However, even if the pictures are taken automatically, someone still has to do all the paperwork and send out fines. Now a British company called EEV has come up with a computerized video system that can do it all. They suggest that all license plates (车牌照) should have a bar code as well as the usual number. The bar codes are just a group of lines like those you see on the packages of things you buy. EEV’s high-speed video camera system can read a bar code on a license plate even if the car is driving over 100 miles per hour. The computer controlling the system could then use the information from the bar code to find out the name and address of the driver using the car’s records. It can then print out the fine and send it to the owner of the car. The inventors also suggest that the system can also watch traffic to help find stolen cars. The new electronic system could be watching everyone that passes the cameras! Because of this, many people find the idea that ―big brother is watching you‖ is more of a worry than a few motorists getting away with driving too fast. Besides, some people will be very unhappy to realize that this new system can tell the police where a particular car has been. 1. B According to this passage, which of the following is TRUE? A. The camera in the past can’t take pictures of cars now as they speed along highways. B. The camera in the past can print out fines. C. The camera in the past can send out fines automatically. D. The camera in the past can catch cars breaking traffic roles. 2. A The new computerized video system can ____________. A. find stolen cars B. read a bar code on a license plate C. find out the name and address of the driver who drives too fast D. all of the above 3. B What’s people’s attitude to the newly invented system for motoring? A. People all agree with the newly invented system. B. People object to the newly invented system totally. C. Some people worry about the newly invented system. D. It is not mentioned in this article. (B) Animals cannot be considered equal to human beings because they do not have the same intelligence. 用心 爱心 专心 There are physical acts that animals share with people, but animals perform these acts instinctively (本能地); Whereas, human beings normally need to learn them. One instance of those is the way animals care for their young. A mother cat will instinctively begin licking the baby kittens as soon as they are born. The human mother has fewer instincts about her baby and often needs to turn to others, such as her own mother, a friend, or a neighbor to learn how to care for a baby. Some mothers are so anxious that they spend their entire pregnancy (妊娠期) reading books on the subject of caring for infants. Therefore, sales of books on pregnancy and care for children are always popular in urban bookstores. Other differences between animals and people are in social organization. People build houses and live in family groups, tribes, villages, towns or large cities. However, many animals, such as bears, never live in groups, but only contact other animals of the same kind to mate. Another difference is that animals live by the laws of nature, often killing other smaller animals for food. They have no feelings about killing even weaker animals of their own kind because in the world of nature, there is constant competition between animals, and only the strongest tend to survive. On the other hand, human beings apply their intelligence to creating societies and laws to prevent the act of killing other people. 4. A Animals share some physical acts with people _______. A. and both animals and people perform these acts by instinct B. but animals perform these acts by instinct while people learn them C. but people perform these acts by instinct while animals learn them D. and both animals and people learn them 5. A Books about pregnancy and care for babies sell well because__________. A. some mothers have no one to turn to for advice B. mothers are anxious to know what their babies will be like C. mothers don’t have many instincts about how to care for their babies D. mothers have a lot of such books to choose from 6. B Which of the following is the best title for this passage? A. Animals and Humans B. Instinct C. Lifestyle D. Best Sellers (C) The young policeman, Constable Rider, walked more quickly than usual because of the cold, but he did not consciously neglect any part of his work. His torch flashed on doorways and windows as he looked for anything suspicious, and when he thought that something was unusual, he went to try the door and window, probably unheard by the people sleeping in the room just above his head. As he turned a corner, he heard a slight rustling sound — it might be a cat, and it could even be a dog, although few dogs wandered about at night. It might be a pair of lovers, or it might be anything. But Rider saw nothing. 用心 爱心 专心 A cat then? Usually if you disturbed a cat, it jumped and ran off, and you heard or noticed something else. By doing a lot of night work, you learned to notice these things, but now all Rider noticed was the silence which had followed the rustling sound. So he acted cautiously. He did not flash his torch about the houses near the comer but walked on, and, a little away from the spot where he had heard the sound, stopped and bent his head, as if he was lighting a cigarette. A policeman who stopped to light a cigarette seemed the most unsuspicious policeman in the world. There was still no sound. There were bushes in the garden of the house where Rider had first heard it, and he knew that a man could hide there out of sight. But if he went back, it would warn any such man. So instead he stood and shone his torch at the nearest window, and as if he had noticed something unusual, he walked towards it and opened the wooden gate, which made no sound at all. He reached the entrance and shone the torch on the keyhole of the front door. As he did so, the rustle came again, this time much more softly. He looked round quickly. 7. A What was Constable Rider doing on this very cold evening? A. Looking for anything out of the ordinary. B. Looking for something that had been lost. C. Being careful not to disturb people. D. Being careless in carrying out his duties. 8. A When he heard the rustling sound, he _________. A. thought that it was probably not caused by a dog B. knew that he had disturbed a cat C. knew not to take any notice of such a noise D. realized that he had turned a corner 9. A As he then heard no more sounds, Rider decided _________. A. that he had been mistaken, and walked on B. that he might as well have a cigarette C. to flash his torch on a window near the comer D. not to show that he had noticed anything 10. B Why did Constable Rider not go right back to the house on the comer? A. He had seen a man hiding there. B. He didn’t want to use his torch. C. It would show that he had noticed something. D. There was still no sound from the garden. (D) The year was 1932. Amelia Earhart (埃尔哈特) was flying along from North America to England in a small one-engine airplane. M: Sure, for a while, but I’d make new ones. W: You certainly sound very confident. M: You know, actually, there is one thing I’d miss. W: What’s that? M: My dog! (Text 8) M: Hello. W: Hello, Mr. Andrews! This is Max from Ripley’s Realty. M: Hi. Have you found a house for me yet? W: Yes, I have a great house to show you on Padley Drive. It’s only $200,000. M: Oh, that’s too expensive for me. W: Well, I have another one on Bank Street. It’s only $85,000. But it only has one bedroom. M: Oh, that’s not big enough. W: Well, how about a house in the country? M: That sounds interesting. W: Yes, it’s fairly old, so it needs a little work. But it’s really nice, and it has a lovely- view. M: I think I will like it. (Text 9) M: Could you tell me where our chemistry lab is? W: Yes. It’s on the third floor of this building. M: Do you often do chemistry experiments there? W: Yes, once a week. M: What does your teacher often tell you to do when you are doing an experiment? W: He often tells us to look carefully and follow the instructions. 用心 爱心 专心 M: What must you do at the end of your experiment? W: We must put everything back in the cupboards and wash our hands. M: What else must you do before you leave the lab? W: We must turn off the electricity, shut the windows and lock the door. (Text 10) It doesn’t matter when or how much a person sleeps, but every needs some rest to stay alive. That’s what all doctors thought, until they heard about Al Herpin. Al Herpin, it was said, never slept. He was 90 years old when doctors came to his home in New Jersey. They expected to find out that he needed sleep of some kind. But they were surprised. Though they watched him every hour of the day, they never saw Herpin sleeping. He did not even own a bed. He never needed one. The only way that Herpin seemed to rest was to sit in a rocking chair and read some newspapers. Herpin offered the only probable explanation of his condition. He remembered some talk about his mother having been injured several days before he was born. Herpin died at the age of 94. 用心 爱心 专心 用心 爱心 专心
