Educational institutions have a responsibility to dissuade students from pursuing fields of study in which they are unlikely to succeed. There’s an ancient Chinese saying goes as, educators, to educate, to teach, and to answer. No matter the educational institutions or the stuff in them, what they should be doing is to get people informed of things and inspire them, rather than to stop or dissuade them to pursue, unless they’re doing something illegal or immoral. So in this case of pursuing fields of stud y, I don’t support this statement. Nobody is 100 percent sure about whether a person will succeed in the fields of study in the future, and sometimes, even though the people around give little positive commends, there’re still possibilities that they will be successful and there’re still cases in which the hero just doesn’t give up and go against others’ wills and finally make it. This is because that the judgment and recommendations are all subjective, and they’re made by people, the human beings. There’r e so much discrepancies among every individual and so are their evaluate system, and sometimes two different parties can even give out opposite opinions. And what an educational institution should do is to provide a wider range of space and stronger powe r for a person to get prepared to pursue what they’re interested in. So dissuading people to do what they seem not likely to succeed is obviously a mistake. Some people may say that the educational institutions are different from normal people since they’re more professional and experienced in telling people what they’re good at. However, this claim is actually an imaginary theory. Let’s see the instance of ancient Greece’s debater, Demosthenes. He stuttered seriously when he spoke, and nobody believed he could be a good talker, let alone speaker, but the results turned out to be ironic for these people. And Langlang, the famous Chinese pianist was once kicked out of his piano courses being called untalented, but who could ever say this again regarding his success for now. The educational institutions judge people by their outside features like their characters, bodies and hobbies or their inside personalities and spirits. But these things can all be changed and nothing can be sure after these alters. And ignoring these changes that could be possible to happen and dissuading people to stop pursuing is unreasonable. Educational institutions are organizations to make people more likely to succeed rather than to cut their roads on the way half. They should be giving evaluations and recommendations, but shouldn’t be making the decisions for the people educated by them.
