The Old Man and the Sea
The Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway's most immortal works. The
book has become one of the classics.
It is a story about an old fisherman called Santiago who made a living by fishing alone in a skiff in the Gulf Stream. He finally fished a fish after eighty-four days later. The fish was so big that it dragged the boat drifting for two days. Then, he stabbed it and tied the fish on the boat. However, when returning to the port, he came across sharks. As a result, the shark ate the fish. Thus, the old man carried the fish’s skeleton
to reach home but was admired by people.
First, the sentences of this story are very simple and have a number of short dialogues. Many of them are concise declarative sentences. Sentences are connected by “and”, it is easier for me to read.
Then, The Old Man and the Sea is a typical sample that illustrates the
relationship between the man and the nature. There are many such literatures in American literature. For example, he fought with Marlin, he felt guilty when he killed the shark. The shark was not only his brothers but also his enemy. The shark accompanied him spending the long night also they ate the fish. The relationship between them is very contradictive. People want to conquer the nature, but was punished by it.
Third, the old man was badly hurt when he fished the fish, but he persisted in. Maybe Hemingway wants to convey a message that how a person achieved success out of a bad environment. Therefore, the story implied a religious metaphor as well. The author added some Christian symbols and figure of speech inconspicuously.
The little boy also played an important role in this story. He gave the old man confidence and helped him a lot, giving him the food and the bait. When the old man was on voyage, he missed the boy very much. He often said to himself: “I wish I had
the boy. To help me and to see this…”
Also we knew the voyage is very lonely but he was very optimistic. The old man always said to himself: “if the others heard me talking about loud they would think
that I am crazy. But since I am not crazy, I don’t care.” He didn’t remember when he
had first started to talk aloud, when alone, when the boy left. He thought: “I keep
them with precision. Only I have no luck any more. But who know? Maybe today. Every day is a new day. It is better to be lucky. but I would rather be exact. Then the luck comes you are ready.”
In my opinion, this novel tells not only a moving plot, but also lays special emphasis on moral meanings that are full of the symbol of badge. The spirit that the old man possessed impressed me deeply.
