It used to be the capital city at one point in China?s history. b. I come from Shanghai, but I was born in Xi„an. In fact, I don?t have any relatives at all living in Xi„an. 3. Where about is your hometown? Xi?an is located in Shanxi Province, which is in central China. 4. Could you tell me something about your hometown? a. Hmm. 。 . well, the population is about 6 million. It„s famous for its historic sites, especially for the Terracotta Warriors. Xi?an was named the capital of China several times over many dynasties. Also, Xi„an is the starting point of the famous Silk Road, which was important in ancient times. The weather is extremely hot in summer, about 40 degrees Centigrade, and fairly cold in the winter, about 14 degrees Centigrade below zero. b. Okay. Well, first of all, my hometown is “X”。 I was born in the city, but moved to the outskirts of the town when I was small. “X” is a fairly large city — a pretty important economic centre actually. It has a population of 3 million. It?s pretty flat, and is situated right near a large lake. 5. What is the climate like in your hometown? It„s generally very hot in summer, about 40 degrees Centigrade. In winter, it?s cold — about minus 14 degrees Centigrade. The spring and autumn are both mild and pleasant, with temperatures ranging from 12 to 25 degrees Centigrade. Oh, and the summer time is extremely humid as well. There are four seasons. Spring Festival is the only time when all families gather together and stores and business are closed for several days. 7. Can you describe one of the main festivals celebrated in your country? National Day, which is on October 1st, is a big holiday. We get three days off and there are a lot of fireworks displays. I first came to Beijing in July 1996. It„s kind of surprising that I?ve already lived here for 4 years. I wasn„t planning to stay for a long time, but then I got a good job in a joint venture company. 9. How do you compare the climate in Beijing with that in your hometown? It?s about the same, except that we get a lot more snow in my hometown than we get in Beijing. I suppose it has something to do with the geography of the two cities. 10. In addition, Beijing is more beautiful than many other cities, because it?s the showcase of China. Has the transport changed over the past 20 years in China? Yes, very much indeed. We used to have very few bus lines years ago. Most people would use their bikes to get to places in the city. But now in big cities, there are more bus lines linking different places so it is a lot more convenient. Some cities also have subway lines so it makes traveling much faster than before. There are also more taxis in cities and more people are also using that as a mode of transportation. 12. Let„s talk a little about traveling and transport. For a long trip, how do you prefer to travel? In my country, if it is a long trip, I would prefer to take a train ride. Not only is train ride more economical, but also the time and route have shortened tremendously in the past few years. Air travel is more expensive and they are often beyond my budget. 13. Let?s talk about your hometown or village. What kind of place is it? My hometown is in the outskirts of Beijing. Maybe one hour travel time to get to Beijing. Fairly close I would say. The people there are mostly farmers but many young people have gone to Beijing to work. I like the place because it is very quiet. Unlike the people in big cities who are more complicated, the people of the place where I come from are usually more down to earth. 14. Why do you think trains are better than buses? whereas sometimes in the bus, Trains are better because they don„t encounter any traffic, we get stuck in the traffic. Also, it is always difficult to get on the buses during the peak hour but with the train, you can bet that the chances of getting on are always greater during the peak hour. 15. What kind of parent do you intend to be? I want to have a good relationship with my child. I have seen so many kids who don?t really know their own parents, and I don„t want to end up like that. I do plan to be strict, but loving. I want my child to always feel comfortable to approach me, whether they?ve been good or bad. It„s pretty easy to tell you what kind of parent I want to be, but when I actually become a parent, I?m sure I„ll have to revise my ideals a bit. 2012年公共英语三级口语必考话题(4) 公共英语考试网 更新:2011-11-23 编辑:梓淇 16. How different is your life from the lives of your parents? It„s very different. I have had many more opportunities and a much more comfortable life than they had. I remember my father telling me stories about having just one egg to eat each week, and that was the highlight of his week. I can?t really imagine life like that, so I„m grateful that I have a better life than my parents did. I appreciate their hard work to get us to this point in our lives. 17. Who does most of the shopping in your family? Well, I do most of the grocery shopping because there?s a market very close to my work. It„s very convenient for me to pick up milk or eggs or what ever on my way home from work. But, my wife also enjoys shopping very much. She usually does a lot of the clothes shopping for my son and me. 18. Are you a good cook? a. Yes. I learned everything from my mother who was really famous in our hometown for her cooking. I suppose she learned how to cook from her mother as well. I think that?s how I won my husband„s heart, by being such a good cook. He really appreciates good food, and I enjoy cooking for him. b. No. I?m a terrible cook. No one has ever taught me how to cook. I barely know how to boil an egg. Well, I do know how to make instant noodles, but it„s just a matter of pouring boiling water on them and waiting for some time. I don?t like cooking either, but I do like eating. I suppose I„ll have to marry someone who is a good cook. 19. Do you have a lot of friends? It depends on what you mean by “a lot”。。. I do have one or two very close friends, which is all that I need. I don?t have any trouble making friends, and I do have many good friends and acquaintances. But, really I feel most close to just one or two friends. 20. Why did you choose software development as your major? Because I„d always enjoyed working with computers and I was always good at math and logic. I was fortunate to have a computer in my home when I was in high school, and I spent quite a lot of time just playing around on the computer. My parents bought me all sorts of books on computer programming, and I just started to read them and pick up the ideas in them. 2012年公共英语三级口语必考话题(5) 公共英语考试网 更新:2011-11-23 编辑:梓淇 21. When and where did you graduate? What qualifications have you obtained? I graduated in 1995 from Beijing Science and Technology University. I have a Bachelor„s degree in Civil Engineering, and I?m a licensed Professional Engineer in China. 22. Which university is the best one in your country? Qinghua University is probably the best, although there are also others which are considered to be top notch. Still, Qinghua has the best international reputation, so I think most people would say it„s the best. 23. How are you as a student? I am a very organized and highly motivated student. I study very hard, and like to constantly review my lecture notes and textbooks. After each class, I re-read all my notes and refer to them in the textbook. When I encounter something I?m not sure of, I make a point of finding the professor and asking him or her for further explanation. Also, I have a very good memory. Once I learn something, I remember it for a very long time. 24. Is there anything you don„t like about your studies? Generally I like my studies but I hate the examination system. There are too many examinations during my school years and most of the time we have to memorize lots of things in books. I?m not very good at that and I find it„s a waste of time and energy. Other than that, I quite enjoy my school time. 25. What do you do for a living? I?m an engineer. But my day-to-day work involves quite a lot of management. In fact,I„m in charge of the Beijing branch of Motorola, and have a dozen or so engineers working under me to handle the technical part of the work. 2012年公共英语三级口语必考话题(6) 公共英语考试网 更新:2011-11-23 编辑:梓淇 26. What is your job? What does your job involve? I„m a sales manager. I?m in charge of overseeing sales operations for all of northern China, including Beijing. I have about 40 employees under me who are regional sales representatives. 27. How do you like your job? I enjoy it very much. It does have its ups and downs, but really it„s quite a good job. I enjoy the people I work with too, which really can make or break a job. We work very well together and can trust each other to do our fair share. 28. What made you decide to get into this field? I didn?t really plan to be a teacher at first, but my parents encouraged me to go into teaching. At first I really disliked it immensely. I lacked confidence and felt very insecure standing in front of a room full of students. Somehow, I made it through the first term, and managed a bit better the second. After that, I felt that I had made an impact on some of my students, and when they came to thank me for teaching them, I really was deeply touched. From that point on, I decided to work harder at preparing my classes so that I could teach them well. The following year went really well. I enjoyed my classes and the challenges of teaching. That„s when I knew that teaching was the right profession for me. 29. How did you become interested in your hobby? When I was young, my father has always involved me in different activities. My father is a ping-pong coach in a high school. So I always have a chance to follow him when he coached. When I was in the school, I got a chance to play with other students in other sports. So that?s how I developed my skills in different sports. 30. How do you spend your weekends? I usually sleep on Saturday morning if I can, study in the afternoon in the library, and go out with friends in the evening. On Sundays, I like to go shopping and just spend time walking around outside, if the weather is nice. If I don„t have much money, I still like to go window shopping and I almost get as much pleasure out of that! 2012年公共英语三级口语必考话题(7) 公共英语考试网 更新:2011-11-23 编辑:梓淇 31. What is the most popular sport in your country? I„d have to say that football is really the most popular sport in China. There are literally millions of crazy football fans. Whenever there is a match on TV between China and another country, you can hear loud cheers and shouts all around the city whenever China scores a goal, and loud groans and moans when the other country scores. 32. How do you spend your free time? I attend training courses in the evenings. However, as a mother, I also take my son somewhere on weekends. For example, I may drive to the suburbs or the countryside around Beijing and go fishing, swimming and mountain climbing. I enjoy family life very much.www.examw.com 33. Do you often go to the cinema/theatre? a. Yes. On Friday nights, I usually go and watch whatever?s playing. It„s kind of a family tradition that I started when my son was young. b. No. I?m not really interested in the theatre. I„d much rather read newspapers and watch TV than pay for the theatre. 34. What kind of films do you like? I definitely like comedy best. I don?t see why I should pay money to be sad or scared, so I really don„t like the tear-jerker type of films nor horror films. I don?t mind adventure type films, just as long as they don„t become horror films. 35. Do you often watch TV? What?s your favourite programme? a. No, I hardly watch TV at all. In fact, I don„t find most programmes interesting. I think it?s just a waste of time watching TV. b. Yes, I like watching the news. But, I don„t really watch many other shows on TV besides the news. I just don?t have time to see what„s on each week. Some TV shows are done in several parts. If you miss one or two episodes, you?re really lost. So, because I don„t watch TV that regularly, I really find that it?s hard to follow a series when I miss several episodes. So, I don„t watch them. 2012年公共英语三级口语必考话题(8) 公共英语考试网 更新:2011-11-23 编辑:梓淇 36. Who„s your favourite film star? Can you describe him/her to me? I like Leonardo di Caprio. I first saw him when he starred in Titanic, and after that I was head over heels in love with him. He?s very handsome. 。. blonde hair, blue eyes. He has this look about him that makes him seem very sad, but at the same time hopeful. I have his posters all over my room at home. 37. What aspect of English do you find the most difficult? Pronunciation. I wish that I could speak just like a native speaker. But, once I open my mouth,it„s so obvious that I?m not a native English speaker. I always have trouble with “l”s and “n”s. Sometimes I confuse them. Perhaps because in my dialect, we interchange them all the time. I„m not even aware that I?m doing this. So, I really have to concentrate when I speak English, so that I„m very careful to pronounce things correctly. 38. What sports are played in china? Ping pong and football are probably the most popular sports. China has a very large following of football fans. Even though our football teams don?t do well in international competitions — like the World Cup, we still are crazy about football. Other sports that are played in China are badminton, volleyball, basketball, swimming, and tennis. 39. What is the population control situation like in China today? It„s better than before. At least things are pretty much under control, but there are still a lot of people in China. I think everyone accepts the fact that they can only have one child. Some of my friends are even thinking of not having any children at all. Most of them, though, are delaying having children, because they?re focusing more on their careers right now. 40. Why do people in China traditionally want to have a son? Sons are preferred because they carry on the family name. Also, when they marry, their wife joins the family. This means that the parents gain a daughter-in-law. But when a daughter marries, she joins her husband„s family. In the countryside, sons can also help more with work on the family?s farm, just because they„re stronger and have more endurance. 2012年公共英语三级口语必考话题(9) 公共英语考试网 更新:2011-11-23 编辑:梓淇 41. What is the situation in the rural areas in China? It„s not so easy to monitor and control the population growth in the countryside as in the city, because the countryside is so scattered. Besides, some farmers still give birth to more than one child in spite of the penalty from the government because they need sons to help with farm work and to take care of them when they grow old. 42. What difficulties do Chinese farmers have concerning their old age? They have no pension and therefore must rely on their families to support them. If they have a son, by tradition, he must take care of his parents. But, if it?s a daughter, she leaves to join and there is no one left to provide for the parents in their old age. It?s her husband„s family, really a terrible situation for farmers, because they work so hard all their lives, and if they don„t have a son, they have no security when they get old. 43. How would you sum up work conditions for women in China?www.examw.com Women have almost equal opportunity with men. But in the countryside, women aren?t treated very well still. In the city, educated women have excellent opportunities to get good jobs and move up the career ladder. But women in the countryside are treated almost like property. The less educated the woman or her husband is, the more likely it is that she will not be treated well. 44. What does friendship mean to you? What kind of people do you make friends with? Friendship is extremely important to me. It„s like being brothers or sisters, but even more than that. I mean, I would do nearly anything for my friend, and I?d expect that he„d do the same for me. If he didn?t help me when I was in need, then I would not consider him a good friend. I have many different kinds of friends. Some are loud, others are shy. There„s not really just one type of friends that I like. I prefer having a real variety of friends. 45. What do you think of the practice of setting up key schools in primary and secondary school education in China? a. I think it?s a good system because it helps the brighter students receive the educational challenges they need. When the students are streamed by ability level, it allows the schools to pick up the pace of instruction and the bright students never feel bored in school.www.Examw.com b. I think it„s an old system that needs changing. Not every intelligent student is accepted by a key school, even if they are academically able. Also, intelligent students shouldn?t be segregated. They need to learn to deal with all kinds of other students. Segregating bright students doesn„t provide them with the skills they need to communicate and interact with others, which is what they?ll need once they start working. 2012年公共英语三级口语必考话题(10) 公共英语考试网 更新:2011-11-23 编辑:梓淇 46. What do you think the goal of education should be? Should it be a process of learning what is useful for your future life or should it be simply learning for enjoyment? Why? Education should really be a time when you learn new ways of thinking and are challenged to go beyond what you know. But if I were to choose between learning useful things versus learning for enjoyment, I would definitely choose learning for enjoyment. I don„t mean just learning when I feel like it. Rather, I mean studying things that interest me. If I am truly interested in a subject, I will delve into the material in greater depth and detail. 47. Do you think smoking is a problem that needs special attention and has to be solved? If so,why? Yes. People in China aren?t aware of the terrible health consequences of smoking. They just smoke because it„s socially acceptable to do so. If more people knew they might get cancer from smoking, they would probably stop smoking, or at least smoke less. I do think that the tobacco industry is a big business, and if we tried to eliminate smoking, we?d also be eliminating jobs. It„s a tough situation, but at the very least, people should be told that smoking causes lung cancer. That way they can make an informed choice about whether to smoke or not.www.examw.com 48. In what way do you think university training is helpful or falls short? In China, going to university can help me get a good job. But, many courses are too old and not very useful. The professors are just recently graduated and very new in their field, or older and not current with new developments. Also, we have to take all sorts of courses that are not directly related to our field. This, I feel, is a complete waste of time. We could be learning much more in our own field, instead of spending time learning courses that have no use for our future. 2012年公共英语三级口语必考话题(11) 公共英语考试网 更新:2011-11-23 编辑:梓淇 49. What role does tourism play in your country„s economy? Tourism is playing a more and more important role in our country?s economy. Since the opening up, the number of tourists has increased dramatically, and this is a useful source of foreign currency for the country. what are the most serious problems associated with modern life? 50. In your opinion, I think that parents are very busy with their work or careers and have little time to spend with their child. Many people only think about money, and as a result, their families often suffer. What„s the point of leading a modern life if you?re not very happy as a family? I really think that families are very important, but they are often overlooked and underrated. If China wants to be a strong country, we need to do all we can to strengthen our families. 51. Some local students feel that overseas students are treated better. What do you think? a. I don„t think it?s completely true. Overseas students have much greater challenges to face, so relative to what they have to go through, they are treated the same as the local students. Perhaps there are slightly more lenient entrance requirements, but international students are paying quite a lot of tuition in order to study at the university. b. In my opinion, the school authority should give preference to overseas students. Overseas students come here all the way from their home country and everything is strange: the environment, culture, customs, and food are different and they have no relatives or friends here and most of them feel pretty homesick and lonely. Emotions of this kind may affect their study. So getting some preferential treatment can help them alleviate these problems and get used to college life as soon as possible. 2012年公共英语三级口语必考话题(12) 公共英语考试网 更新:2011-11-23 编辑:梓淇 52. How do you think road accidents can be prevented? Through education. If we can teach people the rules of the road, there will be fewer accidents. I don„t mean just teaching the drivers, but also teaching pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, etc. Much of the problem behind road accidents lies in peoples lack of understanding of how the system works. Of course not all road accidents can be prevented, but there will certainly be a great reduction in accidents just through a bit of education. 53. How do you think China?s membership in WTO will benefit China? Well, it„s a big topic to talk about. But I?m sure it will benefit China and other WTO members as well if China becomes a member of WTO. The common Chinese customers will benefit most from it because prices of imported products will be reduced and the quality and after sales services of national products will be improved.www.examw.com 54. What do you think of the unemployment problem in China? I think the unemployment problem is getting more and more serious now. China is a country with a large population and there has always been more labour than required. It was not a big problem in the past under the planned economy system, but now enterprises could not afford the burden of a surplus labour force and many workers in state owned enterprises are being laid off. Something must be done about it before more serious problems arise. 55. What do you think is the main reasons for the gap between rich and poor? Well, if you ask me, I don„t think you can expect everyone to become rich at the same time. Under the market economy system it?s only natural for the most capable people to make a fortune first. Life is a competition after all. 2012年公共英语三级口语必考话题(13) 公共英语考试网 更新:2011-11-23 编辑:梓淇 56. What„s the housing situation/condition like in your city? Well, the housing condition in my city has been improved a lot in recent years. But there are still many people who live in narrow, shabby houses. Besides, instead of getting free houses from the government as part of their benefits, people have to buy houses from real estate companies, and many of them can not afford the high cost of an apartment. 57. How do you think global warming can be prevented? Well, there is no easy solution. As far as I know, global warming is caused by green-house effect which results from too much carbon dioxide in the air. I think the government should take measures to limit the number of private cars and make efforts to develop the public transportation system. Besides, We should try to replace fossil fuels with new, cleaner energy resources. 58. What?s your view on the increasing divorce rate in China? Well, it„s not an easy question to answer. The world today is changing rapidly, so are people?s minds, I think there are three reasons for the high divorce rate. First, people„s idea of happiness is changing. Many young people don?t want to stick to a stable but unhappy relationship at the cost of their life-long happiness. Second, women„s social position is much higher today, especially in big cities. Many of them don?t want to sacrifice their own career to support their husbands. Finally, there are sometimes economic reasons. The cost of supporting a family is higher and higher and so are people„s expectations of their quality of life. A family can not be happy without a solid financial foundation. 2012年公共英语三级口语必考话题(14) 公共英语考试网 更新:2011-11-23 编辑:梓淇 59. What kind of possessions indicate status in your country? In my country, cars and housings are always in association with status. Most people would use these two criteria as a measurement to see whether a person is achieving something in his/her career. 60. How has technology changed? Technology has taken a big leap since the open door policy. More and more people are realizing the importance of technology in increasing productivity and efficiency. People are trained to use technology in work places. People are realizing that without technology, it will be difficult to compete in the global economy. 61. In China, are there lots of advertisements and commercials telling people to buy this and buy that? Yes, we are getting more and more commercials every day trying to influence consumers„ purchases. It certainly has an effect because some people believe what they see on the commercials is true and will fall for it. 62. How do you think the Internet will change people?s buying habits in the future? I think the change will be incredible in the future. People rely so much on the internet nowadays that they would spend a lot of their time in front of the computer. We are seeing a trend now that more and more people are buying things over the Internet and I think this will be the trend in the future. People will not get out of their house but just shop from home. 2012年公共英语三级口语必考话题(15) 公共英语考试网 更新:2011-11-23 编辑:梓淇 63. Why do you go to the Internet for your news stories? Well, to get the latest updates. Also, in the Internet there is a variety of news so perhaps I may come across something I can never encounter in the newspaper. 64. Why do you think that newspapers are more reliable than, say, TV news? Because before a newspaper is printed, the editor will check through the articles and the sources often more reliable. In TV news, the news broadcaster may say something he or she thinks is right. So I feel newspaper are more reliable. 65. Why do you think advertising influences what people buy very strongly? Advertising is a very powerful tool in the media. Because many people do not have the real knowledge of the product, most of the time they rely on media for information, which they think is trustworthy. 66. Can you give me an example of advertising that you don„t like? Yes, I don?t like advertising targeting at children. I think children are too young to make a rational decision. Children are most easily influenced by what they see on the advertisement. I think this is not healthy for children and even a headache for parents if the kids always pester their parents to buy things for them. 2012年公共英语三级口语必考话题(16) 公共英语考试网 更新:2011-11-23 编辑:梓淇 67. Do you think in the future people will be more conscious of what they see or hear in the advertisement? I think as people become smarter shoppers, they will be more conscious of the message in the advertisement. Advertisers will have to be more responsible in what they tell people, because otherwise the product will not be able to gain a foothold in the market. 68. Do you foresee there will be more advertisements in the future? Yes, I believe so. We are getting more and more foreign advertisements, and as more investments are coming in, I think this is something unavoidable.
