review of love of life The Review of Love of Life Love of Life, written by Jack London, tells a story about a man of his strong will and tough experience to save himself. Deserted by his companion--Bill,the leading character in this novel tried every method to keep alive in the aweful and miserable environment. Finally, he was saved by scientific expedition whale ship Bedford. In this novel, the author gives vivid descriptions of the natural environment of the desert. The whole scenery of the desert is symbol of hopeless and despair in the novel. “He crawled up a small knoll and surveyed the prospect. There were no trees, no bushes, nothing but a gray sea of moss scarcely diversified by gray rocks, gray lakelets, and gray streamlets. The sky was gray. There was no sun nor hint of sun”. The dim daylight, the bleak view, the ground covered by mosses, are all settings for creating a cruel and crude environment. In such a tough situation, the hero tried unbelievable ways of feeding himself and fighting his way out. It must be a strong belief that supported him to grip on the rope of life. He had to struggle to fight with a sick wolf, with wisdom."Had it been a well wolf, it would not have mattered so much to the man; but the thought of going to feed the maw of that loathsome and all but dead thing was repugnant to him. He was finicky. His mind had begun to wander again, and to be perplexed by hallucinations, while his lucid intervals grew rarer and shorter." It is interesting that even the hero had thought of death, but he refused to feed the ugly, weak, dying wolf. He had his own judgement of dignity, as he preferred to lose to a powerful enemy with respect, instead of one he could not bear as a winner over him. Such a value urged him to survive, to survive the sick wolf, to survive in such a tough environment. It's hard to say what he should be grateful to, the innate strong will for life, the dignity of no surrender to a unrespectable rival, a sick wolf. "He was awaken once from a faint by a wheeze close in his ear.The wolf leaped lamely back, losing its footing and falling in its weakness. It was ludicrous, but he was not amused. Nor was he even afraid. He was too far gone for that."I have already admired the hero for the skills he had shown of keeping alive. However, none of the moment had I been so shocked as he killed the wolfed . Exhausted and weak as he was, he laid as if he was dead, to lure the wolf to come to him, to attack the wolf out of expectation. Finally, the wisdom and patience of human prevailed. He drank the blood of the wolf, and got the energy and confidence to survive, in a true meaning. At the end of the story, the man won the struggle against the tough, miserable nature. Due to his strong will of keeping alive, he got rescued by the scientific expedition whale ship Bedford. The author has taken much of energy to describe the awful natural condition in the desert to expose the theme, that is the power of life is limitless. Through this kind of sharp contrast, the author has given us a vivid display of toughness of life. Life is precious and cheerful. But we, mortal human being, have only one chance. In Love of Life, Jack London not only shows the power of life, but also inteprets the spirit of never giving up.
