Features of speech simile A simile (明喻) is a figure of speech that directly compares two different things, usually by employing the words "like" or "as". e.g. Curley was flopping like a fish on a line. She walks as gracefully as a cat. Her eyes twinkled like stars My only memory of him is that he swayed on his heels like a palm tree. (paragraph 3) The room smelled like Chinese medicine, an imported faraway mustiness. Like ancient mothballs or dirty closets. (paragraph 4) metaphor A metaphor (暗喻) is a literary figure of speech that describes a subject by asserting that it is, on some point of comparison, the same as another otherwise unrelated object. e.g. All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances; — William Shakespeare When he tripped over his own tongue, he'd blame it on her: "See, Mom, it's all your fault. You set a bad example". (paragraph 9) What infuriated my mother most was when my brother cornered her on her consonants. (paragraph 10) ●Simile is a metaphor. But all metaphors are not similes. ● A metaphor is an equation while simile is an approximation. ● A simile compares two things to create a meaning, while a metaphor is a figure of speech that makes use of something to mean something else. Using appropriate metaphors appeals directly to the senses of listeners or readers, sharpening their imaginations to comprehend what is being communicated to them. Moreover, it gives a life-like quality to our conversations and to the characters of the fiction or poetry. Metonymy Metonymy is a figure of speech (or trope) in which one word or phrase is substituted for another with which it's closely associated (such as "crown" for "royalty"). 它是由某一事物名称来代替与该事物有关联的另一事物的名称,简而言之,就是借用甲来 关于同志近三年现实表现材料材料类招标技术评分表图表与交易pdf视力表打印pdf用图表说话 pdf 示乙,但前提条件是甲必须与乙关系密切和本质上有相似之处。比如:“The pen is mightier than the sword” In a corner, a cluster of lab coats made lunch plans. Alliteration It means “letters of alphabet”. It is a stylistic device in which a number of words, having the same first consonant sound, occur close together in a series. e.g. But a better butter makes a batter better. // A big bully beats a baby boy. It creates a musical effect in the text that enhances the pleasure of reading a literary piece. It makes reading and recitation of the poems attractive and appealing; thus, making them easier to learn by heart. Furthermore, it renders flow and beauty to a piece of writing. Personification Personification is a figure of speech in which a thing, an idea or an animal is given human attributes. The non-human objects are portrayed in such a way that we feel they have the ability to act like human beings. ●Look at my car. She is a beauty, isn’t it so? ●The wind whispered through dry grass. ●The flowers danced in the gentle breeze. it serves the purpose of giving deeper meanings to literary texts. It adds vividness to expressions as we always look at the world from a human perspective. Writers and poets rely on personification to bring inanimate things to life, so that their nature and actions are understood in a better way. parallelism Parallelism is the use of components in a sentence that are grammatically the same; or similar in their construction, sound, meaning or meter. Parallelism examples are found in literary works as well as in ordinary conversations. ●Like father, like son. ●The escaped prisoner was wanted dead or alive. ●Easy come, easy go. The use of parallel structures in speech or writing allows speakers and writers to maintain a consistency within their work and create a balanced flow of ideas. Moreover, it can be employed as a tool for persuasion as well because of the repetition it uses. transferred epithet A transferred epithet is a figure of speech in which an epithet (or adjective) grammatically qualifies a noun other than the person or thing it is actually describing. ●"cheerful money," "sleepless night," and "suicidal sky." “移就”,指有意识的把描写甲事物的词语移用来描写乙事物的修辞 方法 快递客服问题件处理详细方法山木方法pdf计算方法pdf华与华方法下载八字理论方法下载 。一般可分为移人于物、移物于人、移物于物三类。具有使文句更简洁生动、使语句表达力强、给人想象的空间给人以无穷诗意的作用。 onomatopoeia Onomatopoeia is defined as a word, which imitates the natural sounds of a thing. It creates a sound effect that mimics the thing described, making the description more expressive and interesting. Onomatopoeia, on the other hand, helps the readers to hear the sounds the words they reflect. Hence, the reader cannot help but enter the world created by the poet with the aid of these words. The beauty of onomatopoeic words lies in the fact that they are bound to have an effect on the readers’ senses whether they are understood or not. ●The buzzing bee flew away. ●The sack fell into the river with a splash. ●The books fell on the table with a loud thump.
