The Great Gatsby 1. Analysis of the teaching materials The literature we taught is an American novel The Great Gatsby which is written by Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald. The story primarily concerns the young and mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby and his quixotic passion and obsession for the beautiful former debutante Daisy Buchanan. Through the tragedy of Gatsby, the novel mainly explores themes of the disillusion of American Dream. From learning this novel, students will know about the background information of that time and be more interested in learning American literature. 2. Analysis of the students Since the students are studying in college, they have read and learned some literary works, so they know how to study literature on their own. But their English levels are various from each other, thus, the teaching design should be stratified from easy points to difficult points to help students get knowledge. In order to arouse students’interest, teachers should design different tasks for students to carry out. 3. Teaching aims: (1). Knowledge aim A. Lead students to learn the background knowledge such as the End of the First World War, the Jazz Age, Prohibition and the American Dream. B. Lead students learn about the use of symbolism. (2). Ability aim A. Improve the students’ability of analyzing and solving problems such as analyze the character. B. Improve the students’ spoken English and reading skills such as summarizing. (3). Emotion aim A. Arouse students’ great interest in American culture. B. Lead students to build correct world outlook, the outlook on life and values. 4. Teaching method (1).Task-based language teaching. Design different tasks for students to carry out. There will be group works and personal speaking, such as the discussion about why Gatsby is great. (2). Audio-visual teaching methods Use multi-media to show some parts of the movie—the Great Gatsby, to lead in the topic and arouse students’ interest. 5. Teaching key point Analyze people’s relationship and their characters. 6. Teaching difficult point Understand three main symbols in the novel. 7. Teaching procedures Step 1 Lead in Show students a short video of the movie The Great Gatsby, and then ask them the following questions: (1) Do you know which novel that the movie is adapted from? (2) Have you ever read this novel? (3) Do you know the author and background information of the novel? (Purpose: Lead in the lesson naturally and arouse their interest in learning the novel.) Step 2 Background introduction Show students a short video also selected from the movie The Great Gatsby which mainly describes the society at that time, and then introduce some information about the end of the WWⅠ, the Jazz Age, the Prohibition and the American Dream. (Purpose: Introduce some important background information for students to make sure that they can learn the novel better.) Step3: Character introduction 1. Let students recall the names of the main characters. 2. Ask one of the students to finish the context diagram. 3. Introduce the main characters one by one. (Purpose: This step is to check if the students have read the book in advance and to give them a basic introduction of the main characters. In this way, students will be encouraged to study consciously, and they will be well prepared for the next steps.) Step4:Analysis of characters in the Great Gatsby 1. Gatsby’s character (1)Summarize Gatsby’s character according to the facts listed below. For example, “he held many luxurious parties only to attract her to visit there and met her again…” (2)Summarize all his characters and then ask what else characters does he have. (Purpose: in this way, students can learn to summarize and find out the characters by themselves.) 2. Daisy’s character (1) Find out facts about these descriptions. I will list Daisy’s characters and ask them to find out relevant facts. (Purpose: through finding out facts, students can be more familiar with the novel and have a better understanding. And this is different from the previous one, so it can make the practice colorful.) 3. Nick’s character Discuss with your partner about Nike’s character and find out facts to support your idea. (Purpose: since they have known how to analyze one’s character, they can finish this task by themselves and put this method into practice.) 4. Wilson’s character Analyze him by myself. His character includes obedient, coward, negative and desperate. (Purpose: he is not the main character and not so important, so I can analyze it for them. And by using a different way from the previous, I can make it colorful. Step5: Discussion Why is Gatsby great? (Purpose: discussion is a good chance for students to think deeply so as to develop their creativity. At the same time, it can help students cultivate their cooperative spirit) Step6: Symbols With the help of pictures and the original sentences in the novel, guide students to understand the meaning of three symbols. (Purpose: train student’s ability of analysis and help them understand the novel better.) Step7: Theme Ask students a question: Do you know the theme of this novel? If you don’t know, then I will explain them one by one. 1. The disillusion of wealth 2. The disillusion of love 3. The disillusion of status (Purpose: help students to understand the theme deeper and more clearly.) Step8: Homework Look for the information about the China Dream and then write a passage to talk about your opinion about it. (Purpose: our country has raised the concept of China Dream, so I think this homework can help students to broaden their horizons.)
