Remote Logging to a Syslog Daemon
The purpose of this document is to configure DataPower to log to a remote server with a Syslog Daemon.
Examples of a configuration to both an AIX syslog daemon and a Windows Syslog daemon are provided.
AIX Configuration
DataPower - Set up a Log Target:
Target type: Syslog
Local Identifier: something to identify this log target
Remote Host Address: IP for AIX syslog server
Remote IP Port: 514 (This entry can be left blank ). It will establish itself when the target attempts to log to the remote syslog server)
Syslog Facility: user
Subscribe to events:
Subscribe to XML firewall events with a debug priority
Viewing the AIX Syslog
The promenix AIX Server was used for this example.
The syslog daemon on the AIX server is active.
The configuration file for the AIX syslog is as follows: /etc/syslog.conf
The actual syslog file is: /var/tmp/syslog.user
This view of the AIX syslog shows the Identifier that configured in the log target ( Ozsyslog), and the events that were generated during an XML Firewall call.
Windows Configuration

Windows Syslog
Since MS Windows does not come with a syslog daemon, I downloaded and installed (on promdev01 ) a freeware daemon from the following site:
http://www.kiwisyslog.com/index.php
I also installed the SyslogGen tool locally to test the daemon.
Once installed and started, the following is the syslog on promdev01, as a result of a test message sent to a XML firewall:
In the windows syslog viewer, we see the syslog identifier configured in the windows log target ( Ozdomainlog ), and the events generated during an xml firewall call.
