英语关于二战的演讲 Changes in the balance of power over the past 500 years have regularly preceded war’s outbreak. For this reason, the relationship between the great powers’ rise and fall and global instability is a core concern in theories of world politics. The Cold War, a hostile rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union, lasted from the late 1940s until the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. The Cold War defined both countries' foreign policies through the second half of the twentieth century, as Americans and Soviets competed for allies to maintain and widen their respective spheres of influence around the world. The reasons can be divided into the following points. The Soviet Union wanted to spread its ideology of communism worldwide, which alarmed the Americans who followed democracy. Next, the acquisition of atomic weapons by America caused fear in the Soviets. Both countries feared an attack from each other. Then, the Soviet Union’s action of taking control over Eastern Europe was a major factor for US suspicions. And the US President had a personal dislike of the Soviet leader Josef Stalin. Also, America was annoyed by the Soviet Union’s actions in the part of Germany it had occupied. The Soviets feared that America would use Western Europe as a base to attack it. The consequences of the Cold War are involved many aspects. First, both the United States of America and the Soviet Union built up huge arsenals of atomic weapons and ballistic missiles. And the military blocs NATO and The Warsaw Pact were formed during that period. It also led to destructive conflicts like the Vietnam War and the Korean War. Even more, The Soviet Union collapsed due to economic weaknesses. For German, the Berlin Wall was demolished and the two German nations were unified. The Warsaw Pact disintegrated. The Baltic States and some former Soviet republics achieved independence. From the view of America, it became the sole superpower of the world. At the same time, communism collapsed worldwide. However, it did not escalate to an apocalyptic World War III. The decade-long impasse between American capitalists and Soviet Communists ceased on a nonviolent mutual consent. A decade after the cold war ended, policy makes and academics foresaw a new era of peace and prosperity, an era in which democracy and open trade would healed ”the end of history” . The Soviet Union’s demise spelled the end of Russia as a European Great Power, although post-soviet Russia remains a major European state and a power among others. However, for most of people, great power politics are tragic because the international system requires states to seek dominance at one another’s expense, dooming even peaceful nations to a relentless power struggle.
