I have been fortunate to have had numerous teachers and professors who I respect for their patience and intelligence. There are artists that have inspired me by their natural talents and original creativity. I value many political leaders, who have inspired me by their contributions to society, and their abilities to change our futures. But of all the people I have known in my life, the person I admire most is my father. As the youngest girl in my family, I always considered myself to be “Daddy’s little girl”. While I grew up, it always made me sad to see so many of my friends and neighbors without a father or father-like figure around. This helped me appreciate how my father continuously pushed me to , so I could accomplish my work outstandingly among the people. Whenever I feel like giving excel up, or have a question or a concern, I know I can always call on him for advice. From him I have also learned that sometimes you have to put others’ needs ahead of your own, but you should make sure that you are not taken advantage of by others. His strength seems to be unbreakable during hard times, and he is extremely determined to accomplish anything he sets his mind on, no matter how tiny it is. I highly respect him for how he stands up for what he believes in, and will never back down. I have always admired his compassion for those in need, and sense of understanding, ready to give a hand when needed. He is a very reserved man, but to everybody’s surprise, he has a great sense of humor, and always knows how to put a smile on the faces of his wife, children and friends. Living in his affection and instruction, I am very proud of my father. He also professes(声称) how proud he is of his children, and is still there to support us in whatever we are involved in. 41. Eat Blueberries Aside from being a healthy and delicious snack, blueberries contain pterostilbene, which has important colon(结肠) cancer-fighting prosperities. But wait, it gets better. Blueberries also offer a large dose of vitamins C (14 milligrams per cup). So at breakfast, try to take in a cup and a half of blueberries in your cereal or yogurt, or mixed with other berries. 2. Drink Pomegranate(石榴)Juice The deep red juice of the pomegranate contains polyphenols, isoflavones and ellagic acid, which together create a powerful anticancer mixture. Most recently, researchers from the University of Wisconsin at Madison has discovered that 16 ounces of pomegranate juice per day also may inhibit the growth of lung cancer. 3. Relax Feeling stressed or worried? Find ways to relax and you may reduce your chances of developing cancer. Purdue University researchers tracked 1,600 men over 12 years and found that half of those with high levels of worry died during the study period. Only 20 percent of the optimists died before the study were completed, while 34 percent of the extremely anxious men died of some type of cancer. Instead of stressing about the past or future, focus on the present and relax! 4. Take Selenium(硒) Selenium is well known for its cancer-fighting properties. In a study of almost 1,000 men, researchers from the Journal of the National Cancer Institute found that when men with the lowest initial levels of selenium in their bodies received a daily supplement over a 4 year period, they cut their prostate(前列腺) cancer risk by a remarkable 92 percent. However, it is possible to get too much of a good thing, so monitor your intake of selenium-containing supplements, Brazil nuts, tuna(金枪鱼), meats and grains carefully. 5. Eat Sushi(寿司) Seaweed may not be your idea of a great snack, but it is high in fiber, calcium and iron, and dry, roasted seaweed sheets used in sushi provide the additional benefits of vitamins A and C. Sushi rolls are also high in protein— a typical spicy tuna roll has only 290 calories but packs 24 grams of protein. So don’t skimp(节省)on the Sushi! 6. Enjoy the Outdoors Vitamin D causes early death of cancer cells. A study published in the American Journey of Clinical Nutrition reported that women who supplemented their diets with 1,000 international. Units of vitamin D every day had a 60 percent to 77 percent lower incidence of cancer ever a four-year period that did women taking a placebo(无效对照剂). Experts recommend supplementing your fun in the sun with 1,100 to 2,000IU of vitamin D each day. 7. Breathe Clean Air There’s no question that secondhand smoke kills. A recent American Journal of Public Health study showed that nonsmokers working in smoky places had three times the amount of carcinogen(致癌物质) in their urine(尿) that nonsmokers working in smoke-free locations. What’s worse, their levels of the carcinogen rose 6 percent for every hour worked. Nine states have banned smoking in all workplaces, bars and restaurants. The message is clear: Do whatever you can to avoid the cloud of smoke. 8. Break a Sweat Even a small amount of exercise can offer major cancer-fighting benefits. In a study of 29,110 men published in the International Journal of Cancer, men who exercised just once a week had a percent lower risk of metastasis(转移性) prostate cancer than men who didn’t work out at all. The better the frequency, duration and intensity of the exercise, the bigger the reduction in risk, according to the study. 45. To prevent yourself from catching colon cancer, you should eat ____ as often as possible. A. sushi B. blueberries C. pomegranates D. Vitamin D 46. A person is very likely to catch some type of cancer if ______. A. he is very fond of exercise every day. B. he is addicted to smoking C. he is always feeling extremely stressed or worried D. he likes to have meals in restaurants 47. _____ will remarkably reduce the risk of men’s prostate cancer. A. Having a daily supplement of selenium B. Drinking a cup of pomegranate juice every day C. Breathing fresh air now and then D. Taking exercise at least once a week 48. If you want to keep cancer away, it is particularly important to ______. A. have a daily supplement of vitamins B and C B. try to ignore the secondhand smoking C. take in as many selenium-containing supplements as possible D. having exercise as often as possible C LONDON — Here's a new warning from health experts: Sitting is deadly. Scientists are increasingly warning that sitting for long periods—even if you also exercise regularly—could be bad for your health. And it doesn't matter where the sitting takes place — at the office, at school, in the car or before a computer or TV—just the overall number of hours it occurs. Several studies suggest people who spend most of their days sitting are more likely to be fat, have a heart attack or even die. In an editorial published this week in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, Elin Ekblom-Bak of the Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences suggested that authorities rethink how they define physical activity to highlight the dangers of sitting. While health officials have issued guidelines recommending minimum amounts of physical activity, they haven't suggested people try to limit how much time they spend in a seated position. "After four hours of sitting, the body starts to send harmful signals," Ekblom-Bak said. She explained that genes regulating(调节) the amount of glucose(葡萄糖) and fat in the body start to shut down. Even for people who exercise, spending long stretches of time sitting at a desk is still harmful. Tim Armstrong, a physical activity expert at the World Health Organization, said people who exercise every day—but still spend a lot of time sitting—might get more benefit if that exercise were spread across the day, rather than in a single bout(一回). Still, in a study published in 2009 that tracked more than 17,000 Canadians for about a dozen years, researchers found people who sat more had a higher death risk, whether or not they exercised. "We don't have enough evidence yet to say how much sitting is bad," said Peter Katzmarzyk of the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, who led the Canadian study. "But it seems the more you can get up and interrupt this sedentary behaviour, the better." Figures from a U.S. survey in 2003-2004 found Americans spend more than half their time sitting, from working at their desks to sitting in cars. Experts said more research is needed to figure out just how much sitting is dangerous, and what might be possible to offset those effects. "People should keep exercising because that has a lot of benefits," Ekblom-Bak said. "But when they're in the office, they should try to interrupt sitting as often as possible," she said. 49. What is the subject of the text? A. Sitting too much could be deadly B. How to avoid sitting too much C. Not sitting too much while working D. More and more people sit too much 50. According to the research, _______. A. the more time you spend in exercising in a single bout, the healthier you will be B. those who often sit too much are sure to grow fat or suffer from a heart attack C. regular exercise is effective to get rid of the side effects of sitting too much D. you had better not sit for more than four hours in a single bout 51. How does sitting too much affect the human body? A. It results in a higher death rate. B. It increases glucose and fat in the body. C. It makes a person unable to exercise long enough in a day. D. It causes the gene to fail to balance the glucose and fat in the body. 52. In the opinion of Ekblom-Bak, you’d better have a rest in the office by_______. A. sending your friends e-mails B. having a walk around your office C. chatting online or playing computer games D. listening to music with your head on the desk D Someday a stranger will read your e-mail without your permission or scan the websites you’ve visited. Or perhaps someone will casually glance through your credit card purchases or cell phone bills to find out your shopping preferences or calling habits. In fact, it’s likely some of these things have already happened to you. Who would watch you without your permission? It might be a spouse, a girlfriend, a marketing company, a boss, a cop or a stcriminal. Whoever it is, they will see you in a way you never intended to be seen—the 21 century equivalent of being caught naked. Psychologists tell us boundaries are healthy and it’s important to reveal(make sth known) yourself to friends, family and lovers in stages, at appropriate times. But a few boundaries remain. The digital bread crumbs(碎屑) you leave everywhere make it easy for strangers to reconstruct who you are, where you are and what you like. In some cases, a simple Google search can reveal what you think. Like it or not, increasingly we live in a world where you simply cannot keep a secret. The key question is: Does that matter? When opinion polls ask Americans about privacy, most say they are concerned about losing it. A survey found an overwhelming pessimism about privacy, with 60 percent of respondents saying they feel their privacy is “slipping away, and that bothers me.” But people say one thing and do another. Only a tiny fraction(部分) of Americans change any behaviors in an effort to preserve their privacy. Few people turn down a discount at tollbooths(收费 站) to avoid using the EZ-Pass system that can track automobile movements. And few turn down supermarket loyalty cards. Privacy economist Alessandro Acquisti has run a series of tests that reveal people will surrender personal information like Social Security numbers just to get their hands on a pitiful 50-cent-of coupon(优惠券). But privacy does matter — at least sometimes. It’s like health: when you have it, you don’t notice it. Only when it’s gone do you wish you’d done more to protect it. st53. By saying “the 21 century equivalent of being caught naked”, the author means ______. A. people’s personal information is easily accessed without their knowledge stB. in the 21 century people try every means to look into others’ secrets C. people tend to be more frank with each other in the information age D. criminals are easily caught on the spot with advanced technology 54. What would psychologists advise on the relationships between friends? A. Friends should open their hearts to each other. B. Friends should always be faithful to each other. C. There should be a distance even between friends. D. There should be fewer arguments between friends. 55. We cannot keep a secret in today’s world because ______. A. modern society has finally developed into an open society B. people leave traces around when using modern technology C. there are always people who are curious about others’ affairs D. many search engines profit by revealing people’s identities 56. In regard to privacy protection, most Americans ________. A. change behaviors that might disclose their identity B. use various loyalty cards for business transactions C. rely more and more on electronic devices D. talk a lot but hardly do anything about it E What picture do you have of the future? Will life in the future be better, worse of the same as now? What do you hope about the future? Futurologists predict that life will probably be very different in 2050 in all the fields of activity, from entertainment to technology. First of all, it seems that TV channels will have disappeared by 2050. Instead, people will choose a programme from a menu and a computer will send the programme directly to the television. Today, we can use the World Wide Web to read newspaper stories and see pictures on a computer thousands of kilometers away. By 2050, music, films, programmes, newspapers and books will come to us by computer. In what concerns the environment, water will have become one of our most serious problems. In many places, agriculture is changing and they are growing fruit and vegetables to export. This uses a lot of water. Demand for water will increase ten times between now and 2050 and there could be serious shortages. Some futurologists predict that water could be the cause of war if we don’t act now. In transport, cars will run on new, clean fuels and they will go very fast. Cars will have computers to control the speed of the car and there won’t be any accidents. Today, many cars have computers that tell the drivers exactly where they are. By 2050, the computer will control the car and drive it to your destination. On the other hand, space planes will take people half way around the world in two hours. Nowadays, the United States Shuttle can go into space and land on Earth again. By 2050, space planes will fly all over the world and people will fly from Los Angels to Tokyo in just two hours. In the field of technology, robots will have replaced people in factories. Many factories already use robots. Bit companies prefer robots — they do not ask for pay rises or go on strike, and they work 24 hours a day. By 2050, we will see robots everywhere — in factories, schools, offices, hospitals, shops and homes. In particular, medicine technology will have conquered many diseases. Today, there are electronic devices that connect directly to the brain to help people hear. By 2050, we will be able to help blind and deaf people see again and hear again and scientists will be able to produce clones of people and decide how they look, how they behave and how much intelligence they have. Scientists will be able to do these things — but should they? 57. What may happen in the field of entertainment in the future? A. What to broadcast on TV is decided by yourself. B. A computer may choose TV programmes for you. C. You may choose the channels from the menu in a computer. D. The programme made by yourself may be sent to TV. 58. After reading Paragraph 3, we can know _______. A. fruits will be more and more expensive B. people will be short of supplies of vegetables C. planting will need much less water in the future D. we should take measures to save water from now on 59. ________ is the main factor that makes driving much safe in the future A. Good traffic condition B. A good knowledge of driving skill C. The role played by computer D. The use of new fuel in cars 60. The following statements are wrong EXCEPT ________ according to the text. A. The future world will be controlled by robots. B. People won’t be blind or deaf in the future. C. Fewer and fewer workers are needed in the future in factories. D. Scientists have the right to clone people of different kinds. 41—44 BDCC 45—48 BCAD 49--52 ADDB 53—56 ACBD 57—60 ADCC
