Huge Kite
An extremely large kite made its first public appearance at the Bristol International Kite Festival in the UK in September, 2011.
The kite was larger than a full-size foot-ball field and owned by the Al Farsi family of Kuwait. They traveled especially from Kuwait to take part in the festival. At the festival the kite team flew the kite and hoped to set a new official World Record.
The distance between the ends of the wings of the kite measured over 55 meters wide. It had a body length of over 40 meters and a tail of some 80 meters. Once filled with air the new kite required two huge tools to fix it to the ground. To break the World Record, the kite was officially measured in Bristol for the first time and was required to fly for at least 20 minutes.
With a lifting area of 1,200 m2 the kite was clearly larger than the World Record holder which had a lifting area of 1,019 m2. It was also owned by the Al Farsi family who has held the Guinness World Record since 2005. It was successfully flown in Bristol in 2004.
The Bristol International Kite Festival was first celebrated in 1986. Now it attracts thousands of visitors from all over the world to enjoy colorful kites in the sky of Bristol every September.
