Submission of Manuscripts
Manuscripts must be submitted via the secure manuscript submission Web site. Galley proofs are
also available from a secure Web site. These instructions must be followed when submitting
manuscripts. Further information regarding publication can be found at http://pubs.acs.org.
Select “Publications A–Z”, choose this Journal, and then select “Submission and Review”.
Web Submission
Manuscripts must be submitted via the ACS Paragon Plus Environment
(http://paragonplus.acs.org/login). To begin a manuscript submission, select “Submit a
Manuscript or Review” under the “Submission and Review” tab on the Journal Home Page,
http://pubs.acs.org/JCED. Registering/logging in will take you to your own ACS Paragon Plus
Home Page, where you can submit and track the progress of your submission. You will be
required to select the manuscript type [see the Scope and Editorial Policy
(http://pubs.acs.org/paragonplus/submission/jceaax/jceaax_scope.pdf)], provide the names,
addresses, and e-mail addresses of all authors, and provide a list of four individuals (with their e-
mail addresses) that you consider the Editors could approach to provide a peer review of your
manuscript. The reviewers recommended should not be exclusively those well-known in the field
that would be an obvious choice of the Editors, none can be from your own institution, not more
than two can be from the country in which the work was conducted, and they should not include
collaborators or former mentors or mentees. The manuscript should preferably be in a single
word processing file with embedded graphics. Alternatively, graphics files can be separately
uploaded by choosing File Designation: “Graphic for manuscript”. These will be combined with
the manuscript during the creation of the PDF proof file. Authors can also upload their own .pdf
file. During submission, authors are required to inform the Editor of related manuscripts that the
authors have under consideration or in press in this or any other Journal. Copies of those
manuscripts should be submitted as “Supporting Information for Review Only” and the
relationships of such manuscripts to the one submitted indicated. During the submission process,
authors must confirm that they have read and understand the ACS Ethical Guidelines
(http://pubs.acs.org/ethics), that a detailed literature search has been made, and that the results
reported have been compared with published data. Finally, authors must approve the PDF
version of their manuscripts prior to formal submission. Complete instructions, including
information on which platforms and word processing packages are supported, and an overview
of the electronic online (Web) submission process are available through the secure ACS Paragon
Plus Web site. The Web submission site employs state-of-the-art security mechanisms to ensure
that all electronically submitted manuscripts are secure. These same security mechanisms are
also utilized throughout the peer review process, permitting access to only those Editors and
reviewers assigned to a particular manuscript. Authors must also submit all revisions of
manuscripts through their own ACS Paragon Plus Home Page. Authors will be sent an e-mail
acknowledging receipt of the manuscript. For additional information and assistance, visit
http://pubs.acs.org/page/4authors/submission/index.html.
Plagiarism
Plagiarism is not acceptable in ACS journals. ACS journals adhere to the U.S. National Science
Foundation definition of plagiarism as “the appropriation of another person’s ideas, processes,
results, or words without giving appropriate credit” (45 Code of Federal Regulations, Section
689.1). Authors should not engage in plagiarism, which is verbatim or near-verbatim copying, or
very close paraphrasing, of text or results from another’s work. Authors should not engage in
self-plagiarism (also known as duplicate publication), which is unacceptably close replication of
the author’s own previously published text or results without acknowledgement of the source.
ACS applies a “reasonable person” standard when deciding whether a submission constitutes
duplicate publication. If one or two identical sentences previously published by an author appear
in a subsequent work by the same author, this is unlikely to be regarded as duplicate publication.
Material quoted verbatim from the author’s previously published work must be placed in
quotation marks. In contrast, it is unacceptable for an author to include significant verbatim or
near-verbatim portions of his/her own work, or to depict his/her previously published results or
methodology as new, without acknowledging the source. [This statement from the ACS Ethical
Guidelines was modeled with permission from Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics:
Authorial Integrity in Scientific Publication (http://www.siam.org/books/plagiarism.php).]
Engaging in plagiarism or self-plagiarism (or any other infractions of the ACS Ethical
Guidelines) may result in the application of sanctions by the Editor-in-Chief, including but not
limited to the suspension or revocation of publishing privileges.
Cover Letter
All submissions must include a cover letter including the telephone and fax numbers and e-mail
address of the corresponding author. In the cover letter you must indicate whether the manuscript
is for a special issue such as a topical issue or festschrift.
Patent Activities and Intellectual Property Issues
Authors are responsible for ensuring that all patent activities and intellectual property issues are
satisfactorily resolved prior to first publication (ASAP or in issue). Acceptance and publication will
not be delayed for pending or unresolved issues of this nature.
Conflict of Interest Disclosure
A statement describing any financial conflicts of interest or lack thereof is published with each
manuscript. During the submission process, the corresponding author must provide this
statement on behalf of all authors of the manuscript. The statement should describe all potential
sources of bias (including affiliations, funding sources, and financial or management
relationships) that may constitute conflicts of interest (see the ACS Ethical Guidelines). The
statement will be published in the final article. If no conflict of interest is declared, the following
statement will be published in the article: “The authors declare no competing financial interest.”
Journal Publishing Agreement
A properly completed and signed Journal Publishing Agreement must be submitted for each
manuscript. ACS Paragon Plus provides an electronic version of the Agreement that will be
available on the My Authoring Activity tab of the corresponding author's home page once the
manuscript has been assigned to an Editor. A PDF version of the Agreement is also available, but
authors are strongly encouraged to use the electronic Journal Publishing Agreement. If the
PDF version is used, all pages of the signed PDF Agreement must be submitted. If the
corresponding author cannot or should not complete either the electronic or PDF version for any
reason, another author should complete and sign the PDF version of the form. Forms and
complete instructions are available at http://pubs.acs.org/page/copyright/journals/index.html.
Page Charges
There are no page charges for the Journal of Chemical & Engineering Data.
Proofs
The corresponding author of an accepted manuscript will receive e-mail notification and
complete instructions when page proofs are available for review via a secure Web site.
Routine rephrasing of sentences or additions are not permitted at the page proof stage.
Alterations should be restricted to serious changes in interpretation or corrections of data.
Extensive or important changes on page proofs, including changes to the title or list of authors,
are subject to editorial review.
It is the responsibility of the corresponding author to ensure that all authors listed on the
manuscript agree with the changes made on the proofs. Galley proofs should be returned within
48 h of receipt in order to ensure timely publication of the manuscript.
Correspondence regarding accepted papers and proofs should be directed to Journal Publications,
American Chemical Society (e-mail: acsproof@acs.org).
Publication Date
Documents accepted for publication in ACS journals will be published as “Articles ASAP” on
the Web site as soon as they are ready for publication, that is, when galley proofs are corrected
and all author concerns are resolved. Publication on the Web usually occurs within 2 to 4 weeks
after the manuscript is accepted (and about 4 working days of receipt of page proof corrections),
and this can be anywhere from 2 to 6 weeks in advance of the cover date of the issue.
Manuscripts assigned to a special issue often remain published ASAP for several months. The
actual date on which an accepted paper is published on the Web is recorded on the Web version
of the manuscript and on the first page of the PDF version.
ACS Policies for E-prints and Reprints
Under the ACS Articles on Request policy, the Society will provide (free of charge) to all
contributing authors a unique URL within the ACS Web site that they may e-mail to colleagues
or post on external Web sites. These author-directed links are designed to facilitate distribution
of an author’s published work to interested colleagues. The ACS Articles on Request policy
allows 50 downloads within the first year after Web publication and unlimited access via the
same author-directed links 12 months after Web publication.
The ACS AuthorChoice option establishes a fee-based mechanism for authors or their research
funding agencies to sponsor the open availability of their articles on the Web at the time of
online publication. Under this policy, the ACS as copyright holder will enable unrestricted Web
access to a contributing author’s publication from the Society’s Web site in exchange for a fixed
payment from the sponsoring author. ACS AuthorChoice will also enable participating authors to
post electronic copies of published articles on their own personal Web sites and institutional
repositories for noncommercial scholarly purposes and allow immediate open access to an article
as soon as it is published on the ACS Web site. For more details on ACS AuthorChoice, please
visit http://pubs.acs.org/page/policy/authorchoice/index.html.
When the proof of their paper has been sent, authors will receive a link to a website where they
may order author reprints. They may also call Cierant Corporation at 866-305-0111 from 9 a.m.
to 5 p.m. EST. Reprints will be shipped within two weeks after the issue publication date.
Neither the Editors nor the Washington ACS Office keeps a supply of reprints; requests for
single copies of papers should be addressed to the corresponding author of the paper concerned.
Preparation of Manuscripts
The following brief manuscript preparation guide is given to assist authors in submitting
manuscripts. Manuscripts should be single column, 1.5 spaced, with tables and figures at the end
of the manuscript. Figure captions should be included with the figures. All pages must be
numbered consecutively. All files must be saved with U.S. Letter page size (in the Page Setup
settings of the word-processing application) before conversion to PDF format and submission via
Paragon Plus. Authors should consult recent issues of the Journal and The ACS Style Guide, 3rd
ed. (American Chemical Society: Washington, DC, 2006) for further format guidance. The ACS
Style Guide is available from Oxford University Press (http://www.oup-usa.org, ISBN 0-8412-
3999-1 in the search field ISBN). All characters must be correctly represented throughout the
manuscript: for example, 1 (one) and l (ell), 0 (zero) and O (oh), and x (ex) and × (times sign).
The “Symbol” font for all Greek letters and math symbols should be used.
Table of Contents Graphic
A Table of Contents (TOC) graphic is required for all manuscripts upon submission. This
graphic will also be used for the graphical abstract both in the published article and on the ACS
mobile application. It may also be chosen as part of the cover art collage for the issue in which
the article appears. The TOC graphic should capture the reader’s attention and, in conjunction
with the manuscript title, give the reader a quick visual impression of the essence of the
manuscript. The TOC graphic should be in the form of a structure, graph, drawing, image or
micrograph, or reaction scheme. It should be a distinct graphic, not identical to one of the figures
from the article. Tables or spectra are not acceptable. Color is encouraged and is free of charge.
The author should submit a graphic in the actual size to be used for the TOC that will fit in an
area that is 4 cm high and 8 cm wide. Larger images will be reduced to fit within those
dimensions. Type size of labels, formulas, or numbers within the graphic must be legible. The
graphic should be labeled “for Table of Contents use only” and contain the title and authors of
the manuscript. If the manuscript submission template is not used, this item should be appended
as the last page of the manuscript.
Title
Use a specific rather than a general title. The title should be as brief and informative as possible.
Authorship
Use first name, second initial, and surname of each author and provide the e-mail addresses of all
authors. The name(s) of the author(s) to whom inquiries about the paper should be addressed
should be marked with an asterisk. Give the complete mailing address(es) of the place(s) where
the work was conducted; include the fax number of the submitting author. If the current address
is different, include it in a footnote on the title page. It is the responsibility of the submitting
author to ensure that the manuscript and any revisions have the full approval of all coauthors.
Abstract
The abstract will be used directly for Chemical Abstracts. It should have a maximum length of
200 words. The individual systems, properties, and range of conditions studied should be given.
Text
Give essential information in a concise fashion and avoid unnecessary duplication in text, tables,
and graphs.
Symbols, Units, and Terminology
SI units must be used throughout the manuscript, and authors must adhere to the IUPAC
recommendations [See: Quantities, Units and Symbols in Physical Chemistry, 3rd ed.; RSC
Publishing: Cambridge, U.K., 2007; ISBN 0-85404-433-7 and Taylor, B. N. Guide to the Use of
the International System of Units (SI); NIST Special Publication 811; NIST: Gaithersburg, MD,
1995 (http://physics.nist.gov/cuu/)] regarding symbols, units, and terminology.
In the text, tables, and figures, the relationship between the physical quantity, numerical value,
and unit must follow the calculus of quantities (physical quantity = numerical value × unit, so
physical quantity/unit = numerical value). Symbols should be italicized and units given in roman
font. Examples: ln (p/kPa), T/K, 10
10D/m2s−1. Authors may use mole fraction or mass fraction
to define the chemical purity of composition. Molality (with units of molkg−1), not molarity
(with units of molm−3), should be used for concentration. Further information can be obtained
from http://physics.nist.gov/cuu/.
Symbols should be defined where they are first used in the text, equations, figures, and tables. As
a result, there should be no need for a Nomenclature List or List of Symbols.
Reporting Uncertainty in Results
This journal is concerned with the reporting of experimental and computational results. Such
results are of little use unless they are accompanied by a meaningful statement of uncertainty that
conforms with the Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement, ISO, October, 1993.
The recommendations have been succinctly presented in Chirico et al. J. Chem. Eng. Data 2003,
48, 1344–1359 and Guidelines for the Evaluation and Expression of Uncertainty in NIST
Measurement Results, NIST Technical Note 1297; Taylor, B. N.; Kuyatt, C. E.; NIST: 1994
(http://physics.nist.gov/cuu/). Specifically, the uncertainty of each measured variable must be
given and combined in quadrature to give the uncertainty in the derived properties, which must
be stated at a defined confidence interval. The number of significant digits must not exceed one
more digit than specified by the estimated uncertainty. The uncertainties of all reported quantities
must be included in the data tables.
Chemical Nomenclature
The IUPAC systematic names for the chemical substances studied must be provided. Once the
systematic name has been provided, it is acceptable to define either a common name or acronym
and for this be used for the remainder of the text, tables, and figures. Assistance with the IUPAC
nomenclature can be found at http://www.chem.qmul.ac.uk/iupac/.
Chemical Structures. If needed, structures should be produced with the use of a drawing program
such as ChemDraw.
Description of Chemical Samples
Provenance of chemical samples must be described, including origin, purification method,
purity, and method of purity determination. Mole or mass fraction should be used to define the
chemical purity and chemical composition of mixtures, except solutions, where molality must be
used. The use of a table format for this information is required. Examples of the acceptable table
format are available at http://trc.nist.gov/JCED-Support.html.
Equations
Equations should be numbered consecutively, and subscripts and superscripts should be evident.
When a correlating equation is used to fit results, the units of the variables should be contained
within the equation when the numerical values are also included or in the table of the coefficients
for the equation. Designate equations by, for example, eq 1 or eqs 1 to 3.
Safety
Authors are requested to call special attention, in both their manuscripts and their
correspondence with the Editors, to safety considerations such as explosive tendencies, special
precautionary handling procedures, and toxicity.
Acknowledgments
Include only necessary credits in the Acknowledgment section at the end of the text.
Supporting Information
Additional information that is not essential to the main body of the manuscript should be placed
in a separate Supporting Information file and uploaded as Supporting Information for
Publication. The Supporting Information file must begin with the manuscript title and authorship
as it appears at the beginning of the main manuscript. The main manuscript should include tables
showing all of the reported quantities with their uncertainties. However, exceptions can be made
when there is an excessively large amount of reported data. In such cases, the tables of data and
uncertainties can be placed in the Supporting Informat
