The Functions of My organization
I am working for the local government, and the official translation for my department is “Bureau of letters and calls”. But I think another one is better. It’s “Bureau of visits, letters and calls”. That is because the functions of my organization are as followings:
Firstly, we are responsible for the reception of petitioners, or we deal with the masses of people who are coming to complain about the government. Well, petitions are getting different means and forms in China. People are coming to visit the specific agency—like my office, to tell their complaints instead of to gathered in the street. Secondly, we are responsible for the dealing of people coming for ask for help or interpretation of policies and regulations made by the government. Thirdly, we need to deal with the petition cases transferred from the higher authorities.
Instead of coming to visit directly, petitioners can also take the way of witting letters, giving us calls or express their complains on line. But the visit in person are most directly and accounting for a large proportion. And dealing with the visit petitioners is the largest and most important part of our work. That’s why I am insisting the translation of my organization is “Bureau of visits, letters and calls”.
