calpoliticalreXectionfromthesandurbansociologyinthebroadestsensefromthesyetthingsareneverquiteasplainandsimpleastheyseemEveryreaderofBaudrillardandhiscriticsandinterlocutorsknowstheimportanceofthetropeofforgetting:forgettingsomeone’sdiscourseinparticular(Foucault)asacriticalformofrevealingittoperfectlymirrortheobject(power)itunknowinglylegitimatesandextendsanothercallto‘forget’intheformofadismissal–ofBaudrillard,noless,asapseudocriticalimperative,atiredpostmodernswipeandthebinarypartitioningofthewordasanexpressionofdividedloyalties:for(get)BaudrillardandeventhereminderofsansoublierBaudrillard–let’snotforgethim,ok–asabackhandedformofcriticalacknowledgementThereareundoubtedlymoreexamples,butIhaveforgottenthemNo,itisnotastrugglebetweeninWnitiveandimperativeofspacingandbracketsnotevenoneoflastminuteinclusion,nomatterhowknowinglyitmayhavebeenusedIntroqxd:AMPageTheseareunforgottenessaysessaysthathavenotbeen,onthewhole,subjecttoforgettinginanyoftheaforementionedsensesTheyarenotnew,thoughonlyafewhaveappearedinEnglishbeforethispublicationsomeareactuallyfairlyoldanddatefromthelatesandearlysbeforeBaudrillardbecameBaudrillardAlmostallofthemhavebeenatleastmentionedinbibliographiesofBaudrillard’swritingsomyclaimisnottooriginality,oreventowilyarchivalworkOnlyoneortwoofthemostwellknownpieceshavebeentheobjectofconcertedcriticalreXection,atleastintheEnglishlanguageliteratureHowdidthiscollectioncomeaboutTheanswerisdeceptivelysimpleItisawishlistWhosewishes,youmaybewonderingIcanvassedanumberofseniorandjuniorresearchersintheWeldandaskedthemtolistthetoptenorsoarticlesbyBaudrillardthattheywouldeitherliketoseetranslatedandinprintorrescuedfromoutofprintpublicationsAllofthelistswereremarkablysimilarbecauseeverybodyknewinadvancewhicharticles–andversions–wereatissuebeforeIhadevenposedthequestionThesearticleswere,then,neverreallyforgotten,justuncollectedtheywaitedpatientlyuntiltheywouldagainseethelightofdayinanotherlanguageandinsomecasesinanotherformatIfthereisanythingnewinallofthisitisthatthesetextsarefreshlyunforgottenafterlanguishingfortoolonginthebibliographiesofobsessiveresearchersStill,noteveryonewillbesatisWed,especiallythosewhoalwaysthinkthereismoretocomeorthatIhaven’tdugdeepenough,beenthoroughenough,orthatIwillprobablyenduppublishinghisshoppinglistsUnforgotten:betweenforgettingandrememberingtheprojectbecomesoneofrecollectionandtheworkitselfinvolvessortingthroughtheobviouschoicesThearticlesinthisbookdonotevenhavethecharmofhavingbeenlostlostandfoundisperhapsmoreaccurateinitsparadoxicalityTheywerethereallalongandeverybodyconcernedknewitThereisnothingtoberevealedabouttheidentityofBaudrillardthatwasnotalreadyknowninonewayoranother,ifmerelysignalledbythebibliographersamongusYes,wemayneedabiographyofBaudrillard,butyouwon’tWndithereEveryreaderofBaudrillardknowshiscritiqueofresidualmeaningasanantisymbolicprinciple(latent,hidden,repressed,remaindered,somethingmeaningful)fromtheperspectiveofthesymbolicinhisparticularuseofitBaudrillard(:)argues,usingthepoeticandcomicashisexamples,forthatwhichistotallyresolvablewithnothingleftoverandnothingbehindit,eitherItisinthisspiritthatIofferthis(un)collectionThereisonlyintenseenjoymentinanexterminatingsymbolicexchangeunforgettingisnotagameofresurrectionItisagameofexchangeamongreadersofBaudrillardinwhichalimitednumberofobscurearticles(thoseontheaforementionedwishlists)arecriticallyconsumedinalittle‘potlatch’ofresearchThisisanofferinginexchangeforthosewishlists,amongothergiftsAndourmilieu,ourprofessionalsymbolicorder,involvestheexchangeoftexts,sharingandcontestingideas,anddevelopingnewconceptsAbooklikethisonewillprobablyneverhaveimmensesignvalueasaresultofbeingfetishized–likeAmerica,forinstance–eventhoughmanybooksbyBaudrillardhavemetthisfateButthismerelyillustrateswhatMikeGane(a:)pointedoutsomeyearsago:symbolicexchangeandsignconsumptionareinterwovenTheUncollectedBaudrillardIntroqxd:AMPagedespiteBaudrillard’sdesiretotakethepositionoftheformeragainstthelatterThepublishingeconomyofsignexchangeandexchangevaluecombineswiththegiftexchangeamongresearchersandreaders,criticsandfriendsalikeTherearestillallofthoseoffprintsandauthor’scopiestodosomethingwith,afterallThosewhowouldcriticizemyselectionmightdosofromthevantagepointofsurplusvalueandtheallegedaZuenceofresearchmaterials(thereisalwaysmoretobediscoveredorIhaveheldsomethingbacktoincreasethepowerofmyposition)ThiswouldthreatenthedelicacyofreciprocityandinstituteseparationintheformofahierarchicalrelationofpowerinwhichIheldthedecisivecardbygettingtothesourceWrst,orWndingwhathithertocouldnotbefoundThisiswhyIhaveinsistedthattheseessaysareunforgotten,lostandfound,already(t)hereButinreturningthisvolumeasacountergift,IcannotfailtoenterintoagameofcancellationinwhichitisimpossibleformetoassumesuchapositionofpowerBaudrillardiansymbolicexchangecancelsauthorityandinstitutestheobligationtorespondasitsfundamentalruleNotonlytheobligationofgiving,butofreceivingaswell,andreturninginkindasitsownendnodepartmentaldirtytricksandnolongknivesnoholdingoutagainstthecompetitionorracingtothepublisherRecollectionandexchangeisamatterofelimination–eliminationbypublication,eliminationthroughcelebration,editingasanactofliquidationasBaudrillardputitwithregardtopsychoanalysis:‘therealanalyticoperationeliminatesitsobjectwhichcomestoanendinit’(:)Theobjectatissueisnot,ofcourse,BaudrillardRather,itistheobjectofknowledge(ofthesetextsbyBaudrillardthatIhavechosenandorganizedandpresentedinaspeciWcwayunderthesignofanoriginaleditorialimpulseandcontributiontotheliteraturebecausetheywereinsomemanner‘missing’),masteryofwhichitisassumedthatI,editorexpert,possessandwillactualize,andperhapscontinuallypropupbysomepromotionalmeansMasteryisrelinquishedinthesymboliccircuitandthesubjectofknowledgeiscancelledinhisobjectofknowledgeThisisanintenselypleasurableexperience,Baudrillardsuggests,anditisthekindofexpenditureinwhichnothingremainstobeaccumulatedresidueswouldbetheuncancelledseedsofpowerinthisscenarioTheremainderless,asopposedtotheremaindered,book:thiswouldbethe‘continuityofNothing’aboutwhichBaudrillardwroteabovewithreferencetothethirdvolumeofhisCoolMemoriesCollectionslikethisoneare,inthissense,likecollectionsoffragmentsbecauseperhapstheywillonedayamounttonothingandinsodoingdemonstratetheBaudrillardianreversalofmeaningandnothingnessForwhatislackinginoverallcoherenceandthedevelopmentofideas,exhaustivedevelopmentalperspectiveandcriticalinsightwillberegainedindelicacy,lightness,banality,brevity,andlazinessThetermsofthisofferingarebothlimitedandsevereLimitedintheWrstandsecondinstancesbythenumberoftextsatissueandbytherelativelysmallaudienceinterestedinsuchmattersonlyforwhomthisintroductionwaswrittenwiththepresuppositionofacertainsensitivitytothesymbolicinBaudrillardButsevereinthesensethatthedisavowalofmasteryandtheideaofcancellationinthesymboliccircuit,makingitimpossibletoclaimthatthisbookrevealsthesecretidentityanddesireofBaudrillardorthehiddentopicofhiswork,alsoentailsthatitisnotpossibletousetheworkasacriticalhammerorevenasatoolIntroductionIntroqxd:AMPageofafeignedindifference(‘BythetimeitcameoutI’dlostinterest’)Theworkentersintoasocialrelationandtherebylosesitsselfcentrednessitsfullnessemptied,itslatencyevacuated,itsmeaningnolongerradiatingacrosstheliterature,resolutionisachievedand,withit,laughterandenjoymentAfewissuesremainTothose(Zurbrugg)whowouldpositionBaudrillardasaphotographerwithoutreferencetohiscutandpasteconstructionofquotationsforSwissbornRenéBurri’scollectionofphotographsTheGermans(from,theyearafterhecameintocontactwiththepostwarGermanavantgardegroupofartistsknownasGruppe’,numberedaftertheyearofitsfoundingin,theyearoftheMarshallPlan,andwhosemembers,andenemies,includedthecreamoftheliterarycrop–Böll,Grass,Weissthelatter’splaysBaudrillardtranslatedintoFrench,etc),thereisaselectionfromBaudrillard’sownaccompanyingtextonGermancharacterandcultureBurri’sTheGermanswasaEuropeanversionofRobertFrank’sAmericansBaudrillard’stextisalmostentirelymadeupofquotes,withafewmotifsthathintathislaterpreoccupations:heusesthetwoeditions(orientaleandoccidentale)oftheDudendictionarytolookatdeWnitionsofkeywords:atheism,individualism,democracy,idealismThecontrastsareextraordinaryThereisaremarkablesectionentitled‘InanimateObjects:DoTheyHaveaSoul’inwhichBaudrillardnotesthattalkingcigarettemachinesregaleyouwitha‘VielenDank!AufWiedersehen’afterasuccessfulpurchase,andeiderdownhasawayofslippingoffthebedduringthenighttheseareintimationsofhistheoryoftherevengeofobjectsthathedevelopedlaterinthedecadeNestledamongstthequotationsbyauthorsfrommanynationsareafewbyGermannovelistUweJohnson(–),whosework,inFrenchtranslation,hereviewedinforLesTempsModernesOneofBaudrillard’spreoccupationsatthetimewastherepresentationofthetwoGermanies,amotifthatwasacuteinJohnson’slifeandworksinceheXedtheEastfortheWestinafterthepublicationofhisWrstbook,whichwasthoughttobetoocriticalInBaudrillard’sreviewessay,hedescribesJohnson’smethod–theobjectivityofdescriptionoffunctionalthingswhichare‘theperceptibleformthatthecollectivitytakes’–asanartisan’sMarxismWearesoaccustomedtothelaterBaudrillard’sdescriptionsoftheantiquationofhistorywiththe‘vagueterrain’createdbythefalloftheBerlinWall–‘Istandbeforethiswallwithastonishment,andInolongermanagetorememberanything’(:–)–thattheseinterests,whiletechnicallyunforgotten,seemnotverycoolatallPreviouslyuncollectedworkscanbe,infact,quitehotThereisalwaysthetemptation,ofcourse,toreadtheearlyBaudrillardthroughthelenshislaterworkandthusinvesttheformerwithallthedominanttrendsandinterestsofthelatteryetthereislittletobelearnedbythis,butbathingtheuncollectedinthegoldenlightofdecadesofreWnementandinternationalfameisawaytoraiseitsstatusLuckily,therearefewexamplesthatsuggestnothingofthesortInthecriticalreviewsofCalvinoandStyron,Baudrillardwarnsagainstthecharmsoftheformer’sstyle(subtleandaccomplished,yes,butforcedandpassive,aswell)andthelatter’sexcessivebaroqueformalityInhisbookreviewing–apractice,afterall,ofretellingsomeoneelse’sstory–unlikehistranslationworkonGermanliterature,whichpointsbeyonditself,Baudrillard’sworkislimitedandTheUncollectedBaudrillardIntroqxd:AMPageprovideslittlefuelforoverinterpretationStill,whenBaudrillardmentionshisworkonBrecht’sDialoguesd’exiléswithGilbertBadia,circa,inamuchlaterinterview,itistounderlinethispoint:‘Iwillneverreadthemagain,buttheirinXuenceremainswithmeinotherways’(seeGane:)Thetranslation,almostthirtyyearsafterthefact,ofBaudrillard’simportantearlybooksonconsumersociety,SystemofObjects()andConsumerSociety(),notonlyprovidesaframefortheinvestigationsintothedevelopmentofhisapproachtomassmediatedlife,therebysituatinghimalongsideBarthesasakeythinkerofthematurationofFrenchconsumersociety,butalsogivearenewedsenseofurgencytothetaskForitbecomesclearthattherangeofwork–onMcLuhan,Lefebvre,Marcuse,urbansociologyofUtopie,andmoreproperlysociologicaltopicssuchasanomie,masses,andsocialcontrol–wasacutelyinsightfulandtightlystructuredthatBaudrillardwas,infact,engagedwithcriticaltheoryItisalsoclearthatheabsorbedmostfromthosehecriticizedseverelyandthusmaybesaidtohavereadmostclosely:McLuhan(thepitfallsofthemediumtheoryofcommunication)andLefebvre(t
