betweentheglobalandthelocal–whichseemsinfacttobethedominantpositiontoday–butrathertodevelopaviewonhowthelocalisconstructedorassembledinthisglobalinscopespaceThelocal,intheviewwebegintodevelop,isnotagiven,itisaneffect–andonethatweasurbandesignershaveitinourpowertoinfluence:toconstruct,deconstructandreconstructthroughthemanipulationofaglobalinscopefieldBecauseweareurbandesigners,wetryalsotoconstructdiagrammaticreductionsofthisspaceinordertounderstandhowwemaymanipulateitWelookforinstrumentswhichhelpustracethedrifts,shiftsandtendenciesgeneratedoutofthefluidprocessesofaglobalinscopeurban–equivalent,thoughoppositeineffectofcourse,todiagrammaticinstrumentsusedinthepasttofreezeourbuiltenvironmentintoastaticantiurbanorderinthenamesof‘neighborhood’and‘community’Weseekourneighborhoodandcommunitynotinapartitioningoftheurbanlandscape,butratherinthewayplacesareconstructedasmeaningfulandsocialthroughthewaytheyfigurein,andcoordinate,theperformanceofmultipleworldslivedwithinmultiplescales,networksandhorizonsinurbanspaceThelocalbecomesinfactsomethingotherthanpurelysingularorpurelymultipleItbecomesoneofthosefractionalrealities–morethanoneandlessthanmany–introducedhereinchapterTowardsanUrbanSpaceStephenReadintroductiondoneinddintroductiondoneindd::::SeeingtheurbanseeingintheurbanDavidHumeconstitutedamultifariousworldofexperiencebasedupontheprincipleoftheexteriorityofrelationsWestartwithatomicparts,buttheseatomicpartshavetransitions,passages,'tendencies',whichcirculatefromonetoanotherThesetendenciesgiverisetohabitsIsn'tthistheanswertothequestion"whatarewe"Wearehabits,nothingbuthabits–thehabitofsaying"I"PerhapsthereisnomorestrikinganswertotheproblemoftheSelfGillesDeleuze()ItsometimesseemstousthatitisnotsomuchourcitiesthatareincrisisasourimagesandimaginariesoftheurbanAtaveryinstrumentallevelthingsgoon:thetechnicalitiesandpoliticsofcitybuildingarecarriedout,citiesarebeingbuiltatoftenexplosiveratesallovertheworld–butweclearlyhavedifficultiesseeingclearlyandrecognizingtheproductsofallthiswidelydistributedeffortAndit'snotasifwedon'thaveanimageofthecityinfact,theimageofthecitywecarrywithuscanbestrikinglyclear,asifburntintosomekindofvaguebutinsistentcollectivelongingordisposition–onlyit'sanimageofacitythatisn'tclearlyours!Thisimagecanbepreciseabouthowthecityshouldbeandwhatweexpectittodo,butthisprecisiondoesn'ttranslateinanyclearwayintostrategiesformakingitthatway–infactthosestrategieswhichclaimtodeliverourdesireforcommunityandapublicofbelongingusuallyendupproducinggrotesqueparodiesofthesequalities,inmanipulativecommercialstagings,orbywayofagrossandcynicallyexpedientexclusionMeanwhilecitybuildinggoesonatpace,withoutawidespreadcriticalreflectiononwhatitiswearebuildingThisisnothelpedbythefactthatacriticaldiscussionisnotingeneralpromotedcitybuildingispronetohighpoweredandselfcongratulatorydeclamationsofitsownsuccesses,tiedasitistoapoliticsthathastoassembleresourcesandpopularandcommercialendorsement,andtiedasittoooftenistotheserviceofpoliticalambitionProjectsbegetprojectsinroundsofcompetitiveglobalpositioninginwhicharchitecturalbrandingandglossyaccountsofsuccessunderwriteescalationsinimagewarsofboosterismGrandioseprojectsestablishspectaclesonagloballevelinthenameofurbanrenewal,withoutachievingthelongtermlocalspinoffthehypealwayspromisesWecan,itseems,orchestrateandmanagehugeurbanstatementsandstagings,tiedtonationalimagingprogramsandglobalevents,butwefinditdifficulttosustainacontinuousproductionofordinaryurbanplacesthatsettleintoandenrichthelivesanddoingsofordinarypeopleWefinditdifficulttoproduceanordinaryurbanism,capableofsupportingordinaryeverydaylivesaswellasengenderingnewlifepatternsandlivelihoodsinthewaysurbanenvironmentsdidatmanypointsinourpastInfactitsometimesseemswehavegivenuponthishope,distainingavisionofasustainingandnegotiatedsocialplaceasromanticinthesefastandconnectedtimes,andrubbishingasnaiveandmystical,afaithinthecreativeandsustainingpowerofoverlaidwebsofcopresentsocialityandanurbanofcopresenceandcovisibilityThebureaucraticand'practical'alternativetothisvisionofadistributednegotiatedsocialityintheeverydayisaregimeofatomization,regulation,rationalizationandcontrol,whichassumesmiddleclasssensibilitiesandpowersandintowhichthebulkoftheworld'spopulationisunabletobe,andresistsbeing,shoehornedOnecouldcertainlymakeacasethatthisregime,initsattempttogathereverythingunderitsuniversalizingvision,tosomeextentcreatestheclimateof'risk'weliveundertodayThisregimeclearlyfailstoadequatelyaccountforandrecognizeeitherthemarginalorthenovel,andisitselftodayunderpressurefromtheenergiesStephenReadintroductiondoneinddintroductiondoneindd::::andforcesofanincreasinglycomplexanddynamicworldNordoesitrecognizethecorporealofthesocial(political)bodyoritsneedforvisibilityandanimageofitselfAttemptstothinkamoreopenandnegotiableandresponsiveframeforsocialurbanlivingcanquiteclearlyneverignorethechangesbroughttocontemporarysocietiesbymodernity,butwewouldarguethatrealplacesandspaceshavealwayshadacapacityforopenness,presentationandresponsiveness,andhavealwaysbeencapableofaccommodatingandevengeneratingacertain'excess'ofmarginalityandnoveltyWewouldarguethatthiscapacityand'excess'canbeseenasapossiblecharacterofthelocalinitsrelationtoawiderworldandthattheurbanbecomesaframewhichneedstobeexploredfurtherforthewayitmayengenderaplacethatisconnectedandaccommodatingatoneandthesametime,andgroundingofthesocialbodyThiswouldbeaplacethatiswhatwewoulddescribeassocial,thatisalsopoliticalinthewayAristotleusestheterm,andinsertedintotherealurbanspacesoftodayandtomorrowOurultimategoalmustbeanemplacementofapoliticofthehumancommunityintheconnectivespacesofourcontemporaryworldTheurbanistodayoftencharacterizedasaplaceofdisintegration,segregationandviolence–butitisalsobuiltaccordingtoatechnocraticrationalitywhichdividesinordertocontrolMeanwhile,someofthebestplacesofourcitiesarealsocharacterizedbyadiversity,connectednessandopennesswhichgeneratesenliveningspacesandsociallylubricatingjuxtapositionsofdissimilarsThesespacesareoftenasourceofnoveltyandstimulation,challengingfixitiesofideasanddisposition,andprovidingananchorforalternativeperformancesoflives,livelihoodsandidentitiesItisyetpossible,wefeel,thatanurbansituation,embeddedindynamiccontemporaryprocesses,maysignalpathwaystosustainingandsustainableandopensocialfuturesIfwelookbackattheoriginsofmanyofoursocialandpoliticalinstitutions,theseareinseparablefromalifeassembledinurbansettings–thesesettingsthemselvesclearlysomuchmorethanneutralbackdropstoformsofsocialandpoliticalbeingAndwecannotclaimthatthiswastrueonlyatthepointoforiginoftheseinstitutions,whicharenowfixedandimmutableweseesocialformsbeingchangedtodayinnewmodesofcommunication,intersubjectivityandsocialidentificationItisnotourintentioninthisbooktodenythedistancebetweenourlivestodayandthoseofthepast,nortoproposeareturntoacommunitylockedintolocalplacebutwedowishtobeginanexplorationintothewaysaconcreteandconnectiveurbanenvironmentcansupportlivesandlivelihoodssustainedinwebsofintersubjectivityandinteridentificationWewishtoexplorethewaylivesinlocalplacedependalsoonaconnectiveengagementwiththeworld–anditsconflictsanddifferences–fortheirviabilityandforconditionsofenablementandevenjusticeAsIwritethisintheautumnof,thesuburbsofParisandLilleandLyonareburningEveryoneknowsthattheangerspillingoutintothestreetsofthesemeanandisolatedsocialholdingenclosureshavetodowithissuesofopportunityanditsdenialEveryoneknowsthattheimportantchoicestobemadearepoliticalandlegislativeandtodowithchangingaregimeofaccessandenablementinasocietywhichhasneglectedtonoticethewayconduitsofaccesshavefailedtobeextendedbeyondestablishednetworksofprivilegeandpowerButthereisalsoanotherkindofpoliticsinvolved:theissueisasmuchaboutthewaylivesarerecognizedandrepresented–honoredandpresentedinpositiveandaffirmingways–inthespacesofoursocietiesandcitiesItisperhapsthereforenotjustamatteroftherealizationandenactmentofopportunityandofjustaccesstothebenefitsofsociety,thoughthisisrightlythefirstconcernitisalsoaboutthewaypeoplesarerecognizedandrepresentedinthespacesofthatsocietyItisperhapsnotanaccidentTowardsanUrbanSpaceintroductiondoneinddintroductiondoneindd::::thatthecitythathasmostescapedthecurrentroundofangerandviolenceisMarseilles–alsothemajorFrenchcitywhereethnicminoritiesandtheirculturesaremostpositivelyvisibleFromtheAgoratothecontemporaryurbanPatrickHealytakesusbacktotheassemblyofapoliticsofourbeingtogether,andofourtalking(ofit),intheancientAgoraHeshowsusthattheAgoraisanimprovisedplacewhere"onecouldbeagorazontaatthesiteofflows,ofpeople,commoditiesandinformation"Thecitybecomes"aplaceofchatter"and"animbrogliointherhetoricofitsownnameandnaming"IncontradictiontoMumford,hereisnosystemwithinternalcoherence,"norisitasocialspatialconglomeratewithitsowninternalcoherenceembodied,itiseverybody'sbusinesstokoinon,or,ResPublica"Theconcept'koinonia'('society'or'community')isusedtodenoteanyformofassociationofhumanbeings,thecrewofaship,abandofsoldiers,anassociationoftradesmen,andstressespeopleandagovernmentofthedemosaboveterritoryInfactcommunityisaresultoftalkingbeforeitisanybelongingtodemeorclan,certainlybeforeanybloodbondtoterritory,andtheAgoraisthe"placeofrecognition"wherethetermsofsuchbelongingareconstructedandnegotiatedandwherethepresenceofstrangerssaltthefellowshipofcommunityAllkoinoniasaresubjecttotheallcomprehensivepolitikekoinonia,whichisthepolisTheconceptofcommunityisthereforeoneofthemostsignificantconnotationsofpolisandHealybeginstoshowhowtokoinonandpolisaremanifestedinaspaceofpresentationandrepresentation,andhowspacecanbeaprimarydiagnosticforthesocialHealyposesthepossibilityofamaterial'physiology'ofthecityinagorazontainanecologyofpresence,inthepresenceofothersandinexchangeofideas,desiresandthingsThecityisathingofcirculationandcommunicationwhosetendenciesgiverisetohabitsWeneed,hesuggests,toconsidercarefullywhatthe'res'ofResPublicameans:theproblemofthethingnessofresmakesofthecityafalseobject,thingsthrowntogetherratherthanunderstoodasthegatheringandscatteringinteractivitiesofdynamicandkaleidoscopicprocessesTheobjectnessofthecityneedstobedissolved,openin
