I Analysis of teaching material
The topic of this unit is the great scientists, so all the languages and material are designed to serve it. This passage is mainly about a great doctor-- John Snow and his great contribution to defeat cholera. It is the most important part in this unit and it tells students the qualities and great contribution of John Snow.
II Analysis of students
This is the first unit of the book, and students just go back from their holiday. So, it’s
very important to attract students’ attention on study. Students may learn something
about science and scientists on TV during their holiday, but they don't have too much knowledge about the topic. So, this unit will introduce something about them. it is also very important for students to learn the qualities of great scientists. So, students need to pay more attention to this topic.

1.Background information of John Snow and the passage.
John Snow was born in 1813 and worked as a doctor in Great Britain. He was originally an anesthetist. He was so famous that he became the personal doctor for Queen Victoria. Four outbreaks of cholera in the 1830s and 1840s killed many people in England. In 1854, the most terrible outbreak of cholera which ever occurred in the kingdom began. It was so violent and sudden that 127 people died in the first three days.
2. What kinds of disease cholera is?

Symptom: severe vomit and diarrhea
Aftereffect: die quickly from a loss of liquid
