Book report about the Catcher in the Rye Jerome David Salinger is an American writer, whose work The Catcher in the Rye is the thought of as one of the most classic American literary masterpiece in the 20th. When he was 15 years old, he was sent to a military school where he finished The Catcher in the Rye his first novel. It is said that he set the background of this book according to the school. This novel tells us a story about a boy of fifteen years old named Holden. As he failed in four subjects, he was asked to quit the school, which has been the forth school. Then he hangs around two days and nights in afraid of facing his parents. On one night he takes his pack after he has freighted against his roommate, and goes back to New York. He stays in the cheap inn, drinks in the bar, dates with a girl, and finally he slips back to home to see his sister. When he parents comes back home, he escapes from home, and decides to set to west. At the gate of the park he intends to say goodbye to her little sister, however his sister insists on going with him together. At last he goes back to home and falls ill. When Holden goes back home, he told his beloved sister his most wonderful dream” And I’m standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff – I mean if they’re running and they don’t look where they’re going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. That’s all I’d do all day. I’d just be the catcher in the rye and all.”[ 1 ] From his word I see a boy with a warm heart is eager to guard the pure mind of the children against pollution from the ugly world. In other people’s eyes, Holden is a bad boy. He fails his subjects, dresses wired, smokes, and frights with his roommates and speaks dirty words, even is thought of having something wrong in his mind. In a word, he is a guy who makes teachers headache and lets parents worried. However, in my eyes, Holden is a good boy. He has a precious sincerely heart in that dark world. For caring about his roommate’s esteem, he puts his boundary suitcase under the bed when he sees his roommate take a worn suitcase to put stuff. He was ashamed of giving away too little to church, however, it is not. When hearing his brother’ death, he breaks the windows of the car regardless of the pain. In spite of the superficial things, we can find Holden has a soft heart. Faced with the hypocritical world, he is disappointed and confused, but he is not powerful enough to change the environment. He has to fake himself to rebel against the society, the principle in his own way. As the insensitive society, people are going to be pathetic. In terms of his uninhibited character, no wonder, he is regarded as a wired and bad guy, but in my opinion that is also the cutest part of Holden, trying his best to guard the beauty. And it makes Holden glitter in the decadence as if we find the priceless jewelry in the monk. At that night Holden tells his sister his dream about being a catcher in the rye. What a beautiful picture it is. The children run around in the golden wheal sea at ease. They are not afraid of the complex humanity and decadent society because there is a responsible man to protect their pure heart. Although he can not change the present constitution, he would like to be a hero to protect the children’s dream. At some point, I admire Holden very much because he still has a dream no matter in what kind of terrible condition. Compared with him, we often drift along aimlessly while complaining the terrible life. At last, he gives up the idea that he attends to go to the country and goes back to home then falls ill. We do not know how he will go on his life as if he does know his next school. Maybe he will do as what his teacher tells him that “T he mark of the immature man is that he wants to die nobly for a cause, while the mark of the mature man is that he wants to live humbly for one “[ 2 ] If we cannot change our life, we just have to adapt to the environment. But we must hold our persistence to be the catcher in the rye.
