While you may find it comfortable to sit with one knee crossed over the other, it might be causing health problems that you are not aware of. A study published in Blood Pressure Monitoring stated that sitting with your legs crossed can increase your blood pressure. The reason this happens is because the blood in your legs has to work against gravity to be pumped back to your heart, crossing one leg over the other increases resistance, making it even harder for the blood to circulate. This causes your body to increase your blood pressure to push the blood back to the heart. You won’t feel any immediate effects, but if you sit for long periods of time it’s important that you take note of how long you have your legs crossed for. You shouldn’t have your legs crossed for more than 15 minutes, and it’s important that you get up and walk around at least once every hour. You also might notice that when you sit with your legs crossed for long periods of time your feet and legs get tingly or have the feeling of being asleep. This is because when one leg sits on top of the other it causes pressure on the veins and nerves in your legs and feet. It can cause numbness and/or temporary paralysis in the legs, ankles, or feet. While the feeling of discomfort may only last a minute or two, repeatedly crossing your legs until they feel numb can cause permanent nerve damage. So next time you sit down, try to get yourself in the habit of sitting with both of your feet on the floor. Not only will it help your posture and stability, but it will also save your health in the long run.(316) 21.What makes crossing legs harmful? A. raise people’s blood pressure. B. preventing against gravity becomes difficult. C. the burden of hearts’ becomes even heavy D. the circulation of blood is not easy. 22. Which is a fairly good choice for sitting? A. Crossing legs for no more than 15mins B. When sitting, people should take note. C. Change posture on a regular basis when crossing legs. D. When sitting , keep still 23. What’s the purpose of the passage? A. Introduce a bad habit. B. Crossing sitting and solutions. C. Bad effects of crossing sitting D. Good habit of sitting B Microsoft has developed a new smartphone app that interprets eye signals and translates them into letters, allowing people with motor neurone disease to communicate with others from a phone. The GazeSpeak app combines a smartphone’s camera with artificial intelligence to recognize eye movements in real time and convert them into letters, words and sentences. For people suffering from ALS(渐冻症), also known as motor neurone disease, eye movement can be the only way they are able to communicate. “Current eye-tracking input systems for people with ALS or other motor impairments are expensive, not robust under sunlight, and require frequent re-calibration and substantial, relatively immobile setups,” said Xiaoyi Zhang, a researcher at Microsoft who developed the technology. “To mitigate the drawbacks…we created GazeSpeak, an eye-gesture communication system that runs on a smartphone, and is designed to be low-cost, robust, portable and easy to learn.” The app is used by the listener by pointing their smartphone at the speaker. A chart that can be stuck to the back of the smartphone is then used by the speaker to determine which eye movements to make in order to communicate. The sticker shows four grids of letters, which each correspond to a different eye movement. By looking up, down, left or right, the speaker selects which grids the letters they want belong to. The artificial intelligence algorithm is then able to predict the word or sentence they are trying to say. Zhang’s research, Smartphone-Based Gaze Gesture Communication for People with Motor Disabilities, is set to be presented at the Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems in May.(269) 24.What does the app works according to the text? A. recognize signals through camera. B. identify movement of eyes and change to language. C. help people cure the disease. D. create artificial intelligence. 25. What’s right about ALS? A. People’s organs can’t function at all B. All of the organs can’t function. C. people’s organs are frozen. D. People can still communicate without barrier. 26. What’s the underlined part mean? A. The system can’t be used in the sunlight. B. The system can’t be put into use. C. The system is not perfect at present. D. The system is not available for everyone. 27. Who would be the potential users of the app? A. hose who have physical disease. B. People who can’t move at all. C. Those who can’t communicate normally at all. D. Those who has motor neurone disease. C On the day the tornado hit, there was no indication severe weather was on its way—the sky was blue and the sun had been out. The first alert my husband, Jimmy, 67, and I, 65, got came around 9 p.m., from some scrolling text on the TV Jimmy was watching. we changed the channel from the presidential primary debate I had been watching to our local Pensacola, Florida, station. The house shook, and the power went out. We had three flights of steps to navigate to get to the relative safety of the first floor. Because the closet down there is wedged underneath a brick staircase, it seemed like the sturdiest place in our town house to wait things out. It felt as if there were no floor underneath me as the wind lifted me off my feet. I gripped the banister and tried to move forward, but this intense pressure held me in place. In those seconds of practical stillness, I could hear everything around me rattling. By the time I reached the closet, the tornado had been over us for about a minute. Jimmy pushed me down to the closet floor, but he couldn’t get inside himself because of the wind. I gripped Jimmy’s arm as the tornado sucked the door open—we never did get it fully shut—and tried to bring Jimmy with it. My knees and scalp were full of glass, but in that moment, I felt no pain. If I had let go, Jimmy would have flown right out the back of the house and into the bay. The storm lasted four minutes. In that time, four of the twelve town houses in our unit were completely destroyed and ours suffered the most damage. Amazingly, none of us were severely injured.(298) 28. How did the author find a perfect shelter? A. By three lights. B. By entering the shelter directly. C. By moving from stairs. D. By a navigator. 29. In the Rivesville town art gallery, a window opened and a man came in. His name was Harry Black, and he was a thief. It was dark in the art gallery, but Harry had a light. He looked across the room at a painting. “There it is!” he said. Harry moved quickly across the room. He stood and looked at the painting. “A million dollars for this?” he thought. “I don’t understand it.” But he took a knife from his coat. Then he took the painting very, very slowly from its frame. Harry went back across the room to the window, but he walked into a table. There was a beautiful blue glass vase on the table. It fell on the floor and broke into pieces. He ran across the piece of glass to the window. Harry rented a room in Mrs. Allen’s house. He went quietly up to his room and closed the door. In his room, Harry took the painting from his bag. He wrapped it with a newspaper and put the newspaper under his bed. In the morning, Janey Allen was putting old bottles into a box. On the TV, a reporter was at the Rivesville art gallery. He was talking about the lost painting and the broken glass vase. Janey glanced at the photo of the blue vase. At that time Harry wasn’t in his room. He was talking on his telephone. W: All right. Let’s make it one day later. Text 4 M: For the last time, please accept my offer! I know exactly what these things are supposed to cost. I’ve been in this business for over twelve years, so I know what I’m talking about. W: Sir, perhaps you haven’t heard me clearly. We only sell items at fixed prices here. All prices are final, I’m afraid. T ext 5 W: Honey, I’m going downtown. Do we need anything from the grocery store? M: We need some steaks and some corn for the barbecue tonight. And maybe you could get some stamps afterwards. W: All right. Text 6 W: Hello, young man. Be a good boy and help an old woman cross the street, would you? M: Of course, madam. I’d be glad to. W: Oh, I’m just going to the drugstore over there. I’ve got to pick up some medication for my husband. M: Well, I will wait for you outside the drugstore and help you back across the street whenever you’re ready. W: You are so kind! Text 7 M: Have you seen Dan the Bear? W: No, I haven’t. M: Oh, well, he’s supposed to go onstage in 10 minutes. All the kids are waiting for him to sing. W: Hmm... Maybe he’s out by the fish tank giving away balloons and talking with the dolphin trainer. Did you check there? M: Yes, I did, but they said they hadn’t seen him. If you see him, please tell him that he’s needed on the small stage as soon as possible. M: Well, I went snowboarding on Saturday, and I went to my grandparents’ house on Sunday. W: How fun! It sounds like you were busy. I wish I had gone snowboarding. Maybe I’ll go this weekend. Aren’t you tired after your busy weekend? M: A little, but it was a productive weekend, so I’m feeling okay. I had been planning to visit my grandparents for a long time, and I finally got some time to do it. Did you just stay in the dorm all weekend? W: Well, I rented a bunch of DVDs and watched them all. I’m Bob. It’s nice to meet you. W: Nice to meet you, too. M: Please come in. W: Here is a little gift for your family. It’s a calendar with all the community events on it. M: Thank you! I really appreciate it. W: Since we are neighbors, if you need any help with anything, please feel free to ask me. M: I will. Actually, I am worried about the security of this community because my house has been robbed twice before. W: Oh don’t worry about that. There are security guards on duty 24 hours a day. M: Really? That’s good. Are there any supermarkets in the neighborhood? W: Of course. There is a Carrefour nearby. I’ll take you there sometime if you want. M: Terrific! Come and visit anytime. W: Thanks. I will! Text 10 Deep Spring is an American college. It is an unusual college. It is located high in the mountains in California, not in a college town. The campus is a collection of old buildings with no beautiful classrooms. The only college-like thing about Deep Springs is its library. Students can use the 17000 books 24 hours a day. The library is never crowded because there are only 24 students at the college, and they are all male. There are only five professors. These teachers believe in the college, but they are not well-paid. In fact, they only get paid about 9000 dollars a year. The college gives teachers and students something more important than money —peace and quiet. There is no place like Deep Springs. Students are there to learn and they cannot run away from their problems because there is no place to run to. At most colleges, students can close their books and go to a film, or they can go out to restaurants or parties, but the students at Deep Springs have completely different activities. They can talk to each other or their teachers, or they can go out for a walk in the mountains, and that’s about it. Deep Springs is far from the world of restaurants and cinemas. There isn’t even one television set on campus.
