5th Grade Advanced Math Curriculum
The Fifth Grade Math Program is designed with the goal that students would learn and remember various computation and problem solving skills and basic number theory that build a strong foundation in mathematics. It is taught incrementally with continued practice, helping to ensure that students will not forget them.
Numbers
Students will:
• Count sequences and whole numbers
• Write and identify digits and place value through hundred
millions
• Know even and odd numbers
• Write dollars and cents
• Read and write whole numbers in expanded notation
• Identify prime numbers
• Recognize negative numbers
Addition
Students will:
• Add one digit numbers
• Solve missing numbers in addition
• Solve "some and some more" word problems and know the
addition algorithm
• Add dollars and cents
Subtraction
Students will:
• Know subtraction facts and fact families
• Solve missing numbers in subtraction
• Solve "some, went away" word problems and know the
subtraction algorithm
• Subtract dollars and cents
• Solve larger, smaller, difference word problems
Multiplication
Students will:
• Know the multiplication facts
• Multiply to perform repeated addition
• Multiply one digit numbers (2+ factors)
• Multiply two digit numbers
• Multiply three digit numbers
• Solve missing numbers in multiplication
• Solve equal groups stories and know the multiplication
algorithm
• List factors of whole numbers
• Multiply by multiples of 10 and 100
• Estimate answers involving multiplication
• Find the greatest common factor of two numbers
• Find the least common multiple of two numbers
Division
Students will:
• Learn the terms divisor, dividend, and quotient
• Know the division facts and algorithm
• Learn three ways to show division

• Simplify decimals
• Round decimals to the nearest whole number

Percents
Students will:
• Use percents to name part of a group
• Write a percent as a fraction
• Learn about probability and chance
Problem Solving
Students will:
• Know the order of operations
• Read and write time from a clock
• Solve word problems involving fractions and percents
• Read and write lengths (customary and metric)
• Convert/simplify units of length, weight, mass, and liquid
measures
• Solve problems using the directions of a compass
• Solve word problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
Geometry
Students will:
• identify and define: point, ray, line, angle, acute angle, obtuse angle, right angle, straight angle, polygon, quadrilateral, square,
parallelogram, trapezoid, rhombus, triangle, pentagram, hexagon, octagon, parts of a circle, types of prisms and pyramids, cone, sphere, cylinder.
