sadly, today, languages are dying at an unprecedented rate. a language dies every 14 days. now, at the same time, english is the undisputed global language. could there be a connection? well i dont know. but i do know that ive seen a lot of changes. when i first came out to the gulf, i came to kuwait in the days when it was still a hardship post. actually,not that long ago. that is a little bit too early. but nevertheless, i was recruited by the british council along with about 25 other teachers. and we were the first non-muslims to teach in the state schools there in kuwait. we were brought to teach english because the government wanted to modernize the country and empower the citizens through education. and of course, the u.k. benefited from some of that lovely oil wealth. 但遗憾 mutuallyenglish-speaking nation on earth. and why not? after all, the best education -- according to the latest world university rankings -- is to be found in the universities of the u.k. and the u.s. let me put it this way, if i met a dutchspeaker who had the cure for cancer, would i stop him from entering my british university? i dont think so. but indeed, that is exactly what we do. we english teachers are the gatekeepers. and you have to satisfy us first that your english is good enough. now it can be dangerous to give too much power to a narrow segment of society. maybe the barrier would are in english, the journals are done in english, but that is a self-fulfilling . it feeds the english requirement. and so it goes on. i ask you, what happened to translation? if you think about the islamic golden age, there was lots of translation then. they translated from latin and 5 greek into arabic, into persian, and then it was translated on into the germanic languages of europe and the romance languages. and so light shone upon the dark ages of europe. now dont get me wrong; i am not against teaching english, all you english teachers out there. i love it that we have a global language. we need one today more than ever. but i am against using it as a barrier. do we really want to end up with 600 languages and the main one being english, or chinese? we need more than that. to haveenglish, they didnt have to pass an english test. case in point, einstein. he, by the way, was considered remedial at school because he was, in fact, dyslexic. but fortunately for the world, he did not have to pass an english test. because they didnt start until 1964 with toefl, the american test of english. now its exploded. there are lots and lots of tests of english. and millions and millions of students take these tests every year. now you might think, you and me, those fees arent bad, theyre 7 okay, but they are prohibitive to so many millions of poor people. so immediately, would focus on english. they want to give their children the best chance in life. and to do that, they need a western education. because, of course, the best jobs go to people out of the 8 western me tell you a story about two scientists, two english scientists. they were doing an experiment to do with genetics and the forelimbs and the hind limbs of animals. but they couldnt get the results they wanted. they really didnt know what to do, until along came a german scientist who realized that they were using two words for forelimb and hind limb, whereas genetics does not differentiate and neither doesgerman. so bingo, problem solved. if you cant think a thought, you are stuck. but if another language can think that thought, then, by cooperating, we can achieve and learn so much more. we want to do in life, and i thought about all the people i wanted to reach out to that i didnt, all the fences i wanted to mend, all the experiences i wanted to have and i never did. as ithought about that later on, i came up with a saying, which is, collect bad wines. 12 because if the wine is ready and the person is there, im opening it. i no longer want to postpone anything in life. and feel one real regret, ive lived a good life. in my own humanity and mistaked, ive tired to get better at everything i tried. but in my humanity, i also allow my ego 13 to get in. and i regretted the time i wasted on things that did not matter with people that matter. and i thought about my relationship with my wife, my friends, with people. and after, as i reflected on that, i decided to eliminate negative energy from my life. its not perfect, but its a lot better. ive not had a fight with my wife in 2 years. it feels great. i no longer try to be right; i choose to be happy. 那天我学到 that i grew up on the coast of england in the 70s. my dad is white from cornwall, and my mom is black from zimbabwe. even the idea of us as a family was challenging to most people. but nature had its wicked way, and brown babies were born. but from about the age of five, i was aware that i didnt fit. i was the black atheist kid in the all-white 18 catholic school run by nuns. i was an anomaly. and my self was rooting around for definition and trying to plug in. because the self likes to fit, to see itself replicated, to belong. that confirms its existence and its importance. and it is important. it has an extremely important function. without it, we literally cant interface with others. we cant hatch plans and climb that stairway of popularity, of success. but my skin color wasnt right. my hair wasnt right. my history wasnt right. my selfbecame defined by otherness, which meant that, in that social world, i didnt really exist. and i was other before being anything else -- even death. but there is something that can give the self ultimate 20 and infinite connection -- and that thing is oneness, our essence. the selfs struggle for authenticity and definition will never end unless its connected to its creator -- to you and to me. and that can happen with awareness -- awareness of the reality of oneness and the projection of self-hood. for a start, we can think about all the times when we do lose ourselves. it happens when i dance, when im acting. im earthed in my essence, and my self is suspended. in those moments, im connected to everything -- the ground, the air, the sounds, the energy from the audience. all my senses are alert and alive in much the same way as an infant might feel -- that feeling of oneness.我们创造了整个价值系统,以 及一个客观的现实,用以支持自我的价值。看看由个人形 essence, our connection to the infinite and every other living thing. we knew it from the 23 day we were born. lets not be freaked out by our bountiful nothingness. its more a reality than the ones us are taught. for example, have you ever considered that there are listening positions, places you can listen from? here are two of them. reductive listening is listening for. it reduceseverything down to whats relevant and it discards everything thats not relevant. men typically listen reductively. so hes saying, ive got this problem. hes saying, heres your solution. thanks very much. next. thats the way we talk, right guys? expansive listening, on the other hand, is listening with, not listening for. its got no destination in mind. its just enjoying the journey. women typically listen expansively. if you look at these two, eye contact, facing each other, possibly both talking at the same time. men, if you get nothing else out of this talk, practice expansive listening, and you can musicians have bigger brains. its true. you can do this in groups as well. its a fantastic antidote to schizophonia. to make music and sound in a group of people, whichever style you enjoy particularly. and lets take a stewarding role for the sound around us. protect your ears? yes, absolutely. design soundscapes to be beautiful around you at home and at work. and lets start to speak up non-muslims to teach in the state schools there in kuwait. we were brought to teach english because the government wanted to modernize the country and empower the citizens through education. and of of europe and the romance languages. and so light shone upon the dark ages of europe. now dont get me wrong; i am not against teaching english, all you english teachers out there. i love it that we have a global language. we need one today more than ever. but i am against using it as a barrier. do we really want to end up with 600 languages and the main one being english, or chinese? we need Then again, who's to say that certain types of irrational thinking aren't exactly what the world needs? Maybe you've had grand plans before, but stopped yourself, thinking: That's impossible or that costs too much or that won't benefit me. For better or worse, we kids aren't hampered as much when it comes to thinking about reasons why not to do things. Kids can be full of inspiring aspirations and hopeful thinking, like my wish that no one went hungry or that everything were free kind of utopia. How many of you still dream like that and believe in the possibilities? Sometimes a knowledge of history and the past failures of utopian ideals 37 can be a burden because you know that if everything were free, that the food stocks would become depleted, and scarce and lead to chaos. On the other hand, we kids still dream about perfection. For instance, the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, Washington, my home state -- yoohoo Washington -- (Applause) has a program called Kids Design 38 Glass, and kids draw their own ideas for glass art. Now, the resident artist said they got some of their best ideas through the program because kids don't think about the limitations of how hard it can be to blow glass into certain shapes. They just think of good ideas. Now, when you think of glass, you might think of colorful Chihuly designs or maybe Italian vases, but kids challenge glass artists to go beyond that into the realm of broken-hearted snakes and bacon boys, who you can see has meat vision. Kids already do a lot of learning from adults, and we have a lot to share. I think that adults 39 should start learning from kids. Now, I do most of my speaking in front of an education crowd, teachers and students, and I like this analogy. It shouldn't just be a teacher at the head of the classroom telling students do this, do that. The students should teach their teachers. Learning between grown ups and kids should be reciprocal. Now, adults seem to have a prevalently 40 restrictive attitude towards kids from every "don't do that,"don't do thisin the school handbook, to restrictions on school internet use. As history points out, regimes become oppressive when they're fearful about keeping control. Okay, so they didn't tell us to become doctors or lawyers or anything like that, but my dad did read to us about Aristotle and pioneer germ fighters when lots of other kids were hearing "The Wheels on the Bus Go Round and Round.Well, we heard that one too, but "Pioneer Germ Fighterstotally rules. One large children's publisher ironically saying that they didn't work with children. Children's publisher not working with children? I don't know, you're kind of alienating a large client there. (Laughter) Now, one publisher, Action Publishing, was willing to take that leap and trust me, and to listen to what I had to say.
