isoftheSuwenisalayeroftextswrittenbeginninginthesecondorfirstcenturybc,withsomeofitsconceptualcontentspossiblydatingfromthethirdcenturybcPresumablyinthefirstorsecondcenturyad,severalcompilersorteamsofauthors,allunknowntoustoday,setouttobringtogetherdisparatetextsofpreviousdecades,therebygeneratingasecondtextuallayer,towhichwereaddedfurtherlayersinsubsequentcenturiesTheoutcomesofthesemoreorlesscontemporaryeffortstocombineaselectionofstatementsandtextsfromanidenticalpoolofwritingsbynumerouspreviousauthorsinoneauthoritativecompilationhavecomedowntousinfourmajorworks:inadditiontotheSuwenandtheLingshu,theNanjingandtheHuangDineijingtaisu(Taisu)AlthoughtheSuwencorpushassofarescapedallattemptsatreconstruction,scholarsagreethatitwassubjectedtosignificantrearrangements,emendations,andadditionsinpostHancenturies,culminatinginthecontributionsbyWangBingintheeighthcenturyTheImperialEditorialOfficeoftheeleventhcenturydecidedtointroduceonlyminoreditorialchanges,sothatthecorpusavailabletodayessentiallyreflectsthetextthatexistedtwelvehundredyearsagoixUnschuld,HuangDineijing:PMPageixHencetheimportanceoftheSuwenasasourceofancientChineseintellectualhistoryliesinitsformativeperiodofaboutonethousandyearsitoffersinvaluabledataoncognitivedynamicsinancientChinesemedicineandknowledgeofnatureReadingtheSuwennotonlyincreasesourunderstandingoftherootsofChinesemedicineasanintegralaspectofChinesecivilizationItalsoprovidesamuchneededstartingpointforseriousandwellinformeddiscussionsondifferencesandparallelsbetweenEuropeanandChineseapproachestoexistentialthreatssuchasillnessandtheriskofearlydeathSuchdiscussionsareessentialtoanappreciationoftheculturalconstructofillnessandhealthinChineseintellectualtraditionstheyappearnecessaryinviewofcurrentpoliticalattemptstostructurethecoexistenceofChineseandWesternmedicineeitherascompetingorascomplementarypathsintheunendingquestforhumanhealthNature,Knowledge,ImageryinanAncientChineseMedicalTextisthefirstinamultivolumepublicationoftheresultsoftheSuwenproject,whichwascarriedoutwithinternationalcooperationattheInstitutefortheHistoryofMedicineofMunichUniversityThescopeoftheprojectwasbroadItaimedatpreparingthefirstcomplete,philologicallysoundEnglishtranslationoftheSuwentogetherwitharesearchapparatusthatwillbeofhelpforfutureworkonthistextIpreparedapreliminaryversionofthetranslationtoserveasastartingpointforanextensivecollaborationwithHermannTessenowHisphilologicalexpertisecontributeddecisivelytotheresultachieved,whichwillbepublishedseparatelyinthreevolumesInaddition,TessenowhasconductedadetailedanalysisoftheapproximatelythreehundredfiftyseparatesegmentsconstitutingthehistoricalandstructurallayersoftheSuwenTheoutcomeofthisstudyalsowillbepublishedinseveralvolumesBecausewehavespentsomuchtimewiththeSuwen,wehavecometorealizetheenormouscomplexityofitscontentsThereisnodoubtthatjustaswehaveadjustedourinterpretationofmanypassagestoaneverprogressingunderstandingofthetext,knowledgablereaderswilltakeissuewiththeresultanddiscovererrorsthatweoverlookedNevertheless,webelievethatthistranslationrepresentsalevelofunderstandingthatmaybeconsideredasubstantialcontributiontoawellinformeddiscussionoftheSuwenasoneoftheseminaldocumentsofancientChinesecultureInmyattemptstopenetratetheChinesetextanditshistoricalcontext,IhavegreatlybenefitedfromChineseandJapanesescholarshipofpreviousdecadesandcenturiesThepublicationofannotatedbibliographiesofmorethanthreethousandarticlesbyChineseauthorsofthetwentiethcentury,aswellasofmorethansixhundredmonographsbyChineseandJapaneseauthorsofpastcenturies,willdocumentthesecondarysourcesIhaveusedWhileourinterpretationoftheoriginalisreflectedintheEnglishversion,xprefatoryremarksUnschuld,HuangDineijing:PMPagexIhavetakengreatcaretoquoteasmanyconsentinganddissentingChineseandJapaneseviewsaswasfeasibleZhengJinshengoftheResearchInstituteofMedicalHistoryandMedicalLiteratureoftheChinaAcademyofTraditionalChineseMedicinehasstayedwithusinMunichseveraltimesforextendedperiodsHewasofinvaluablehelpinthecompilationoftheannotatedbibliographiesandofthesurveyofthedoctrineofthefiveperiodsandsixqi,publishedasanappendixtothisvolumeHealsodiscussedwithmethetranslationofdiscoursesthroughandofferedwelcomecommentsIntheearlyphaseoftheproject,whenPCsandelectronicwordprocessinghadjustbeguntoplayaroleinourwork,RupprechtMayersupplieduswithelectronicversionsoftheSuwen,Lingshu,andTaisuand,inadditiontowritingseveralsearchprograms,designedthesoftwarerequiredtocompiletheconcordancesalsotobepublishedaspartofthisprojectOvertheyears,wereceivedvaluablesupportandtechnicalassistancefromthefollowingcolleagueswhosecooperationisgratefullyacknowledged:CuiZhenhua,DonaldHarper,UrsulaHoller,ChristineHu,FriederKleemann,AlexanderKossarev,JürgenKovacs,FranzJosefMaaßen,BernhardSander,ChristianSchütz,ReinhardVonthein,YüHong,andZhangTongjunTheviewsIexpressinthisvolumearebasedonthetranslationoftheSuwenandonitsstructuralcontentanalysisItsfirst,mainpartisanintroductiontothemeaningoftheclassicaltreatisesoftheSuwenasitwastransmittedbeforetheTangera,thatis,treatisesSuwe
