2) The location is downtown. 3) It has a nice view of the city. 4) It offers first class comfort and service. 5) The food there isn’t expensive. 6) It’s a little expensive, but very nice. 7) It’s very convenient, and it’s not expensive. It’s a great place. 8) It is well known for seafood dishes. 9) The food is of good quality and well prepared. 10) The service staff is always friendly, polite, and helpful. 11) The restaurant is always spotlessly clean. 12) It is situated near the university. 13) It offers a variety of food and drinks. , Taking orders 1) What can I get for you? 3) What will you have today, Mr. Wang? 4) Are you ready to order, madam? 6) Anything else? 7) Will that be all? 8) Is this to go? (食物打包) 9) For here or to go? 10) Cash or charge? 11) Here’s the menu. 12) What do you recommend? 13) How about seafood with fried noodles and vegetables? 14) Two orders of fried fish, one large order of chips are not enough for two kids. May I take your order? B: Can I have two cheeseburgers? A: Two cheeseburgers. With everything? B: Yes, please. A: For here, or to go? B: For here. A: Anything else? B: French fries. A: Regular, medium, or large? B: Large. A: Would you like ketchup(番茄酱), sir? B: Yeah. , Example 2: A: Some pepper? B: Yeah. A: Anything to drink with that? B: I’d like a chocolate shake(巧克力奶昔). A: Sure. Large, medium, or small? B: Large. A: Will that be all? B: Yes. A: That will be $ 4.31 please. B: Here you are. A: Thank you. 3. Dave: Here you go. A half-caf(咖啡因), half-decaf(无咖啡因), low-fat latte(拿铁咖啡). Enjoy! Next, please… Emi: Hi, Dave. Dave: Oh, hi, Emi. What can I get for you? Emi: I’d like a tuna fish sandwich. Dave: For here, or to go? Emi: For here. Dave: Sure. What kind of bread would you like? Emi: Bread? Whole wheat(全麦面包), I guess. Dave: Sorry, we don’t have any whole wheat. How about white or rye(黑麦)? Emi: White is fine. Why are there so many choices? Examples from CET4: about food 1) M: I’m thinking about where to go for a bite tonight. W: Oh, Oh, you know these things will ruin your health, too much fat and sugar, how about ordering some vegetables and fruit instead? Q: Where does the conversation most probably take place? (2006-6: 15) 5. Rush (Translated by Zhu Chunshen) Swallows may have gone, but there is a time of return; willow trees may have died back, but there is a time of regreening; peach blossoms may have fallen, but they will bloom again. Now, you the wise, tell me, why should our days leave us, never to return? - If they had been stolen by someone, who could it be? Where could he hide them? If they had made the escape themselves, then where could they stay at the moment? I don’t know how many days I have been given to spend, but I do feel my hands are getting empty. Taking stock silently, I find that more than eight thousand days have already slid away from me. Like a drop of water from the point of a needle disappearing into the ocean, my days are dripping into the stream of time, soundless, traceless. Already sweat is starting on my forehead, and tears welling up in my eyes. Those that have gone have gone for good, those to come keep coming; yet in between, how fast is the shift, in such a rush? When I get up in the morning, the slanting sun marks its presence in my small room in two or three oblongs. The sun has feet, look, he is treading on, lightly and furtively; and I am caught, blankly, in his revolution. Thus--the day flows away through the sink when I wash my hands, wears off in the bowl when I eat my meal, and passes away before my day-dreaming gaze as reflect in silence. I can feel his haste now, so I reach out my hands to hold him back, but he keeps flowing past my withholding hands. In the evening, as I lie in bed, he strides over my body, glides past my feet, in his agile way. The moment I open my eyes and meet 大学英语第二教研室编制 2012级《大学英语》2012-2013-2第二学期口语诵读材料 the sun again, one whole day has gone. I bury my face in my hands and heave a sigh. But the new day begins to past in the sigh. What can I do, in this bustling world, with my days flying in their escape? Nothing but to hesitate, to rush. What have I been doing in that eight-thousand-day rush, apart from hesitating? Those bygone days have been dispersed as smoke by a light wind, or evaporated as mist by the morning sun. What traces have I left behind me? Have I ever left behind any gossamer traces at all? I have come to the world, stark naked; am I to go back, in a blink, in the same stark nakedness? It is not fair though: why should I have made such a trip for nothing! You the wise, tell me, why should our days leave us, never to return, Unit 2 What a Weekend 1. , Asking About Vacation 1) Did you have a good time on your vacation? 2) How was your weekend/holiday? 3) Where were you? 4) What did you do? 5) Who did you go with? 6) How did you get there? 7 )Where did you guys stay? , Talking About Sightseeing 1) Italy is a great country. 2) The Great Wall is a great attraction for visitors. 3) Vienna is the city song. Tell your partner about your trip. A: Where was your last vacation? B: I went to in Beijing. A: Oh, wow! Tell me about your trip? B: We did lots of sightseeing(观光) and ate lots of local food. A: Did you have a good time? B: Oh, yeah. It was great! How about your last vacation? A: … 3. Ana: Hi, Chris. How was your weekend? Chris: Boring. I was at home all weekend. How about you? Ana: You know me, I’m never home on weekends! Chris: Where were you? Ana: I was in L.A. on Saturday and Sunday. Ana: Oh, yeah, it was great. But I spent way too much money. Chris: Who…who did you go with? Ana: Emi and Sam. Chris: Oh. How did you get there? Ana: We flew. Chris: Wasn’t that expensive? Ana: No. It was really cheap. Sam had these great discount coupons(折扣卷). Chris: Where did you guys stay? Ana: Oh, Sam has a brother in L.A. We stayed at his place. Chris: Ah. Wasn’t that … crowded? Ana: No. It was a lot of fun. You know, Chris, you ought to come with us next time. Chris: Hmm. Maybe. Examples from CET4: about activities 1) W: I really enjoyed the TV special about drafts last night. Did you get home in time to see it? W: Oh, yes, but I wish I could have stayed awake long enough to see the whole thing. Q: What does the man mean? (2011-12:12) 2) M: Finally, I’ve got the chance to put on my new suit tonight. I hope to make a good impression on your family. W: Come on! It’s only a family reunion. So jeans and T-shirts are just fine. Q: What does the woman mean? ( 2012-6:14) 3) M: Forgive the mess in here, we have a party last night. There were a lot of people and they all brought food. W: Yeah, I can tell. Well, I guess it’s pretty obvious what you’ll be doing most of today. Q: What does the woman think the man will do? (2010-6:13) 5. 例如,肯尼迪总统的名言“ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country”(不要问你的国家能为你做什么~要问你能为你的国家做什么。) First Inaugural Address We observe today not a victory of party, but a celebration of freedom, symbolizing an end, as well as a beginning; signifying renewal(重生), as well as change. For I have sworn(宣誓)before you and Almighty God the same solemn(庄严的) oath our forebears prescribed nearly a century and three quarters ago. In your hands, my fellow citizens, more than in mine, will rest the final success or failure of our course. Since this country was founded, each generation of Americans has been summoned to give testimony(宣言)to its national loyalty. The graves of young Americans who answered the call to service surround the globe. Now the trumpet summons us again, not as a call to bear arms(服兵役), though arms we need; not as a call to battle, though embattled we are; but a call to bear the burden of a long twilight struggle, year in and year out, ―rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation(苦难)‖,a struggle against the common enemies of man: tyranny(暴行), poverty, disease, and war itself. Can we forge against these enemies a grand and global alliance, North and South, East and West, that can assure a more fruitful life for all mankind? Will you join in that historic effort? In the long history of the world, only a few generations have been granted the role of defending freedom in its hour of maximum danger. I do not shrink(畏缩) from this responsibility. I welcome it. I do not believe that any of us would exchange places with any other people or any other generation. The energy, the faith, the devotion which we bring to this endeavor will light our country and all who serve it. And the glow from that fire can truly light the world. And so, my fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country. My fellow citizens of the world ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man. Finally, whether you are citizens of America or citizens of the world ask of us here the same high standards of strength and sacrifice which we ask of you. Examples from CET4: about feeling down 1) M: How is John now? Before I introduce our cultural programs, only tell you one thing first about 2008. You’re going to have a great time in Beijing. Many people are fascinated by China’s sport legends in the history. For example, back to Song Dynasty, which was the 11th century, people in our country started to play a game called Cuju, which is regarded as the origin of ancient football. The game was so popular that women were also participating. Now, you would probably understand why our women’s football team does so well today. There are a lot more wonderful and exciting events waiting for you in the New Beijing, a modern metropolisv (大都市) with 3,000 years of cultural treasures woven into the urban tapestry. Along with the iconic imagery of the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven and the Great Wall, the city also offers an endless mixture of theatres, museums, discos, all kinds of restaurants and shopping malls which will amaze and delight you. But beyond all that, this is a city of millions of friendly people who love to meet people from around the world. They believe if the 2008 Olympics is held in Beijing, it will help to enhance the harmony between our culture and diverse cultures of the world. And guarantee their gratitude will pour out in open expressions of affection for you and the great Movement that you guide. Within our cultural programs, education and communication will receive the highest priority. We seek to create an intellectual and sporting legacy by broadening the understanding of the Olympic Ideals throughout the country. Cultural events will unfold each year, from 2005 to 2008. We will stage multi-disciplined cultural programs, including concerts, exhibitions, art competitions and camps which will involve young people from around the world. During the Olympics, these activities will also be held in the Olympic Village and in the city for the benefit of the athletes. Our Ceremonies will give China’s greatest-and the world’s greatest artists a chance to celebrate the common aspiration of humanity and unique heritage of Chinese culture and that of the Olympic Movement. With a concept inspired by the famed Silk Road, our Torch Relay will break new ground, traveling from Olympia through some of the oldest civilizations known to man-Greek, Roman, 大学英语第二教研室编制 2012级《大学英语》2012-2013-2第二学期口语诵读材料 Egyptian, Byzantine(拜占庭), Mesopotamian(美索不达米亚), Persian, Arabian, Indian and Chinese. Carrying the message ―Share the Peace, Share the Olympics,‖ the eternal(永恒的)flame will reach new heights as it crosses the Himalayas over the world’s highest summit - Mount Qomolangma, which is known to many of you as Mt. Everest. In China, the torch will pass through Tibet, cross Yangtze and Yellow Rivers, travel the Great Wall and visit Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and 56 ethnic communities who make up our society. On its journey, the flame will be seen by and inspire more human beings than any previous relay. I am afraid I can not give you the full picture of our cultural programs within such a short period of time. Before I end, let me share with you one story. Seven hundred years ago, amazed by his incredible description of a far away land of great beauty, people asked Marco Polo whether his stories about China were true. And Marco answered: What I have told you was not even half of what I saw. Actually, what we have shown you here today is only a fraction(一小部分)of the Beijing that awaits you. Ladies and Gentlemen, I believe Beijing will prove to be a land of wonders to all of you, to athletes, spectators, and world-wide television audience alike. Come and join us. Thank you, Mr. President. Thank you all. They have met in business. They have met in education. They have met in the arts. Some would argue that these meetings leave us with a choice between East and West, but I believe the best future lies in the creative combination of both worlds. We can make Western ideas, customs and technology our own, and adapt them to our own use. We can enjoy the best of all worlds, because our tradition is, above all, one of selecting the best and making it our own. But, do Western styles and values threaten our identity? History makes it easy for us to think so-perhaps too easy. Some people seem to think that adopting Western customs, such as a bride wearing white-which has long been a color of mourning(哀痛) in China, instead of the traditional Chinese red for her wedding, is another submission to foreign intervention--a betrayal(背叛)of our heritage, they say. They fear that as we become ―globalized‖, we will no longer be Chinese. I do not agree. History teachers that a strong and confident nation is at ease in hearing from the outside world. The wedding of Eastern and Western cultures, whether in white gowns(长袍)or red, brings us variety. It is a rich banquet of special foods from all over the world. As an amateur(业余者)gourmet(美食家)of Chinese cuisine(菜肴), our superb flavors delight me. But my Chinese taste appreciates food from any land. I even allow the convenience of McDonald’s a place in my life without giving up my good taste. My grandfather taught me to hum tunes of Beijing opera from the time I was very young; they are deep in my spirit, part of my soul. I love Beijing opera, because it always reminds me of who I am. But I am also a fan of modern pop music, the No.1 fan of Spice Girls on campus. of course, it goes far beyond food, music and dance. It goes into values and ways of thinking about the world. Once upon a time, or so my teacher told me, a Chinese boy and an American girl had a squabble(争吵). Both wanted to keep a bunny rabbit they had found in the garden. Surely you’ve seen a rabbit sunning himself in the grass. Nothing is more lovable, nothing more natural. No wonder they wanted him. The Chinese boy played his er-hu. Happiness and joy, longing and passion, filled the air. The little rabbit swayed gently and began to move his ears in the direction of the music. He liked what he heard. The girl then took out her violin and played it to produce beautiful melodies(旋律)of her own. The rabbit began to bounce in her direction. So intent were the children on their own music that neither paid the other any attention. The competing melodies confused the little rabbit and he did not know which way to turn. Unable to attract the little creature, both children gave up; they walked away, in different directions, leaving the rabbit alone. But, what if they listened, what if they really heard each other’s music, instead of always playing their own tunes? When I hear the music of a violin, rich with the joys of men and women who came together and sang and danced. I hear echoes(回声)of the music of the grass lands, of the hills, of the rivers...of my own native land. Is music mine and yours, or is it ours? What I want to hear is the er-hu and the violin played together, in rhythm and in tune. Together, we can produce new and beautiful music, rich with textures(本质)and sounds that can only be made in harmony. The rabbit sits in the grass in the ever-warming sun. Waiting for us to play, waiting for the symphony(交响乐)to begin. Will he have to wait forever? The choice is ours. Thank you. Unit 7 Excellent Choice! 1. Ever since the accelerated development of human civilization, perpetual(长期的)scientific discoveries of nature have accompanied mankind all along the journey. It was by discovering the world around us that human beings have been able to live a more sophisticated life. However, as G.K. Chesterton once said ―one may understand the cosmos(宇宙), but never the ego(自我), the self is more distant than any star. Thus, a life is a journey of unrelenting(不松懈的)offers to discover more of ourselves. When I was six, I constantly pictured myself as an elegant and skilled pianist rendering(演 Xiao Bang’s nocturne(夜曲)beautifully on the stage, receiving award and applause after my 奏) performance. However, as I furthered my piano lessons, it was hard to be oblivious(不注意的) of my non-gifted skills. Sometimes I couldn’t help but have this feeling of despair, when I woke up to the reality and discovered that my goal was unrealistic. Brutal but real. It was the first time I had discovered that I couldn’t have it at all. When I was twelve, I thought the coolest job in the entire universe was to be a surgeon. I spent hours and hours watching the drama Grey’s Anatomy《实习医生格蕾》and couldn’t help falling in love with the kind of life those doctors lead on the screen. I was utterly mesmerized(着 by the scalpel(手术刀)and all those fancy medical terms they use. However, I stopped the 迷) dream about being a surgeon when I discovered that it was the idea of being a surgeon that appealed to me, not what it truly was. As a result, the dream ended and I discovered some more about myself. This year, I turned sixteen and I could proudly say I do not dream to be, but ascertain(确定) to peruse being a lawyer in the future. Since junior high school I had always been awarded the most eloquent(雄辩的)debater in every single debate I participated in. I can not only think logically, but also deliver my thought promptly(迅速地). My huge interest in philosophy also acts my reason in whenever I tried to argue with something equivocal(模棱两可的). Being aware of the obstacles and the hardships on the way becoming a great lawyer never panics me, for the simple reason that I have this faith and passion in what I am aspiring(向往) after. G.K. Chesterton was absolutely correct; the most complicated part of comprehending the world is the study of somehow smaller world, ourselves. I subsequently realized that growing up is a process that discover yourselves. We got to know what we truly are and become who we dream to be. As we shape ourselves and as we shape of our lives. We gradually become more aware of our limits and potentials, and consequently learn to adjust what’s out there, and by that ladies and gentlemen I’m proud to say that I have discovered part of myself, sue to(请求;要求) discovering today and definitely a lot more in the future. Emi: What’s wrong, Maggie? It isn’t something you buy now and then or pull down from the cupboard, dust off and use once or twice, and then return to the cupboard. Abundance is a philosophy; it appears in your physiology(生理), your value system, and carries its own set of beliefs. You walk with it, sleep with it, bath with it, feel with it, and need to maintain and take care of it as well. Abundance doesn’t always require money. Many people live with all that money can buy yet live empty inside. Abundance begins inside with some main self-ingredients(因素), like love, care, kindness and gentleness, thoughtfulness and compassion(同情). Abundance is a state of being. It radiates outward. It shines like the sun among the many moons in the world. Being from the brightness of abundance doesn’t allow the darkness to appear or be in the path unless a choice to allow it to. The true state of abundance doesn’t have room for lies or games normally played. The space is too full of abundance. This may be a challenge because we still need to shine for other to see. Abundance is seeing people for their gifts and not what they lack or could be. Seeing all things for their gifts and not what they lack. Start by knowing what your abundances are, fill that space with you, and be fully present from that state of being. Your profession of choice is telling you of knowing and possibilities. That is their gift. Consultants and customer service professionals have the ministrative assistants and virtual assistants have an abundance of coordination(协调)and time management. Abundance is all around you, and all within. See what it is; love yourself for what it is, not what you’re missing, or what that can be better, but for what it is at this present moment. Be in a state of abundance of what you already have. I guarantee they are there; it always is buried but there. Breathe them in as if they are the air you breathe because they are yours. Let go 大学英语第二教研室编制 2012级《大学英语》2012-2013-2第二学期口语诵读材料 of anything that isn’t abundant for the time being. Name the shoe boxes in your closet with your gifts of abundance; pull from them every morning if needed. Know they are there. Learning to trust in your own abundance is required. When you begin to be within your own space of abundance, whatever you need appear whenever you need it. That’s just the way the higher powers set this universe up to work. Trust the universal energy. The knowing of it all will humble you to its power yet let the brightness of you shine everywhere it needs to. Just by being from a state of abundance, it is being you. Unit 9 Welcome back 1. Airport closed. 5) You get lost. 6) Wallet stolen. 7) Hotel overbooked. 8) Rental (租赁的)car accident. 9) Visa expires (过期); go to the embassy (大使馆) to extend it. 10) Luggage is missing. 11) You miss your flight. 12) Taking orders , Expressing sympathy 1)I’m sorry to hear about it. 2)You must be feeling bad/terrible/awful about … 3)Don’t take it too much to heart. 4)Don’t let it get you down. 5)It’s no use crying over spilt milk. 6)I do hope it’s nothing serious. 7)What bad luck! 8)It could have happened to anybody. 9)I am deeply sorry to learn/hear about… 10)Is there any way I can help? 【反思】:我都明白上面句子的意思了吗,请模拟一个对话试试看呢: , Example 1: A: Let me tell you about my trip. First of all, my taxi was late. B: How annoying! Were you late? A: No, but then the flight was overbooked. B: I bet that was frustrating! A: It was, but they gave us free tickets for another trip. B: How exciting! A: Yes, but the tickets were only from Miami to Orlando! B: Orlando! Oh, too bad! A: Not really. My best friend lives in Orlando! 3. 又如~在表达“我看到他们从车库出来”的时候~突然想不起garage这个词~于是可以换种说法 ―We saw them get out of the …….the room where you keep the car‖ 来解释。 在采用迂回策略时~经常用到的句式有~It’s a kind of….,It’s a sort of…,Well, I can explain it like this… Ana: Kate! Welcome back! Kate: Thanks. Ana: You look tired. Kate: Ahhh… I’m exhausted (筋疲力尽)… Ana: What happened? Kate: What didn’t happen?! First, I left my hotel in New York at 6:00 this morning. But I forgot my briefcase, so I had to go back and get it. Ana: Oh, Kate … Kate: And then I missed my flight … Ana: Ohhh… Kate: So I had to wait two hours for the next flight. It was so frustrating. Ana: I bet. Kate: And I sat next to this lady who talked and talked, and this little kid kept kicking my seat! I almost lost my mind! Ana: Oh, no! That’s terrible. Where’s your suitcase Kate: Well, when I arrived, my bag wasn’t at the baggage claim(行李领取)! Ana: That’s SO annoying, I can’t believe it! Well, at least you made it! Ana: By the way, what were you doing in New York? Kate: I was there on business. Our head office is in New York, and I was at a national meeting. Ana: Oh, I see. Did that go well? Kate: It was great. Lots of interesting presentation. So much new stuff. I am so-o-o brain-dead now! Ana: Well, get some rest, and I hope they find your suitcase. Kate: Thanks, Ana. Examples from CET4: about food 1) W: You look like you are freezing to death. Why don’t you put this on? M: Thank you, it was so warm at noon, I didn’t expect the weather to change so quickly. Q: What do we learn from the conversation? (2006-6: 14) 2) M: It’s already 11 now. Do you mean I ought to wait until Mr. Bloom comes back from the class? W: Not really. You can just leave a note. I’ll give it to her later. Q: What does the woman mean? (2006-12:15) 3) M: I’m no expert, but that noise in your refrigerator doesn’t sound right. Maybe you should have it fixed. W: You’re right. And I suppose I’ve put it off long enough. Q: What will the woman probably do? (2010-12:16) 4) Man: Can you recommend something that a school boy of seven or eight will really like? Woman: I suggest this toy train, sir. It's an excellent brand, very popular, all over the world these days. Question: What is the man doing? (2009-12:12) 5) M: Ma’am, I hear you have an apartment for rent, can I take a look at it? W: Sure, you’re welcome any time by appointment, but I have to tell you the building is close to a railways. And if you can’t put up with the noise you might as well save the trip. Q: What do we learn from the conversation? ( 2006-6:18) 5. Ambition It is not difficult to imagine a world short of ambition. It would probably be a kinder world: with out demands, without abrasions(摩擦), without disappointments. People would have time for reflection. Such work as they did would not be for themselves but for the collectivity(全体). Competition would never enter in. conflict would be eliminated, tension become a thing of the past. The stress of creation would be at an end. Art would no longer be troubling, but purely celebratory in its functions. Longevity(长寿)would be increased, for fewer people would die of heart attack or stroke(中风) caused by tumultuous(激烈的)endeavor(努力). Anxiety would be extinct(灭绝). Time would stretch on and on, with ambition long departed from the human heart. Ah, how unrelieved(无变化的)boring life would be! There is a strong view that holds that success is a myth(神话), and ambition therefore a sham. Does this mean that success does not really exist? That achievement is at bottom empty? That the efforts of men and women are of no significance alongside the force of movements and events now not all success, obviously, is worth esteeming(敬重), nor all ambition worth cultivating. Which are and which are not is something one soon enough learns on one’s own. But even the most cynical(愤世嫉俗的)secretly admit that success exists; that achievement counts for a great deal; and that the true myth is that the actions of men and women are useless. To believe otherwise is to take on a point of view that is likely to be deranging(混乱的). It is, in its implications, to remove all motives for competence, interest in attainment, and regard for posterity. We do not choose to be born. We do not choose our parents. We do not choose our historical epoch(新时代), the country of our birth, or the immediate circumstances of our upbringing. We do not, most of us, choose to die; nor do we choose the time or conditions of our death. But within all this realm(领域)of choicelessness, we do choose how we shall live: courageously or in cowardice(胆怯), honorably or dishonorably, with purpose or in drift(放任自流). We decide what is important and what is trivial(平常的)in life. We decide that what makes us significant is either what we do or what we refuse to do. But no matter how indifferent the universe may be to our choices and decisions, these choices and decisions are ours to make. We decide. We choose. And as we decide and choose, so are our lives formed. In the end, forming our own destiny is what 大学英语第二教研室编制 2012级《大学英语》2012-2013-2第二学期口语诵读材料 ambition is about. Unit 10 A Better Place 1. New words to drill , Functions of comparing 1) That’s a little more expensive than I thought. 2)She’s much better than her sister. 3)It’s bigger than my place. 4)His apartment is nicer than my apartment. 5) My apartment/house is as … as …’s. 6) My apartment/house is different from …’s because… 7) My apartment/house is like …’s because… 8) My apartment/house is not as … as…’s. 9) I don’t like the place I live now. It’s too isolated. 10) I have a big balcony with a great view, I love it! 11) I don’t like living in the dorm. It’s too old-fashioned. 12) Her new place is really wonderful – it’s so roomy. 13) It’s important to feel comfortable in the place we live. 14) I think it’s great to live in a modern building, don’t you? 15) The dorm is too ramped. It’s too small for us. 16) But living on campus is more convenient. 17) We have a nice, cozy little apartment downtown 【反思】:我都明白上面句子的意思了吗,请模拟一个对话试试看呢: , Example 1: A: Hi, what’s troubling you? B: My friend has just invited me live with him in an apartment outside our campus. A: Well, if you want to, just go ahead. B: But I also miss the dorm life. When living in the dorm, I have nothing to worry about, I don’t have to pay the gas bills and everything else by myself. A: That’s true, but think about the advantage of living off campus. You will have complete freedom. B: That’s true; I could work late into the night without having to switch off the lights. A: Yes, every coin has two sides. It’s really hard to decide. If I were you, I would feel troubled too. 3. 许多初学者都会在对话中使用一些补白词~如 ―um‖、 ―well‖、 ―you‖ ―know‖、 ―let’s see‖ 等等。 Landlady: This is a great location. It’s really close to the subway station, and there’s a bus stop right across the street! Kate: Mmm, that’s convenient. Landlady: And this is the apartment! Kate: Mm-hmmm. Landlady: High ceiling, large windows, very spacious. Kate: Yes, it is big. It’s bigger than my place. Landlady: And, it has two bedrooms. A large bedroom and a smaller one. Kate: Mmm. Landlady: It’s a great place. And the rent is only 1,600 dollars a month. Kate: That’s a little more expensive than I thought. Landlady: Yes, well, rents are going up in this area, you know! Kate: Oh. Landlady: It has a lovely view of the ocean. Kate: That’s a view of the ocean? Landlady: And this is the garden! Kate: This is the garden? Landlady: And here is the kitchen … fully- equipped with all the modern conveniences! Kate: Ah, well, thanks for showing the place to me. I will definitely give this some consideration. Landlady: Well, I would encourage you to act quickly. This beautiful place won’t last long. Examples from CET4: about places 1) M: I don’t think I want to live in the dormitory next year. I need more privacy. W: I know what you mean. But check out the cost if renting an apartment first. I won’t be surprised if you change your mind. Q: What does the woman imply? (2011-12:16) 2) W: This picnic should be at the last one we went to, doesn’t it? M: Oh, yeah, we had to spend the whole time inside. Good thing, the weather was cooperative this time. Q:What do we learn about the speakers from the conversation? Their chief use for delight, is in privateness(独自)and retiring; for ornament, is in discourse(谈话); and for ability, is in the judgment and disposition of business. For expert and execute, and perhaps judge of particulars, one by one; but the general counsels(劝告), and the plots and marshalling(配制整齐)of affairs, come best form those that are learned. To spend too much time in studies is sloth(懒惰); to use them too much for ornament, is affectation; to make judgment wholly by their rules, is the humor of a scholar. They perfect nature, and are perfected by experience: for natural abilities are like natural plants, that need proyning (pruning) (修剪)by study; and studies themselves do give forth(发出)directions too much at large, except they be bounded in by experience. Crafty men contemn(蔑视)studies, simple men admire them, and wise men use them; for they teach not their own use; but that is wisdom without them, and above them, won by observation. Read not to contradict(反驳)and confute(驳倒); nor to believe and take for granted; nor to find talk and discourse; but to weigh and consider. Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed(吞咽), and some few to be chewed and digested(消化); that is, some books are to be read only in parts; others to be read, but not curiously; and some few to be read wholly, and with diligence and attention. Some books also may be read by deputy, and extracts made of them by others; but that would be only in the less important arguments, and the meaner(中等的)sort of books; else distilled(蒸馏得来的)books are like common distilled waters, flashy(浮华的)things. Reading maketh a full man; conference a ready man; and writing an exact(精密严谨的)man. And therefore, if a man write little, he had need have a great memory; if he confer little, he had need have a present wit; and if he read little, he had need have much cunning(狡诈), to seem to know that he doth not. Histories make men wise; poets witty; the mathematics subtitle; natural philosophy deep; moral grave; logic and rhetoric(修辞)able to contend. Abeunt studia in morse. Nay there is no stand or impediment(障碍)in the wit, but may be wrought (work的过去分词)out by fit studies: like as diseases of the body, may have appropriate exercises. Bowling(滚球)is good for the stone and reins; shooting for the lungs and breast; gentle walking for the stomach; riding for the head; and the like. So if a man’s wit be wandering, let him study the mathematics; for in demonstrations, if his wit be called away never so little, he must begin again. If his wit be not apt to distinguish or find differences, let him study the schoolmen; for they are cymini sectores.(死钻 )If he be not apt to beat over matters, and to call up one thing to prove and illustrate 牛角尖 another, let him study the lawyers’ cases.
