library and people kept 38 me. I was getting more and more 39

47 .
Because I left the library in such a hurry, I didn’t realize I’d left my most
important textbook behind until I was home. By then the library was already
closed. I was so upset that I almost cried. Just then, the phone rang. I
answered it and a gentle voice introduced the speaker as Jenny. After 48
who I was, Jenny said that she had noticed I’d left my book in the library and
as my name was in it, she’d asked a 49 to get my phone number from
their files. She said she could 50 it around for me if I needed it.
I sighed with 51 and agreed to meet her at the convenience store
down the road. Of course you’ve guessed who Jenny was. She was the girl I

apologized several times for my rude behavior. But Jenny just laughed and
told me she was glad to see that I’d also left my glare in the library! I couldn’t
help 54 this and I invited her back to my apartment for a quick cup of
tea.
We got along really well and ever since then we’ve been best friends. I
often think how lucky I am. If Jenny hadn’t been so kind to be willing to 55

monthly book club has changed many of her viewers from TV “couch

Runners in a relay(接力)race pass a stick in one direction. However,
merchants passed silk, gold, fruit, and g1ass along the Silk Road in more than
one direction. They earned their living by traveling the famous Silk Road.
The Silk Road was not a simple trading network. It passed through
thousands of cities and towns. It started from eastern China, across Central
Asia and the Middle East, and ended in the Mediterranean Sea. It was used
from about 200 B.C. to about A.D.1300, when sea travel offered new routes
(路线). It was sometimes called the world’s longest highway. However, the
Silk Road was made up of many routes, not one smooth path. They passed
through what are now 18 countries. The routes crossed mountains and deserts
and had many dangers of hot sun, deep snow and even battles. Only
experienced traders could return safe.
The Silk Road got its name from its most prized product. Silk could be
used like money to pay taxes or buy goods. But the traders carried more than
just silk. Gold, silver, and glass from Europe were much found in the Middle
East and Asia. Horses traded from other areas changed farming practices in
China. Indian merchants traded salt and other valuable goods. Chinese
merchants traded paper, which produced an immediate effect on the West.
Apples traveled from centre Asia to Rome. The Chinese had learned to
graft(嫁接) different trees together to make new kinds of fruit. They passed
this science on to others, including the Romans. The Romans used grafting to
grow the apple. Trading along the Silk Road led to world-wide business 2,000
years before the World Wide Web.

A hobby can be almost anything a person likes to do in his spare time.
Hobbists raise pets, build model ships, or carve soap figures. Hobbists also
paint pictures, attend concerts and plays, and perform on musical
instruments. They collect everything from books to butterflies and from
shells to stamps.People take up hobbies because these activities offer
enjoyment, friendship, knowledge, and relaxation. Sometimes they even
yield financial profits. Hobbies help people relax after periods of hard work,
and provide a balance between work and play. Anyone, rich or poor, old or
young, sick or well, can follow a satisfying hobby, regardless of his age,
position, or income. Hobbies can help a person’s mental and physical health.
Doctors have found that hobbies are valuable in helping patients recover from
physical or mental disease.
In early times, most people were too busy making a living to have many
hobbies. But some people who had leisure did enjoy hobbies. People today
have more time than ever before for hobbies. Machines and automation have
reduced the amount of time they must spend on their jobs. Hobbies provide
variety for workers who do the same tasks all day long.
