Nina Khrushcheva, Granddaughter of Former Soviet Leader Nikita Khrushchev, to Speak at Texas Tech International Cultural Center
Nina Khrushcheva, an Associate Professor at The New School, will be speaking about the current political situation in Russia April 8 at 5:30 pm on the Texas Tech Campus.
Nina Khrushcheva, the granddaughter of the Soviet Union premier, Nikita Khrushchev, will be speaking about the current political situation in Russia 5:30 pm Thursday April 8 at the Texas Tech University International Cultural Center (ICC). The title of the talk is “The Byzantium Influence on Russian Modernity.” The Putin and Medvedev presidencies will be discussed. The lecture is sponsored by The CH Foundation, the TTU
Office of International Affairs, the TTU Russian Club, the Departments of History and Political Science.
Nina L. Khrushcheva is Associate Professor in the Graduate Program of International Affairs at The New School and senior fellow of the World Policy Institute. She is also an editor of and a contributor to Project Syndicate: Association of Newspapers Around the World. She received her Ph.D. from Princeton University, worked for two years as a research fellow at the School of Historical Studies of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton and then served as Deputy Editor of East European Constitutional Review at the NYU School of Law. She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. Dr. Khrushcheva’s articles have appeared in The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post,
The New York Times, The Nation, The Wall Street Journal, International Herald Tribune,
Financial Times and other international publications. She is the author of Imagining
Nabokov: Russia Between Art and Politics, and is currently working on a new book 1project “Russia’s Gulag of the Mind.”
Nina Khrushcheva’s grandfather Nikita Khrushchev served as the Premier of the Soviet
Union from 1958-1964. He is perhaps best remembered in America for banging his shoe during a 1960 meeting at the UN. Possibly equally well-known is Khrushchev’s oft-
misunderstood quote, “We will bury you,” given during a speech on peaceful co-
existence between the West and the Soviet Union. Rather than threatening physical war, Khrushchev was actually expressing his belief that the communist system would replace capitalism.
