Proposition: China should establish English as an official language. Opposition: China should not establish English as an official language. If China can establish English as official language, we can have more chances to acquire knowledge, raise position in the company, spread Chinese culture by English. We have been received english courses, yet there are lots of people who can not speak out and they learned it just for exams. If China can establish English as official language, it must be helpful for all the people in China. There are 3 reasons why we should establish English as official language. Firstly, the definition of official language does mean the English should replace mandarin everywhere, it only lies in the government office such as the law, treaty, contract being translated by english. It will not influence ordinary people’s life. On the contrary, they can grasp two languages, it also marks the development of modern civilization. Secondly, we establish English as official language not only can help the policy-making, but also boosts the economy. Since under the background of world globalization, everything becomes global not to mention the policy and economy. English as official language we can communicate with more countries as so to makes the policy understandable and transparent. As for economy, international trade is getting more frequently around the world, when negotiates pact on the business, Using English as an official language can reduce both misapprehension on the same point and avoid language barrier. The main market for Western company is in India and china. why India can easy attract foreign company? A very important reason is that they have establish english as official language and no language barrier during the business transaction. Even though China's economy is doing a lot better than the U.S. in this unfavorable economic downturn, US is still the largest economic power in the world. The US relies on China and China relies on the US. Therefore, in order for these two countries to cooperate effectively, a mutual language is needed. Thirdly, the Culture has been measured the most important factor for the development in this new era and traditional Chinese culture is beginning to capture the attention of the world, KongFu, especially, has had a great impact on the millions of people who first learned about China through it. From that, they may come to China and learn about other aspects of this culture, such as traditional operas like the Beijing and Sichuan ones. Asian nations have long known about the greatness of ancient Chinese culture. By using english as official language, there is no any language blocks we can be better off spreading Chinese culture, for example, the Four Books of Confucianism (The Great Learning, The Doctrine of the Mean, The Analects of Confucius, and The Book of Mencius), which can definitely improve China’s image and let more foreigners learn Chinese culture so as to make Chinese culture walk abroad. By what I have mentioned above, ladies and gentlemen, our side strongly believe the development of China will be much better if English is established as official language! = The first debater in cons(曹化婷): Honorable judges, ladies and gentlemen, Just now, the affirmative stated their opinions that china should establish English as an official language. As leader of the opposition, I don’t agree with them. I will want to ask you a question: Will the French make English their official language? Of course not, they regard French as the most beautiful language in the world. So do we. Therefore, we strongly hold that china should not establish English as an official language. I will develop my arguments into the following points. Firstly, some countries which made English their official language often had a colonial background. Due to the reason of British colonial history, local people began to speak English at an early age; that is to say, English became the official language of these countries gradually. However, China is an independent and great country, and in recent years, our international status has improved greatly, we should use our language and culture to influence other countries. Thus, it’s not necessary to establish English as official language. Secondly, our language has a broad mass base; with such a large population speaking Chinese, it’s fairly difficult to kill the dominance of Chinese. Thirdly, Chinese is closely associated with our culture. It deeply rooted in Chinese culture. It took several centuries to develop it into mature Chinese. In the same way, we also need a long time to erase it. Therefore, giving up the original language to learn a foreign language is not a wise choice. We learn English to communicate with foreigners, but there is no need establishing it as the official language. So our side disagrees with the standpoint that China should establish English as an official language. Free Debate 1. The second debater (李志骏)in pros: Can you define the word “ official language” ? And explain why car plate is in English letters? The definition of official language: International language,easy for communication English are wildly used in powerful countries like Great Britain and the U.S.A. Mahatma Gandi once said: no nation and no culture in this world can live if it attempts to be exclusive. If we don’t use English to connect world, North Korea would be desolated Culturally speaking, though China has a long and great history and culture, few foreigners can understand it because of the language barrier. If English becomes official language, it will be helpful for spreading Chinese traditional culture and improve Chinese image The establishment of English as official language also is beneficial for policy making: Using English will make more countries understandable, make policy transparent. Besides, the establishment will bring great economy benefit. Firstly, it will offer more job opportunities like going abroad teaching English. Take Jacer fro example. Since Philippine has been colonized once in history and establish English as official language. Philippino learn more culture and have better our future development. 2. The second debater(孔友山) in cons: I suppose that China should not use English as the official language. Because our mother tongue is Chinese, if you establish English as the official language, it will bring a lot of troubles. Firstly, Chinese has a broad mass base. As a language of having large population , it is not easy to be replaced by English. Then imagine your first name is Wang, will you be willing to change into Li? Of course not! Chinese is our mother tongue. It is difficult for us to use English naturally. What’s more, we only learn English to communicate with our classmates or foreigners, but you should know, the others don’t need English in their daily life. it is unnecessarily for us to use English as an official language. 3. The third debater (储彩云)in pros: What is official language? It is a language used in the national official situation. One country can have one or more official languages. As everyone knows, English is most widely used language in the world. According to statistics, there are about 400 millions native English speakers in the world; about 70 countries establish English as their official language. They take up seven tenths of the world’s wealth. One of every five persons may speak English if you can not speak English that means you will lose 70% of opportunities. Second, to establish as our official language is the only powerful way to let the Chinese to learn or improve their grasp on English effectively. No one will look down upon you if can speak a fluent English. Instead, they will be proud of you. Therefore, as a national reconciliation, we will not be look down when we use two official languages. On the contrary, if we use English as our official language, we will improve our nationality or people’s cultivated manners, science qualities, humanity accomplishment or professional qualities. As we know, that many countries those are rider, cleaner and more stable then china. If we only speak Chinese, we are unable to function in the world around us. 4. The third debater(支京亚) in cons: If English is established as official language. It will harm the pride of the Chinese people badly. Besides, English is not commonly used in China, so it will bring about a lot of trouble understanding them. What’s more, the contact wit h the foreigners is not so common in China. And it will provide some officers with a convincing excuse to turmoil the policies that they cannot understand the files from the center government. English requires more words and paper to express the same meaning, which contrasts the idea of an environmental-friendly society. 5. The second debater (李志骏)in pros: If English can be established as official language, there will be no language barriers any more. More communications and cooperation is possible. Let’s look at India and Japan. Using English as official English, India has spread its advanced tech in software. While Japan is also good at manufacture. But comparatively speaking, it is rarely known worldwide since Japanese is not international language. What’s more, tourism industry will be more prosperous. We all know Thailand is top 1 popular tourism country nowadays. But our country has much more cultural relics and tourist side with vast tourism resources. Why China cannot even be counted as top 3? Language barrier is one of the important reason. 6. The second debater(孔友山) in cons: I want to remind you that not all of us have mastered the use of English, so it can’t be spread to anyone, but we all know Chinese .And Chinese is gradually studied by more and more countries. Therefore, we should adhere to use Chinese as our official language. So, I don’t agree with you ! 7. The third debater (储彩云)in pros: Actually, we use English as official language in many foreign treaties, agreements and contract. Establishing English as an official language will not infringe on or deprived of any people’s right to speak mandarin. In other worlds, it means Chinese maintain the original position. We use English as official language at the same time to make contribution to world civilization to affect the development of world civilization more deeply. We need mutual exchanges to improve ourselves. Now we are in an era of information, we should use the most convenient language in communication, especially in the Mass Communication. There are more than 70% e-mails wrote in English; There are more than 60% TV programs proceed by speaking English; There are more than 70% books or newspapers produced by the using of English. As the official language, there is more than 90% international meetings use English for their discussing. When we suffer the internet, we have 80% of chance to see English words. At last, imagine that if you want to introduce Chinese to foreigners, which language should you use? Actually, we should establish English as an official language. 8. The third debater(支京亚) in cons: To hire translators requires lots of funds. Chinese has a broad mass base, a large population base language is not so easy to kill. We learn English to communicate with foreigners, not necessarily must be in English as the official language. Language is related to culture and history of a country. Chinese was, is and will be the only official language of China. The point of having an official language is to facilitate communication between ethnicities and localities within a nation, and we already have Mandarin for that. Whips 1. Chinese and English both our official language. We just use them on the basis of situation, external or mainland... First of all, it's necessary for China establish English as an official language. First for policy: communication with more and more foreign countries. Second for economics: 1. Promote national competitive As the advance of the society, with the rapid advance of the globalization, English is essential in modern society, English contributes a lot to the competitive of economy, politics, culture of the countries. All in all, establish English as an official language is a better rote for China to connect the world. As the world is getting "smaller and smaller," people in the world need a standard language for communication, and make business and information exchanges more effectively. 2. To prove the feasibility of this, we in line discuss the topic with our opposite party. While whether China should do that, our ultimate goal is to make our nation more strong than before, is not it? Realized the gravity of this policy, then tries to take a overall consideration. Now i summarize our viewpoint again. First, extensive and profound Chinese culture has a long history which is rooted deeply in people’s heart. It is hard for people to convert their thinking way and habit, as we know there is big difference between Chinese culture and English culture. If we pay more attention to English, it is more likely to ignore our native culture. Second, as a populous country, this policy is extremely difficult to take into effect. In recent years, while an increasing number of people are busy learning English, the attention to the study of our mother tongue is on the decline. Should such a trend continue, it would definitely lead to an undesirable result in the long run. Third, we can not deny the importance of learning English, but at the same time we should realize that for most of people have little chance to speak with foreigners. For those, who are forced to learn english, are very bitter and tedious. Thus we should improve the real effect and interest of learning English instead of passing the examination or obtain a creditable position and so on. Finally, the promotion of our language is the key to the prosperity of our nation’s culture, hence, most importantly, people’s awareness of the study of our own language should be raised. Now I would like to comment on the performance of both side. As for the proposition side, the first debater gives a long speech with improper pronunciation and pace. The most important thing is that he should not read the manuscript and should have eye contact with audience. The second debater is very confident speaking fluently which makes his speech authoritative. What he should do is to hold his point tightly. He should sway with others. Besides, vocal variety should be enhanced. The third debater has a perfect pronunciation but she is too shy. She should stand out and speak loudly. The fourth debater gives a long statement in a low volume. The manuscript should be concise. As for opposition side, the first speaker has a clear thinking with proper speaking pace. But she should enhance her confidence next time. The second and third debaters with vocal variety are very good at debate. But they should find weak point in arguments of proposition side and reject their point. The fourth debater has a good vocal variety but with low volume. She is so shy, hence confidence should be enhanced next time.
