从lighted 和 lit 谈起

英语中有少数动词的过去分词有两种形式,其中有些在用法上没有多大区别,但有几个在意义和用法上却
有所不同。
lighted 与lit
这两个词都是动词light 的过去式和过去分词,意义相同。但lighted 大都用作形容词,放在所修饰的名
词之前,而lit 作谓词动词用。
He had a lighted cigarette in his mouth.
他口里叼着一支燃着的香烟。
He lit a cigarette.
他点燃了一支香烟。
drunk 与 drunken sunk 与sunken
这两对都是分词,可作形容词用,但drunk 与 sunk 一般只用作表语;而drunken 和 sunken 一般只用作
定语。
He was dead drunk yesterday.
他昨天喝得大醉。
The ship is sunk.
船沉了。
I saw a drunken man lying in the street.
我看见个醉汉躺在街上。
Who can find the sunken ship?
谁能找到沉船,
struck 与stricken
二者都是strike 的过去分词,但现在stricken 只能用作形容词或用在复合形容词中,作表语或定语用。
其它场合需用struck 。
They were struck dumb by the news.
这消息使他们目瞪口呆。
He is well—stricken in years.
他年老了。
burned 与 burnt
在英国英语中,burned 多用作比喻义或不及物动词的过去式或过去分词,burnt 用作形容词或及物动词的
过去式或过去分词。
A desire of revenge burned with me.
我心中燃烧着复仇的烈焰。
The fire burned for the whole day.
大火烧了一整天。
Who will care the burnt child?
谁照管这个烧伤的孩子,
learnt 与learned
二者都是learn的过去分词,都可以作为谓语动词用。但learned 还可作为形容词用,这时它的读音是:

[‵l:nid],而learnt 则无此用法。
His mother learnt of her son′s success in the newspaper.
母亲在报纸上看到儿子成功的消息。
We have not yet learned whether he arrived safely.
我们尚未获悉他是否安全抵达。
He was a learned man.
他是个有学问的人。
The old fellow looked very learned, though he even didn’t know how to read and write. 那老家伙看起来学识渊博,虽然他一字不识,连笔也拿不了。
