Frequency analysis of English vocabulary and grammar
StigJohanssonandKnut Hofland
Oxford: ClarendonPress,1989.Vol. 1, 400pp.Vol. 2, 380pp.
These books have been derived from a million-word collection of
contemporaryBritish English printed texts, known as the Lancaster-
Oslo/Bergen Corpus - or LOB, for short. This corpus has been
analysedat four levels:(a) frequencyof word classes,(b) frequencyof
words, (c) combinations of word classes, and (d) combinations of
words. Volume 1givestheanalysisof (a) and (b); Volume 2 of (c) and
(d). Under (a), detailed information is given on the frequency of
nouns, verbs, prepositions, etc. in the corpus as a whole and in the
different text categoriesof the corpus (e.g. press, religion, science
fiction). Under (b), we aregivenan alphabeticallist of all thewords in
the corpus, including the frequency of different grammaticaluses.
Under (c), informationis providedon whichword classesimmediately
precedeand follow any givenword class.Under (d), combinationsare
givenfor a selectionof frequentnouns, verbs, and adjectives.
The books are a major stepforward in the provision of quantitative
information about British English. For example, a traditional word-
count of this corpus would tell you that round is used335 times in a
million words - useless information for a therapist or teacher,
becauseyou have no idea which parts of speechare involved. The
present book gives you separatefigures for round in all its uses -
preposition,adjective,commonnoun, adverbialparticle,andverb. Or
again,underword combinations,you aretold thenumberof occasions
whenaskwasfollowed by about, at, by, and otherforms (within ascan
of sevenwords). If you are devisingteachingmaterialson a specific
word or word class, and you want to make your sentencesreflect
closely the normal patternsof the language, you will need to know
which is the most frequent adjacentword or word class. These books
will be an invaluable aid to people involved in the creation of
grammaticaland lexicalteachingmaterials.Once you havegot usedto
thegrammaticalcodes(convenientlysummarisedin anappendix),you
use thesebooks like you would a dictionary. And, like a dictionary,
everyresourcecentreshould haveone.
