MOSCOW, RUSSIA — A Russian border guards' ship fired dozens of warning shots Saturday to keep 20 Japanese ships from entering Russian territorial waters near the disputed Kuril Islands, the Interfax news agency said.
A border guards' spokesman said the incident occurred in the south Kurils. No further details were available.
The border guards say Japanese fishing boats regularly try to poach in the fish-rich waters, forcing them to fire warning shots. Thirty-four shots were fired Saturday, Interfax said.
