TheWheelofTimeByRobertJordanTheStrikeatShayolGhulbyRobertJordan(APreliminaryIntroduction)byJorilleMondevin,RoyalHistoriantotheCourtofHerMostIlluminatedMajesty,EthenielleKirukonMaterasu,BytheBlessingoftheLight,QueenofKandor,ProtectoroftheLand,ShieldoftheNorth,HighSeatofHouseMaterasuneofthemostimportantfindsofrecentyears,perhapssincetheBreaking,isapartialcopyofnolessthanahistoryoftheworldfromthedrillingoftheBoreintotheDarkOne'sPrisontotheEndoftheBreakingoftheworldTheoriginalapparentlydatedfromearlyintheFirstCenturyABDespitetheextremepaucityofmaterialfromtheentirefirstmillenniumaftertheBreaking,wecanonlybethankfulthattheartofprintingsurvivedtheBreakingoftheWorldwhensomuchelsedidnot,andwasindeedpracticedtosomeextentduringtheBreakingitself,thoughundersevereandrestrictedconditionsConsideringthewidespreaddestructionofTheTrollocWarsandtheWaroftheHundredYears,whichalthoughfarlessthantheneartotalityoftheBreakingstillsawcities,nations,andfarworse,knowledge,gotothefires,wemustmarvelatanywritingthathassurvivedmorethanthreethousandyearsWhatweknowisbasedonfragments,copiedandrecopiedathousandtimes,butatleastweknowsomethingfromthemEvenalittleknowledgeisbetterthanignoranceDiscoveredinadustystorageroominChachin,thepageswereinachestfullofoldbillsandreceipts,students'copybooksandprivatediaries,somesofoxedbyageandwithinksofadedastobeunreadablewherethepagesthemselveshadnotcrumbledThefragmentarymanuscriptwasreadable,barely,butpresentedtheusualproblems,quiteasidefromthedifficultiesoftranslationanddealingwithcenturiesofcopyists'errorssuchahistorywouldnodoubtbeavast,multivolumework(pleaseseetheauthor'sNote),yetofthetwohundredandtwelvesurvivingpages,thelargestnumberofconsecutivepagesnumbersix,andnowhereelsemorethantwoSuchdatesasaregivenaretotallyincomprehensible,asnocalendardatingfromtheAgeofLegendshaseverbeenfoundManyreferencestocataclysmicevents(direbattlesandcitiesdestroyedbybalefireduringtheWaroftheShadow,wholeregionscoveredbytheseaandmountainrangesraisedovernightduringtheBreaking)andtosuchminutiaeastheappearanceofacertainpersonarebutcuriositiesThepageswhichmightrevealexactlywherethesethingshappened,whattheirspecialsignificancewas,theresolutionorendresult,areusuallymissingWhythenisthiscollectionsoimportantFirstbecause,sunderedasitis,itcontainsmoreinformationoftheWaroftheShadowthananyotherknownsinglesource,perhapsasmuchasallothersourcescombinedinsomewaysButevenmoreimportantly,itgivesagreatdealofinformationavailablenowhereelseAndmostimportantlyofall,thesixconsecutivepagesandotherswhichmustbeplacedclosetothemcontaintheonlyknownaccountofeventssurroundingwhatsurelymustbethemostfarreachingsingleeventinthehistoryoftheworld,inanyAge:thesealingoftheBorebyLewsTherinTelamonandtheHundredCompanionsWestillcannotbecertainhowlongpassedbetweenthecreationoftheBoreandtheactualbeginningofwhatwouldcometobecalledtheWaroftheShadow,yetplainlyatleastfiftyyearsandpossiblymorethanonehundredweremarkedbyarapiddeclineinthesocialorderandanequallyrapidincreaseinathousandillsthatpreviouslyhadbeeneitherrareorentirelyunknownWaritselfwasa"new"discovery,itseems,thoughonequicklylearned,somemightevensayperfectedTheWaroftheShadowtiltedoneway,thenanother,infireandblood,overitscourseDuringthefirstthreeyears,theShadowmadegreatgains,andlargepartsoftheworldfellbeneaththehorroroftheDarkOne'sdominion,howeverindirectlythroughhumanrepresentativesAndsurely,thepresenceofMyrddraalandTrollocscannotbecalledindirectUndertheleadershipofLewsTherinTelamon,thelegendaryDragonoftheProphecies,muchofwhathadbeenlostwasretakenoverthenextfouryears,thoughnotwithoutreversesAtthatpoint,astalematedeveloped,andfornearlyayearneithersidewasabletoeffectanygaindespitefiercefighting,butwhenthestalematebroke,theShadowbegantoadvanceagain,slowlyatfirstbutwitheverincreasingspeedAccordingtothewriterofthatfragmentaryhistory,"ItwasasifeverystepforwardbytheShadowscatteredthesporesofchaosbeforeit,andfeedingonwhatgrew,theShadowgainedstrength,sothatitsnextstridewaslonger,andthenextstepwouldbelongerstill"Hugeareashadbeendevastatedtovaryingdegreesbythistimeasthewarsurgedbackandfortharoundtheworld,anditwasobviousthatwhiletheShadowwaswillingtostarveormurderagreatpercentageofthepopulationintheconqueredterritories,theforcesoftheLightcouldnolongersustainaprotractedwarTheywerelosing,beingpushedtowardinevitabledefeatwithincreasingspeed,andiftheyweretowinatall,itmustbedonequicklyOneoftheplansforendingthewarquickly,proposedbyLewsTherin,centeredaroundadirectattackontheBoreitselfSeven"focuspoints"(thereseemsnobettertranslationfromtheoldtongue,althoughtheyareobviouslytheSealsofLegend)wereconstructedofcuendillarAraidingforcesotheycalledit,thougheveninthelightofrecentpasteventsitmuststillseemalargearmytomostpeopleofthisdayaraidingforceconsistingofsometwentythousandsoldierstoprovidesecurityandacircleofsevenfemaleAesSedaiandsixmale(theminimumnumberbelievednecessary,andallthestrongestwhocouldbefound)wouldTraveltoShayolGhul,theoneplaceonearthwherewhathasbeencalled"athinnessinthePattern"makestheBoredetectable,andtheretoimplantsealsheldbythefocuspointswhichwouldcloseuptheBoreandshuttheDarkOnefromtheworldoncemoreThisplanwasconsideredriskyforanumberofreasonsEventodayitisknownthattheDarkOnehasacertaindegreeofeffectontheworldclosearoundShayolGhul,anditwasprobablethatanyattempttochanneltherewouldbeinstantlydetectedandtheraidingpartydestroyedLewsTherinhimself,whointendedtopersonallyleadthishugeraid,admittedthatevenwithsucess,heexpectedfewoftheattackerstosurvive,perhapsnoneWorse,severalexpertsclaimedthatifthesealswerenotplacedwithexactprecision,theresultingstrainwould,insteadofsealinguptheBore,ripitopen,freeingtheDarkOnecompletelyAnotherplanatthetimecenteredaroundtwohugesa'angreal,oneattunedtosaidinandonetosaidar,bothsopowerfulthatusingthemrequiredspecialter'angreal,likeminiatureversionsofthegreatsa'angreal,constructedespeciallyforthepurposeofaccessingthesa'angrealThisprojecthaditsdetractors,too,forthesa'angrealwereplannedtobesopowerfulthateitheronemightwellprovideenoughoftheOnePowertodestroytheworld,whilebothtogethercertainlywouldSomedoubtedthatsomuchoftheOnePowercouldbehandledsafelyunderthecircumstancesAgainstthatwasthecertainty,accordingtotheplan'ssupporters,thatusedtogethertheywouldprovidesufficientPowertodrivetheShadow'sforcesback,todefeatthemcompletelyanderectabarrieraroundShayolGhuluntilasafemethodofdealingwiththeBorewasassuredDetractorspointedoutthattheBorehadenlargedsinceitwasfirstdrilled,andbehindthebarricadeerectedbythesa'angrealitwouldcontinuetogrow,sothateventuallytheDarkOnemightfreehimselfwithinthebarrierThebarriermightwellcontaintheDarkOnewhenallhecoulddowasreachthroughtherelativelysmallBore,butcoulditholdbacktheDarkOneletlooseThehalloftheServantsquicklydividedintotwocamps,andthosewhofavoredoneplanderidedtheotherSupportfortheuseofthegreatsa'angrealandoppositiontoattemptingtoimplantthesealscenteredaroundawomannamedLatraPosaeDecumeApparentlyaspeakerofconsiderableforceandpersuasion,shegatheredalargeblocaroundher,butwhatassuredhervictorywasanagreementshereachedwitheveryfemaleAesSedaiofsignificantstrengthonthesideoftheLight(Inthemanuscript,thisagreementiscalled"theFatefulConcord,"thoughitwasdoubtfulthatthiswasthenameitwasgenerallyknown)LewsTherin'splanwastoorash,toodangerous,andnowomanwhoagreedtotheConcordwouldtakepartinitAspreciseplacementofthesealswaswidelythoughttorequireacircle,thatapparentlykilledtheplan,sincemencannotcreateacircle,butcanonlybebroughtintoonecreatedbywomenWorkonthesa'angreal,intheformoftwohugestatues,wasrushedforwardJustasthepairedsa'angrealwerecompleted,disasterstruckTheaccesster'angrealwerebeingmadeataplacefarremovedfromthesa'angreal(apparentlybecauseofadangerof"uncontrolledresonancesduringthefinalstages,"whateverthatmeans),andthatregionwasoverrunbyforcesunderSammaelTheonlygoodpointinitwasthattheter'angrealthemselveshadbeenhiddenandtheplacewheretheyweremadedestroyed(itsveryexistencehadbeenasecretatthehighestlevelsallalong)sothatneitherSammaelnoranyoneelsefortheShadowknewthatanyofthesethingswerenowwithintheirgraspThesideoftheLightstillhadthesa'angreal,butnosafewaytoaccessthemwithouttheter'angrealitwascertainthateventhestrongestAesSedaiwouldbeburnedoutinstantlybythehugeflowoftheOnePowerLewsTherinarguedagainforhisplan,acknowledgingtherisksbutsayingthatwasnowtheonlychance,yetPosaemaintainedheroppositionBeliefinthedangerofmisplacingthesealshadspread,andmanymorefemaleAesSedaihadpledgedtothe"FatefulConcord,"includingagreatnumberwhowerenowherenearstrongenoughtoqualifyfortheraidingpartycircleTempersandpassionsrose,andanapparentlyunprecedenteddivisionalongmalefemalelinesbegantodevelopamongtheAesSedaiingeneral,ifnotwithintheHallitselfFinallytheHalldecidedtocontinuewithLatraPosae'splan,andherpeoplebeganworkingtosmuggletheaccesster'angrealoutofShadowcontrolledterritoryAlmostimmediatelyontheheelsofSammael'sadvance,armiescommandedbyDemandredandBel'alstruckheavilyAtthispointinthewar,haltinganadvancebytheShadowwasthebestthatcouldbehopedfornoconqueredterritoryhadbeenregainedinthepasttwoyearsInintenseandbloodyfighting,thesetwodriveswerebarelycontained,butDemandredandBel'alkeptthepressureonSammaelbegananewoffensive,alsoscarcelyheld,andthereismentionofheavymilitaryactivityelsewhereApparentlybothofthegreatsa'angrealwerethreatenedbytheseoffensivesinfact,itwaspossiblethattheywerethetargetMassiveriotssweptanumberofcitiesstillheldbytheLightandthe"reemergenceofthepeacefaction"ismentioned,apparentlyagroupdemandingnegotiationswiththeForsakenThefinaldefeatwasathandthewillofthepeopletoresistwasfading,andshouldanyoneofthethreemajoroffensivescommandedbyForsakenbreakthroughtheendwouldbeonlyamatteroftime,perhapsaslittleasmonthsWithLatraPosae'soppositioncontinuinginthefaceoftheseevents,andthefemaleAesSedaiholdingtotheirpledgeandthusmakinguseofacircleimpossible(thelinesofdivisionhadhardenedtoapointwheremanyfemaleAesSedairefusedtospeaktomaleAesSedai,andthereverseaswell),LewsTherinresolvedtocarryouthisplanwithouttheapprovalof,orevenapproaching,theHallPlainlyitwasgoingtobeimpossibletoholdthehugesa'angreallongenoughfortheaccesster'angrealtobesmuggledoutI
