Tourists have long enjoyed feeding the birds. As a result, the pigeon has grown and grown. But local officials say all those droppings are not good for the buildings or the people in the square. As of this month, police will fine people who feed the pigeons. But a listener named Phillip Ghee has another thought about how to control pigeon populations. He says, why not catch the birds and export them to poor areas to supply protein(蛋白质) to people in danger of starvation? In any case, we put the question to two squab(雏鸽) producers. Tony Barwick is president of the Palmetto Pigeon Plant in South Carolina. He says that besides any questions about health risks, including from pollution, adult pigeons are not that easy to catch. And, he says, exporting them would not be as cost-effective(划算的) as exporting other forms of protein, such as chicken. Suppose you have a dollar, he says, you could buy a processed chicken that offers more meat. Bob Shipley is president of the Squab Producers of California. He says exporting smoked squab would not be a solution either. In the smoking process, squab meat becomes very soft. The meat also breaks down if it is overcooked. And there is something else to consider about raising pigeons as a food source. Generally it takes more than three and a half kilograms of grain to get half a kilogram of meat. 31. There’re more and more pigeons in Saint Mark’s Square mainly because_______. A. pigeons like to live in the historic buildings B. tourists set their pigeons free there C. it’s a place that’s suitable for pigeons D. people give them enough foods 32. The underlined word ―droppings‖ in Paragraph 1 refers to _______. A. waste of birds B. pigeons C. feathers of birds D. foods tourists throw away 33. By giving us an example, Tony Barwick means that________ A. exporting pigeons can make lots of money B. exporting pigeons would cost too much C. pigeons are not healthy food D. chicken has more meat 34. From the text we know ________ with Phillip Ghee’s opinion A. both Tony Barwick and Bob Shipley don’t agree B. either Tony Barwick of Bob Shipley agrees C. neither Tony Barwick nor Bob Shipley agrees D. Tony Barwick and Bob Shipley partly agree B One of the most fascinating things about television is the size of the audience. A novel can be on the ―best seller‖ lists with a sale of up to 100,000 copies, but a popular TV show might have 70 million TV viewers. TV can make anything or anyone well-known overnight. This is the principle behind ―quiz‖ or ―game‖ shows, which put ordinary people on TV to play a game for prizes and money. A quiz show can make anyone a star, and it can give away thousands of dollars. Charles Van Doren, an English instructor, became rich and famous after winning money on several shows. He even had a career as a television personality. But one of the losers proved that Charles Van Doren was cheating. It turned out that the show’s producers, who were pulling the strings, gave the answers to the most popular contestants beforehand. Why? Because if the audience didn’t like the person who won the game, they turned the show off. The result of this cheating was a huge scandal(丑闻). Based on the show off, a movie titled ―Quiz Show‖ is on 40 years later. Charles Van Doren is no longer involved with TV. But game shows are still here, though they aren’t taken seriously. In fact, some of them try to be as ridiculous as possible. There are shows that send strangers on vacation trips together, or that try to cause newly-married couples to fight on TV, or that punish losers by humiliating(羞辱) them. The entertainment now is to see what people will do just to be on TV. People still win money, but the real prize is to be in front of an audience of millions. 35. What is the most important thing as to television? A. How many viewers they can attract B. Becoming the best seller on the list C. How much money can be given away D. The number of people attending shows 36. What does the underlined part ―pulling the strings‖ (in Paragraph 2) probably mean? A. Planning the shows with effort B. Drawing the curtain on the stage C. Controlling the result secretly D. Playing ―quiz‖ or ―game‖ openly 37. Charles Van Doren stopped his career as a television personality because _______. A. he had earned enough wealth and fame. B. one of the participants had told the truth C. the film ―Quiz Show‖ was being shown D. his frequent appearance had bored the audience 38. It can be inferred from the passage that _______. A. TV Game Shows are more popular than before. B. the scandal was not made known until 40 years later C. getting money is the only purpose of people taking part in shows D. people can make themselves famous by taking part in shows C Visiting London can be an expensive trip, so establishing a budget(预算) and finding bargains when you arrive will help you get around London on the cheap. You can use a street map, or an online map search engine, to establish where in the city you will be staying and the distance you are from the major tourist attractions you want to visit. , Find a local provider of Transport for London tickets or travel cards, since your first bargain purchase will be an Oyster Card. Traveling around London with an Oyster Card will give you access to the cheapest option of transportation methods and the Oyster Card is accepted citywide on buses, boats and the London Underground, known by the locals as ―the tube‖. , Seek out your nearest Tube Station. The Tube is the cheapest and most reliable form of transportation and runs from around 6 a.m. until around 1 a.m. ..., depending on the line or the station. When you find a tube station, you can easily locate the closest bus stop by using the comparison bus-tube maps at the station’s entrance. , Follow the Transport for London Tube Guide to your destinations and always plan ahead. Making a plan for transport will save you unnecessary expenses, wasted trips on the tube and doubling back on your journey . 39. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the passage? A. To introduce the public transport system in London. B. To show readers how to use the Oyster Card. C. To prove the subway in London is easy to use. D. Mandela was born on July 18, 1918. He grew up poor in a small South African village. At 9, he was adopted by his father’s friend. In school, Mandela learned about African history and his ancestors’ struggles with discrimination. He wanted to help his people. He later traveled to Johannesburg, where he studied law and opened the first black law office. He also joined the African National Congress, a group that fought for equality. In 1948, the government introduced apartheid(种族隔离 制度 关于办公室下班关闭电源制度矿山事故隐患举报和奖励制度制度下载人事管理制度doc盘点制度下载 ), which left the black with few economic opportunities. In response, Mandela traveled throughout South Africa and encouraged people to demonstrate against the government’s policies. He was arrested for organizing anti-government activities and eventually sentenced to life in prison. On February 11, 1990, South African president F.W. de Klerk released Mandela from prison, and the two worked together to end apartheid. Three years later, they won the Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts. In 1994, for the first time in South African history, blacks were allowed to vote in the election. Mandela was elected president by an overwhelming(压倒性的) majority. While in office, he worked to improve housing, education, and economic opportunities for the country’s large black population. Mandela stepped down as president in 1999. That same year, he created the Nelson Mandela’s Children Fund, a charity that helps poor South African children. ―Children are the wealth of our country,‖ he said in an interview with TFK in 2002.‖ They must be given love. Over the years, Mandela continued working to promote peace around the world. In 2007, he helped found The Elders, an organization of world leaders committed to ending conflicts and promoting human rights. ―When you want to get a herd(兽群) to move in a certain direction,‖ he told Time in 1994,‖ you stand at the back with a stick. Then a few of the more energetic cattle move to the front and the rest of the cattle follow. You are really guiding them from behind. That is how a leader should do his work. 43. What is the second paragraph mainly about? A. The early life of Mandela. B. The first job Mandela did. C. The education Mandela received. D. The beginning of Mandela’s political career. 44. Mandela traveled around South Africa in order to _________ A. find good economic opportunities B. call on the black to fight for equality C. seek support for the government’s policies D. encourage people to join the African National Congress 45. What is the correct order of the following events? a.Mandela was released from prison. b.Mandela helped to found The Elders. c.Mandela became president of South Africa. d.The Nelson Mandela’s children Fund was set up. In the last paragraph, Mandela talked about __________ A. how to raise animals B. how to follow others C. the skills to be a leader D. his experience as a shepherd. E How much electricity do you use? These days everyone is worried about the size of their carbon footprint. In order to reduce global warming we need to make our carbon footprints smaller. But how much CO2 are we responsible for? A new book by Mike Berners Lee (a leading expert in carbon footprint) might be able to help. How Bad are Bananas? The Carbon Footprint of Everything looks at the different things we do and buy, and calculates the amount of CO2 all of the following created: the ingredients, the electricity used in the brewery, the equipment, the travel and commuting of the beer, and the packaging. It’s amazing how many different things need to be included in each calculation. And it’s frightening how much carbon dioxide everything produces. But all of this can help us decide which beer to drink. From Berners-Lee’s calculations, it’s clear that a pint (568ml) of locally-brewed beer has a smaller carbon footprint than a bottle of imported beer. This is because the imported beer has been transported from far away, and it uses more packaging. The local beer only produces 300g of CO2, but the imported beer produces 900g! So, one pint of local beer is better for the environment than three cans of cheap foreign lager(贮藏啤酒) from the supermarket. Berners-Lee has even calculated the carbon footprint of cycling to work. Nothing is more environmentally-friendly than riding a bike, surely? Well, it depends on what you’ve had to eat before. To ride a bike we need energy and for energy we need food. So if we eat a banana and then ride a kilometer and a half, our footprint is 65g of CO2. However, if we eat bacon before the bike ride, it’s 200g. In fact, bananas are good in general because they don’t need packaging, they can be transported by boat and they grow in natural sunlight. So, does this mean that cycling is bad for the environment? Absolutely not, for a start, if you cycle, you don’t use your car, and the fewer cars on the road, the fewer traffic jams. And cars in traffic jams produce three times more CO2 than cars traveling at speed. Cycling also makes you healthy and less likely to go to a hospital. And hospitals have very big carbon footprints! So maybe it’s time for us all to start making some changes. Pass me a banana and a pint of local beer, please. 47. According to Berners-Lee, which of the following produces the most carbon dioxide, A. A pint of imported beer we drink. B. A pint of local beer we drink. C. The bacon we eat before a bike ride. D. A banana we eat before a bike ride. 48. The underlined word ―brewery‖ in Paragraph 2 most probably means ―________‖ A. one of the things from which beer is made B. a machine which makes beer C. a container where beer is stored D. a factory where beer is made 49. To make our carbon footprints smaller, we should often ___________. A. calculate the amount of CO2 B. cycle to work C. drink more local beer D. buy cheap things from the supermarkets 0. What’s the most suitable title for the passage? 5 A. The Carbon Footprint of Everything B. Starting to Make Changes C. Bikes, Beer and Bananas D. I have used toothpaste for years as a cleaning product. ,2,You have probably heard, or have tried toothpaste for pimples(小脓包). Toothpaste is a popular method these days for cleaning up occasional pimple. However, I have not found this to be very effective. Believe it or not, you can use it on your jewelry and it works just as well as the jewelry cleaners. I use an old toothbrush and gently brush the toothpaste all over the jewelry. I let it set while coated in the toothpaste. I leave it overnight and then wash it off. It comes out shinning like it did the day it was purchased! ,4,If you have children in the home, you know how hard it is to clean crayon(蜡 笔) off the walls. No need to repaint because toothpaste and a washcloth will take it right off. I also use it to clean my shower and bath. When used with toothpaste, you can get into those tiny little scratches and turn them back to bright white again! ,5,Toothpaste will take the hurt out of burns. I get burned by my hair iron regularly and the only thing I have found to take the pain away is toothpaste. You only have to let it sit on the burn!
