatyouhaveemergedwiserandstrongerfromsetbacksmeansthatyouare,everafter,secureinyourabilitytosurviveYouwillnevertrulyknowyourself,orthestrengthofyourrelationships,untilbothhavebeentestedbyadversitySuchknowledgeisatruegift,forallthatitispainfullywon,andithasbeenworthmorethananyqualificationIeverearnedSogivenaTimeTurner,IwouldtellmyyearoldselfthatpersonalhappinessliesinknowingthatlifeisnotachecklistofacquisitionorachievementYourqualifications,yourCV,arenotyourlife,thoughyouwillmeetmanypeopleofmyageandolderwhoconfusethetwoLifeisdifficult,andcomplicated,andbeyondanyone’stotalcontrol,andthehumilitytoknowthatwillenableyoutosurviveitsvicissitudesNowyoumightthinkthatIchosemysecondtheme,theimportanceofimagination,becauseofthepartitplayedinrebuildingmylife,butthatisnotwhollysoThoughIpersonallywilldefendthevalueofbedtimestoriestomylastgasp,IhavelearnedtovalueimaginationinamuchbroadersenseImaginationisnotonlytheuniquelyhumancapacitytoenvisionthatwhichisnot,andthereforethefountofallinventionandinnovationInitsarguablymosttransformativeandrevelatorycapacity,itisthepowerthatenablesustoempathisewithhumanswhoseexperienceswehaveneversharedOneofthegreatestformativeexperiencesofmylifeprecededHarryPotter,thoughitinformedmuchofwhatIsubsequentlywroteinthosebooksThisrevelationcameintheformofoneofmyearliestdayjobsThoughIwasslopingofftowritestoriesduringmylunchhours,IpaidtherentinmyearlysbyworkingattheAfricanresearchdepartmentatAmnestyInternational’sheadquartersinLondonThereinmylittleofficeIreadhastilyscribbledletterssmuggledoutoftotalitarianregimesbymenandwomenwhowereriskingimprisonmenttoinformtheoutsideworldofwhatwashappeningtothemIsawphotographsofthosewhohaddisappearedwithouttrace,senttoAmnestybytheirdesperatefamiliesandfriendsIreadthetestimonyoftorturevictimsandsawpicturesoftheirinjuriesIopenedhandwritten,eyewitnessaccountsofsummarytrialsandexecutions,ofkidnappingsandrapesManyofmycoworkerswereexpoliticalprisoners,peoplewhohadbeendisplacedfromtheirhomes,orfledintoexile,becausetheyhadthetemeritytospeakagainsttheirgovernmentsVisitorstoourofficesincludedthosewhohadcometogiveinformation,ortotryandfindoutwhathadhappenedtothosetheyhadleftbehindIshallneverforgettheAfricantorturevictim,ayoungmannoolderthanIwasatthetime,whohadbecomementallyillafterallhehadenduredinhishomelandHetrembleduncontrollablyashespokeintoavideocameraaboutthebrutalityinflicteduponhimHewasafoottallerthanIwas,andseemedasfragileasachildIwasgiventhejobofescortinghimbacktotheUndergroundStationafterwards,andthismanwhoselifehadbeenshatteredbycrueltytookmyhandwithexquisitecourtesy,andwishedmefuturehappinessAndaslongasIliveIshallrememberwalkingalonganemptycorridorandsuddenlyhearing,frombehindacloseddoor,ascreamofpainandhorrorsuchasIhaveneverheardsinceThedooropened,andtheresearcherpokedoutherheadandtoldmetorunandmakeahotdrinkfortheyoungmansittingwithherShehadjusthadtogivehimthenewsthatinretaliationforhisownoutspokennessagainsthiscountry’sregime,hismotherhadbeenseizedandexecutedEverydayofmyworkingweekinmyearlysIwasremindedhowincrediblyfortunateIwas,toliveinacountrywithademocraticallyelectedgovernment,wherelegalrepresentationandapublictrialweretherightsofeveryoneEveryday,Isawmoreevidenceabouttheevilshumankindwillinflictontheirfellowhumans,togainormaintainpowerIbegantohavenightmares,literalnightmares,aboutsomeofthethingsIsaw,heard,andreadAndyetIalsolearnedmoreabouthumangoodnessatAmnestyInternationalthanIhadeverknownbeforeAmnestymobilisesthousandsofpeoplewhohaveneverbeentorturedorimprisonedfortheirbeliefstoactonbehalfofthosewhohaveThepowerofhumanempathy,leadingtocollectiveaction,saveslives,andfreesprisonersOrdinarypeople,whosepersonalwellbeingandsecurityareassured,jointogetherinhugenumberstosavepeopletheydonotknow,andwillnevermeetMysmallparticipationinthatprocesswasoneofthemosthumblingandinspiringexperiencesofmylifeUnlikeanyothercreatureonthisplanet,humanscanlearnandunderstand,withouthavingexperiencedTheycanthinkthemselvesintootherpeople’splacesOfcourse,thisisapower,likemybrandoffictionalmagic,thatismorallyneutralOnemightusesuchanabilitytomanipulate,orcontrol,justasmuchastounderstandorsympathiseAndmanyprefernottoexercisetheirimaginationsatallTheychoosetoremaincomfortablywithintheboundsoftheirownexperience,nevertroublingtowonderhowitwouldfeeltohavebeenbornotherthantheyareTheycanrefusetohearscreamsortopeerinsidecagestheycanclosetheirmindsandheartstoanysufferingthatdoesnottouchthempersonallytheycanrefusetoknowImightbetemptedtoenvypeoplewhocanlivethatway,exceptthatIdonotthinktheyhaveanyfewernightmaresthanIdoChoosingtoliveinnarrowspacesleadstoaformofmentalagoraphobia,andthatbringsitsownterrorsIthinkthewilfullyunimaginativeseemoremonstersTheyareoftenmoreafraidWhatismore,thosewhochoosenottoempathiseenablerealmonstersForwithoutevercommittinganactofoutrightevilourselves,wecolludewithit,throughourownapathyOneofthemanythingsIlearnedattheendofthatClassicscorridordownwhichIventuredattheageof,insearchofsomethingIcouldnotthendefine,wasthis,writtenbytheGreekauthorPlutarch:WhatweachieveinwardlywillchangeouterrealityThatisanastonishingstatementandyetprovenathousandtimeseverydayofourlivesItexpresses,inpart,ourinescapableconnectionwiththeoutsideworld,thefactthatwetouchotherpeople’slivessimplybyexistingButhowmuchmoreareyou,Harvardgraduatesof,likelytotouchotherpeople’slivesYourintelligence,yourcapacityforhardwork,theeducationyouhaveearnedandreceived,giveyouuniquestatus,anduniqueresponsibilitiesEvenyournationalitysetsyouapartThegreatmajorityofyoubelongtotheworld’sonlyremainingsuperpowerThewayyouvote,thewayyoulive,thewayyouprotest,thepressureyoubringtobearonyourgovernment,hasanimpactwaybeyondyourbordersThatisyourprivilege,andyourburdenIfyouchoosetouseyourstatusandinfluencetoraiseyourvoiceonbehalfofthosewhohavenovoiceifyouchoosetoidentifynotonlywiththepowerful,butwiththepowerlessifyouretaintheabilitytoimagineyourselfintothelivesofthosewhodonothaveyouradvantages,thenitwillnotonlybeyourproudfamilieswhocelebrateyourexistence,butthousandsandmillionsofpeoplewhoserealityyouhavehelpedchangeWedonotneedmagictochangetheworld,wecarryallthepowerweneedinsideourselvesalready:wehavethepowertoimaginebetterIamnearlyfinishedIhaveonelasthopeforyou,whichissomethingthatIalreadyhadatThefriendswithwhomIsatongraduationdayhavebeenmyfriendsforlifeTheyaremychildren’sgodparents,thepeopletowhomI’vebeenabletoturnintimesoftrouble,peoplewhohavebeenkindenoughnottosuemewhenItooktheirnamesforDeathEatersAtourgraduationwewereboundbyenormousaffection,byoursharedexperienceofatimethatcouldnevercomeagain,and,ofcourse,bytheknowledgethatweheldcertainphotographicevidencethatwouldbeexceptionallyvaluableifanyofusranforPrimeMinisterSotoday,IwishyounothingbetterthansimilarfriendshipsAndtomorrow,Ihopethatevenifyouremembernotasinglewordofmine,yourememberthoseofSeneca,anotherofthoseoldRomansImetwhenIfleddowntheClassicscorridor,inretreatfromcareerladders,insearchofancientwisdom:Asisatale,soislife:nothowlongitis,buthowgooditis,iswhatmattersIwishyouallverygoodlivesThankyouverymuch
