Cornelia Hughes Dayton Presents “Taking the Trade: Abortion and Gender Relations in an Eighteenth-Century New England Village”
Discussion Questions:
1. “Both [Amasa Sessions and Sarah Grosvenor] were from prominent yeoman
families, and neither a marriage between them nor an arrangement for the support
of their illegitimate child would have been an unusual event for mid-eighteenth-
century New England” (19). This quote describes the basic financial and social
situation of the young girl involved. If this is true, from where did the pressure to
abort the unborn child come?
2. According to the article, was the trial of Hallowell, Amasa Sessions, Zerviah
Grosvenor, and Hannah Grosvernor in 1745 (3 years after Sarah?s death) based on
the abortion or the young girl?s death? What does this say about abortion during ththe 18 Century?
3. What was Hallowell?s punishment? (Refer to page 21) Why might this be
significant?
4. Describe the “sexual double standard” that Dayton argues (21). Also, on page 30,
Dayton explains the elusive reasons Amasa and Sarah did not marry. Using what
Dayton states as well as your own interpretation(s), why did Amasa refuse to
marry Sarah?
5. To what does “taking the trade” refer (24)?
6. On page 28, Hannah (Sarah?s sister-in-law) describes the fetus as “had been hurt
and was decaying” while her younger sister said it was “„a perfect child? even „a
pritty child.?” What may have caused the differences of description?
7. Did Sarah?s parents know of the “miscarriage”? What conclusions can you draw
about generational differences in 1740s Pomfret?
8. How does social status play a role in the trial? Consider the prominence of the
two involved families and what made them prominent.
