Professional Business Chart in Excel: How to Alternate “Plot Area” Background[Notice: The chart is created on Excel 2010]
The "Business Week" has given us many cool examples about what are BUSINESS charts. These charts are much too professional and all of us want to create them in our daily report. We will start a series of posts to create these professional charts step by step via the most common used software - Microsoft Excel. Let’s begin with the above business week’s example. The question is How to alternate plot area with colorful
bands in Excel. In fact, we have at least two methods to solve this issue. But in this post, we only introduce one of them. (If you are interesting about the other one, please send me a mail.)
In this method, we will use an auxiliary data sequence to simulate interlaced colorful bands. Even though this method is a little technique, it is not too difficult. We only need 7 steps.
Prerequest: Suppose we have two data sequences and one legend sequence. We add an auxiliary column D
and fill with 0,1,0,1… for colorful bands.
1.Insert a blank 2D-Bar chart into your worksheet
2.Select the auxiliary data sequence and press Ctrl+C to copy data to clipboard. Then click the blank chart to
select it and press Ctrl+V. Two bars will display in this chart like the following picture. 3.[Key step] Convert the auxiliary data sequence into some interlaced coloring bands.
3.1Change the Values Order and Maximum Value of “Primary Horizontal Axis”.
3.2 Change the Show Direction of “Primary Vertical Axis”.
4.Change the Default Gap of the auxiliary data sequence. Select auxiliary series on chart and right click to
launch context menu. Choose “Format Data Series…” and change “Gap width” to 0.
5.Add real data sequence now. Select the second column and press Ctrl+C to copy it to clipboard. Select
chart again and press Ctrl+V. The second data sequence will be added into chart. But the current chart is
some confusion.
6.Select the new added series and click right button. Then select “Change Series Chart Type…” from the
context menu and choose 2D-Column as target chart type. The chart will change as the following picture.
Now you can add more series and change the gap width of them back to 90% or something. A draft column
chart with alternated background appears.
7.Insert a “Rectangle” shape into chart as title and then apply a different color & theme from business week
style library to make it more professional such as changing “Chart Area” color to gray, changing “Plot Area”
color to gray too and changing “Data Series” color to dark blue. Great, I can finish this post now!The finial chart looks like:
