Deposit composite matrix with a depositor or chopper gun

Purpose People credited with this unit standard are able to deposit composite matrix
with a depositor or chopper gun by taking the required safety precautions,
calibrating equipment, loading and cleaning the machine, and depositing to
the laminate specification.

1 Definitions
Equipment refers to applicators, dispensers, measuring devices, cutters and cleaning
utensils.
Process specification refers to the documented order and method of applying the
materials to manufacture the item (time, materials, temperature, and application
rates).
Product specification refers to the documented requirements of the manufactured
item.
Worksite procedures refer to the documented procedures for the machine and
worksite.

2 All worksite procedures must meet recognised codes of practice such as the Code of
Practice for Health and Safety in the Manufacture of Composites Based on Synthetic
Resins (Fibreglass), 1998. This code, and other relevant codes of practice, are
available from the Composites Association of New Zealand, PO Box 75 345,

They include obligations required under current legislation. All worksite procedures
must also meet documented worksite safety procedures (where these exceed the
code) for personal, product and worksite safety.
3 The deposited laminate produced for this unit standard must include external and
internal angles, and concave and convex surfaces.
Elements and performance criteria
Element 1
Carry out specified safety precautions while depositing a composite matrix with a depositor or chopper gun.
Performance criteria
1.1 Materials are handled according to safety data sheet recommendations and the
code of practice.
1.2 Safety equipment is used according to worksite procedures.
1.3 Safety precautions are carried out according to the equipment manufacturer's
recommendations.
Element 2
Calibrate depositer or chopper gun and test matrix.
Performance criteria
2.1 Test result matches laminate specification.
2.2 Controls are adjusted to calibration requirements of equipment.
2.3 Controls are adjusted according to equipment manufacturer's recommendations
and process specification recommendations.
Element 3
Load and clean depositor or chopper gun.
Performance criteria
3.1 Materials meet laminate specification.

3.2 Materials are loaded into machine according to manufacturer's

4.1 Laminate meets specification requirements.
4.2 Materials are stored according to worksite procedures.
Please note
Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
