MICHAELJACKSONMOONWALKChapterOneI'vealwayswantedtobeabletotellstories,youknow,storiesthatcamefrommysoulI'dliketositbyafireandtellpeoplestoriesmakethemseepictures,makethemcryandlaugh,takethemanywhereemotionallywithsomethingasdeceptivelysimpleaswordsI'dliketotelltalestomovetheirsoulsandtransformthemI'vealwayswantedtobeabletodothatImaginehowthegreatwritersmustfeel,knowingtheyhavethatpowerIsometimesfeelIcoulddoitIt'ssomethingI'dliketodevelopInaway,songwritingusesthesameskills,createstheemotionalhighsandlows,butthestoryisasketchIt'squicksilverThereareveryfewbookswrittenontheartofstorytelling,howtogriplisteners,howtogetagroupofpeopletogetherandamusethemNocostumes,nomakeup,nonothing,justyouandyourvoice,andyourpowerfulabilitytotakethemanywhere,totransformtheirlives,ifonlyforminutesAsIbegintotellmystory,IwanttorepeatwhatIusuallysaytopeoplewhentheyaskmeaboutmyearliestdayswiththeJackson:IwassolittlewhenwebegantoworkonourmusicthatIreallydon'tremembermuchaboutitMostpeoplehavetheluxuryofcareersthatstartwhenthey'reoldenoughtoknowexactlywhatthey'redoingandwhy,but,ofcourse,thatwasn'ttrueofmeTheyremembereverythingthathappenedtothem,butIwasonlyfiveyearsoldWhenyou'reashowbusinesschild,youreallydon'thavethematuritytounderstandagreatdealofwhatisgoingonaroundyouPeoplemakealotofdecisionsconcerningyourlifewhenyou'reoutoftheroomSohere'swhatIrememberIremembersingingatthetopofmyvoiceanddancingwithrealjoyandworkingtoohardforachildOfcourse,therearemanydetailsIdon'trememberatallIdoremembertheJacksonreallytakingoffwhenIwasonlyeightornineIwasborninGary,Indiana,onalatesummernightin,theseventhofmyparents'ninechildrenMyfather,JoeJackson,wasborninArkansas,andinhemarriedmymother,KatherineScruse,whosepeoplecamefromAlabamaMysisterMaureenwasbornthefollowingyearandhadthetoughjobofbeingtheoldestJackie,Tito,Jermaine,LaToya,andMarlonwereallnextinlineRandyandJanetcameaftermeApartofmyearliestmemoriesismyfather'sjobworkinginthesteelmillItwastough,mindnumbingworkandheplayedmusicforescapeAtthesametime,mymotherwasworkinginadepartmentstoreBecauseofmyfather,andbecauseofmymother'sownloveofmusic,wehearditallthetimeathomeMyfatherandhisbrotherhadagroupcalledtheFalconswhowerethelocalRBbandMyfatherplayedtheguitar,asdidhisbrotherTheywoulddosomeofthegreatearlyrock‘n'rollandbluessongsbyChuckBerry,LittleRichard,OtisRedding,younameitAllthosestyleswereamazingandeachhadaninfluenceonJoeandonus,althoughweweretooyoungtoknowitatthetimeTheFalconspracticedinthelivingroomofourhouseinGary,soIwasraisedonRBSincewewereninekidsandmyfather'sbrotherhadeightofhisown,ourcombinednumbersmadeforahugefamilyMusicwaswhatwedidforentertainmentandthosetimeshelpedkeepustogetherandkindofencouragedmyfathertobeafamilyorientedmanTheJacksonwerebornoutofthistraditionwelaterbecametheJacksonsandbecauseofthistrainingandmusicaltradition,ImovedoutonmyownandestablishedasoundthatismineIremembermychildhoodasmostlywork,eventhoughIlovedtosingIwasn'tforcedintothisbusinessbystageparentsthewayJudyGarlandwasIdiditbecauseIenjoyeditandbecauseitwasasnaturaltomeasdrawingabreathandexhalingitIdiditbecauseIwascompelledtodoit,notmyparentsorfamily,butbymyowninnerlifeintheworldofmusicThereweretimes,letmemakethatclear,whenI'dcomehomefromschoolandI'donlyhavetimetoputmybooksdownandgetreadyforthestudioOncethere,I'dsinguntillateatnight,untilitwaspastmybedtime,reallyTherewasaparkacrossthestreetfromtheMotownstudio,andIcanrememberlookingatthosekidsplayinggamesI'djuststareattheminwonderIcouldn'timaginesuchfreedom,suchacarefreelifeandwishmorethananythingthatIhadthatkindoffreedom,thatIcouldwalkawayandbelikethemSothereweresadmomentsinmychildhoodIt'strueforanychildstarElizabethTaylortoldmeshefeltthesamewayWhenyou'reyoungandyou'reworking,theworldcanseemawfullyunfairIwasn'tforcedtobelittleMichaeltheleadsingerIdiditandIloveditbutitwashardworkIfweweredoinganalbum,forexample,we'dgoofftothestudioafterschoolandImightormightnotgetasnackSometimestherejustwasn'ttimeI'dcomehome,exhausted,andit'dbeelevenortwelveandpasttimetogotobedSoIverymuchidentifywithanyonewhoworkedasachildIknowhowtheystruggled,IknowwhattheysacrificedIalsoknowwhattheylearnedI'velearnedthatitbecomesmoreofachallengeasonegetsolderIfeeloldforsomereasonIreallyfeellikeanoldsoul,someonewho'sseenalotandexperiencedalotBecauseofalltheyearsI'veclockedin,it'shardformetoacceptthatIamonlytwentynineI'vebeeninthebusinessfortwentyfouryearsSometimesIfeellikeIshouldbeneartheendofmylife,turningeighty,withpeoplepattingmeonthebackThat'swhatcomesfromstartingsoyoungWhenIfirstperformedwithmybrothers,wewereknownastheJacksonsWewouldlaterbecometheJacksonStilllater,afterweleftMotown,wewouldreclaimtheJacksonsnameagainEveryoneofmyalbumsorthegroup'salbumshasbeendedicatedtoourmother,KatherineJackson,sincewetookoverourowncareersandbegantoproduceourownmusicMyfirstmemoriesareofherholdingmeandsingingsongslike"YouAreMySunshine"and"CottonFields"ShesangtomeandtomybrothersandsistersoftenEventhoughshehadlivedinIndianaforsometime,mymothergrewupinAlabama,andinthatpartofthecountryitwasjustascommonforblackpeopletoberaisedwithcountryandwesternmusicontheradioasitwasforthemtohearspiritualsinchurchShelikesWillieNelsontothisdayShehasalwayshadabeautifulvoiceandIsupposeIgotmysingingabilityfrommymotherand,ofcourse,fromGodMomplayedtheclarinetandthepiano,whichshetaughtmyoldestsister,Maureen,whomwecallRebbie,toplay,justasshe'dteachmyotheroldersister,LaToyaMymotherknew,fromanearlyage,thatshewouldneverperformthemusicshelovedinfrontofothers,notbecauseshedidn'thavethetalentandtheability,butbecauseshewascrippledbypolioasachildShegotoverthedisease,butnotwithoutapermanentlimpinherwalkShehadtomissagreatdealofschoolasachild,butshetoldusthatshewasluckytorecoveratatimewhenmanydiedfromthediseaseIrememberhowimportantitwastoherthatwegotthesugarcubevaccineSheevenmadeusmissayouthclubshowoneSaturdayafternoonthat'showimportantitwasinourfamilyMymotherknewherpoliowasnotacursebutatestthatGodgavehertotriumphover,andsheinstilledinmealoveofHimthatIwillalwayshaveShetaughtmethatmytalentforsinginganddancingwasasmuchGod'sworkasabeautifulsunsetorastormthatleftsnowforchildrentoplayinDespiteallthetimewespentrehearsingandtraveling,MomwouldfindtimetotakemetotheKingdomHalloftheJehovah'sWitnesses,usuallywithRebbieandLaToyaYearslater,afterwehadleftGary,weperformedon"TheEdSullivanShow",theliveSundaynightvarietyshowwhereAmericafirstsawtheBeatles,Elvis,andSlyandtheFamilyStoneAftertheshow,MrSullivancomplimentedandthankedeachofusbutIwasthinkingaboutwhathehadsaidtomebeforetheshowIhadbeenwanderingaroundbackstage,likethekidinthePepsicommercial,andranintoMrSullivanHeseemedgladtoseemeandshookmyhand,butbeforeheletitgohehadaspecialmessageformeItwas,ayearwhensomeofthebestpeopleinrockwerelosingtheirlivestodrugsandalcoholAnolder,wisergenerationinshowbusinesswasunpreparedtoloseitsveryyoungSomepeoplehadalreadysaidthatIremindedthemofFrankieLymon,agreatyoungsingeroftheswholosthislifethatwayEdSullivanmayhavebeenthinkingofallthiswhenhetoldme,"Neverforgetwhereyourtalentcamefrom,thatyourtalentisagiftfromGod"Iwasgratefulforhiskindness,butIcouldhavetoldhimthatmymotherhadneverletmeforgetIneverhadpolio,whichisafrighteningthingforadancertothinkabout,butIknewGodhadtestedmeandmybrothersandsistersinotherwaysourlargefamily,ourtinyhouse,thesmallamountofmoneywehadtomakeendsmeet,eventhejealouskidsintheneighborhoodwhothrewrocksatourwindowswhilewerehearsed,yellingthatwe'dnevermakeitWhenIthinkofmymotherandourearlyyears,IcantellyoutherearerewardsthatgofarbeyondmoneyandpublicacclaimandawardsMymotherwasagreatproviderIfshefoundoutthatoneofushadaninterestinsomething,shewouldencourageitiftherewasanypossiblewayIfIdevelopedaninterestinmoviestars,forinstance,she'dcomehomewithanarmfulofbooksaboutfamousstarsEvenwithninechildrenshetreatedeachofuslikeanonlychildThereisn'toneofuswho'severforgottenwhatahardworkerandgreatprovidershewasIt'sanoldstoryEverychildthinkstheirmotheristhegreatestmotherintheworld,butweJacksonsneverlostthatfeelingBecauseofKatherine'sgentleness,warmth,andattention,Ican'timaginewhatitmustbeliketogrowupwithoutamother'sloveOnethingIknowaboutchildrenisthatiftheydon'tgetthelovetheyneedfromtheirparents,they'llgetitfromsomeoneelseandclingtothatperson,agrandparent,anyoneWeneverhadtolookforanyoneelsewithmymotheraroundThelessonsshetaughtuswereinvaluableKindness,love,andconsiderationforotherpeopleheadedherlistDon'thurtpeopleNeverbegNeverfreeloadThoseweresinsatourhouseShealwayswantedustogive,butsheneverwantedustoaskorbegThat'sthewaysheisIrememberagoodstoryaboutmymotherthatillustrateshernatureOneday,backinGary,whenIwasreallittle,thismanknockedoneverybody'sdoorearlyinthemorningHewasbleedingsobadlyyoucouldseewherehe'dbeenaroundtheneighborhoodNoonewouldlethiminFinallyhegottoourdoorandhestartedbangingandknockingMotherlethiminatonceNow,mostpeoplewouldhavebeentooafraidtodothat,butthat'smymotherIcanrememberwakingupandfindingbloodonourfloorIwishwecouldallbemorelikeMumTheearliestmemoriesIhaveofmyfatherareofhimcominghomefromthesteelmillwithabigbagofglazeddoughnutsforallofusMybrothersandIcouldreallyeatbackthenandthatbagwoulddisappearwithasnapofthefingersHeusedtotakeusalltothemerrygoroundinthepark,butIwassoyoungIdon'trememberthatverywellMyfatherhasalwaysbeensomethingofamysterytomeandheknowsitOneofthefewthingsIregretmostisneverbeingabletohavearealclosenesswithhimHebuiltashellaroundhimselfovertheyearsand,oncehestoppedtalkingaboutourfamilybusiness,hefoundithardtorelatetousWe'dallbetogetherandhe'djustleavetheroomEventodayit'shardforhimtotouchonfatherandsonstuffbecausehe'stooembarrassedWhenIseethatheis,Ibecomeembarrassed,tooMyfatherdidalwaysprotectusandthat'snosmallfeatHealwaystriedtomakesurepeopledidn'tcheatusHelookedafterourinterestsinthebestwaysHemighthavemadeafewmistakesalongtheway,buthealwaysthoughthewasdoingwhatwasrightforhisfamilyAnd,ofcourse,mostofwhatmyfatherhelpedusaccomplishwaswonderfulandunique,especiallyinregardtoourrelationshipswithcompaniesandpeopleinthebusinessI'dsaywewereamongafortunatefewartistswhowalkedawayfromachildhoodinthebusinesswithanythingsubstantialmoney,realestate,otherinvestmentsMyfathersetalltheseupforusHelookedoutforbothourinterestsandhisTothisdayI'msothankfulhedidn'ttrytotakeallourmoneyforhimselfthewaysomanyparentsofchildstarshaveImaginestealingfromyourownchildrenMyfatherneverdidanythinglikethatButIstilldon'tknowhim,andthat'ssadforasonwhohungerstounderstandhisownfatherHe'sstillamysterymantomeandhemayalwaysbeoneWhatIgotfrommyfatherwasn'tnecessarilyGodgiven,thoughtheBiblesaysyoureapwhatyousowWhenwewerecomingalong,Dadsaidthatinadifferentway,butthemessagewasjustasclear:Youcouldhaveallthetalentintheworld,butifyoudidn'tprepareandplan,itwouldn'tdoyouanygoodJoeJacksonhadalwayslovedsingingandmusicasmuchasmymotherdid,buthealsoknewtherewasaworldbeyondJacksonStreetIwasn'toldenoughtorememberhisband,theFalcons,buttheycameovertoourhousetorehearseonweekendsThemusictookthemawayfromtheirjobsatthesteelmill,whereDaddroveacraneTheFalconswouldplayallovertown,andinclubsandcollegesaroundnorthernIndianaandChicagoAttherehearsalsatourhouse,DadwouldbringhisguitaroutoftheclosetandplugitintotheamphekeptinthebasementHe'dalwayslovedrhythmandbluesandthatguitarwashisprideandjoyTheclosetwheretheguitarwaskeptwasconsideredanalmostsacredplaceNeedlesstosay,itwasofflimitstouskidsDaddidn'tgotoKingdomHallwithus,butbothMomandDadknewthatmusicwasawayofkeepingourfamilytogetherinaneighborhoodwheregangsrecruitedkidsmybrothers'agesThethreeoldestboyswouldalwayshaveanexcusetoaroundwhentheFalconscameoverDadletthemthinktheywerebeinggivenaspecialtreatbybeingallowedtolisten,buthewasactuallyeagertohavethemthereTitowatchedeverythingthatwasgoingonwiththegreatestinterestHe'dtakensaxophoneinschool,buthecouldtellhishandswerebigenoughtograbthechordsandsliptheriffsthatmyfatherplayedItmadesensethathe'dcatchon,becauseTitolookedsomuchlikemyfatherthatweallexpectedhimtoshareDad'stalentsTheextentoftheresemblancewasscaryashegotolderMaybemyfathernoticedTito'szealbecausehelaiddownrulesforallmybrothers:NoonewastotouchtheguitarwhilehewasoutPeriodTherefore,Jackie,Tito,andJermainewerecarefultoseethatMomwasinthekitchenwhenthey"borrowed"theguitarTheywerealsocarefulnottomakeanynoisewhileremovingitTheywouldthengobacktoourroomandputontheradioorthelittleportablerecordplayersotheycouldplayalongTitowouldhoisttheguitarontohisbellyashesatonthebedandpropitupHetookturnswithJackieandJermaine,andthey'dalltrythescalestheywerelearninginschoolaswellastrytofigureouthowtogetthe"GreenOnions"partthey'dhearontheradioBynowIwasoldenoughtosneakinandwatchifIpromisednottotellOnedayMomfinallycaughtthem,andwewereallworriedShescoldedtheboys,butsaidshewouldn'ttellDadaslongaswewerecarefulSheknewthatguitarwaskeepingthemfromrunningwithabadcrowdandmaybegettingbeatup,soshewasn'tabouttotakeawayanythingthatkeptthemwithinarm'sreachOfcourse,somethinghadtogivesoonerorlater,andonedayastringbrokeMybrotherspanickedTherewasn'ttimetogetitrepairedbeforeDadcamehome,andbesides,noneifusknewhowtogoaboutgettingitfixedMybrothersneverfiguredoutwhattodo,sotheyputtheguitarbackintheclosetandhopedferventlythatmyfatherwouldthinkitbrokebyitselfOfcourse,Daddidn'tbuythat,andhewasfuriousMysisterstoldmetostayoutofitandkeepalowprofileIheardTitocryingafterDadfoundoutandIwenttoinvestigate,ofcourseTitowasonhisbedcryingwhenDadcamebackandmotionedforhimtogetupTitowasscared,butmyfatherjuststoodthere,holdinghisfavoriteguitarHegaveTitoahard,penetratinglookandsaid,"Letmeseewhatyoucando"MybrotherpulledhimselftogetherandstartedtoplayafewrunshehadtaughthimselfWhenmyfathersawhowwellTitocouldplay,heknewhe'dobviouslybeenpracticingandherealizedthatTitoandtherestofusdidn'ttreathisfavoriteguitarasifitwereatoyItbecamecleartohimthatwhathadhappenedhadbeenonlyanaccidentAtthispointmymothersteppedinandvoicedherenthusiasmforourmusicalabilityShetoldhimthatweboyshadtalentandheshouldlistentousShekeptpushingforus,soonedayhebegantolistenandhelikedwhatheheardTito,Jackie,andJermainestartedrehearsingtogetherinearnestAcoupleofyearslater,whenIwasaboutfive,MompointedouttomyfatherthatIwasagoodsingerandcouldplaythebongosIbecameamemberofthegroupAboutthenmyfatherdecidedthatwhatwashappeninginhisfamilywasseriousGraduallyhebeganspendinglesstimewiththeFalconsandmorewithusWe'djustwoodshedtogetherandhe'dgiveussometipsandteachustechniquesontheguitarMarlonandIweren'toldenoughtoplay,butwe'dwatchwhenmyfatherrehearsedtheolderboysandwewerelearningwhenwewatchedThebanonusingDad'sguitarstillheldwhenhewasn'taround,butmybrotherslovedusingitwhentheycouldThehouseonJacksonStreetwasburstingwithmusicDadandMomhadpaidformusiclessonsforRebbieandJackiewhentheywerelittlekids,sotheyhadagoodbackgroundTherestofushadmusicclassandbandintheGaryschools,butnoamountofpracticewasenoughtoharnessallthatenergyTheFalconswerestillearningmoney,howeverinfrequenttheirgigs,andthatextramoneywasimportanttousItwasenoughtokeepfoodonthetableforagrowingfamilybutnotenoughtogiveusthingsthatweren'tnecessaryMomwasworkingparttimeatSears,Dadwasstillworkingthemilljob,andnoonewasgoinghungry,butIthink,lookingback,thatthingsmusthaveseemedonebigdeadendOnedayDadwaslatecominghomeandMombegantogetworriedBythetimehearrived,shewasreadytogivehimapieceofhermind,somethingweboysdidn'tmindwitnessingonceinawhilejusttoseeifhecouldtakeitlikehedisheditout,butwhenhepokedhisheadthroughthedoor,hehadamischievouslookonhisfaceandhewashidingsomethingbehindhisbackWewereallshockedwhenheproducedagleamingredguitar,slightlysmallerthantheoneintheclosetWewereallhopingthismeantwe'dgettheoldoneButDadsaidthenewguitarwasTito'sWegatheredaroundtoadmireit,whileDadtoldTitohehadtoshareitwithanyonewhowouldpracticeWewerenottotakeittoschooltoshowitoffThiswasaseriouspresentandthatdaywasamomentousoccasionfortheJacksonfamilyMomwashappyforus,butshealsoknewherhusban
