A lot of tough choices.” 1. “ROUGH BARS” Newt Briggs, Las Vegas Mercury “Just really entertaining. The pictures and scenes grabbed and transcribed. Nice. And avoided „I? and „my? for the most part.” 2. “FAITH, POLITICS, FAMILY” Kate Silver, Las Vegas Weekly “Just kind of a scary subject. But valuable. I didn?t quite gain sympathy for them – but the writing held me fascinated.” 3. “SHOPLIFTING: NOTES ON THE NATIONAL PASTTIME” Stacy J. Willis, Las Vegas Weekly “Story-telling done well. Great conversational lead-in. Fun. Intermingled the facts well.” Honorable Mention: “IN DEFENSE OF TELEMARKETING” Stacy J. There is also – surprisingly – a good deal of humor.” 2. “GIRLS, GIRLS, GIRLS!” Joe, Schoenmann, Las Vegas Weekly “A potentially lucid subject treated even-handedly, with plenty of context. The reader is thrown into a world he really doesn?t want to know about – but finds compelling.” 3. “RURALLY SCREWED” Andrew Kiraly, Las Vegas Mercury “Great lead. Geoff Schumacher, Las Vegas Mercury “The writer embraces the personal (the column about the soldier killed in Iraq) and attacks the practical (the zoo issue) with equal zest. The column about the writer seemed beside the point of such a column but read well.” 2. Matt O?Brien, Las Vegas CityLife “Writer conveys a distinct feeling for local life and issues. The personal blends well with the objective.” Best Local Non-Staff Column 1. George Knapp, Las Vegas Mercury “A writer who respects his audience. Indexed stories aren?t overdone, and are clearly labeled.” 2. Las Vegas Mercury “Strong artwork and intriguing headlines invite readers inside, but the busy covers tend to have too many invitations.” Best Page Designer 1. Benjamen Purvis, Las Vegas Weekly “A really solid portfolio, great studio-photography well art directed. Keep up the great work.” 3. “IN IT” Bill Hughes, Las Vegas CityLife “Nice composition with peak action on back guitarist.” Best Multiple Feature Photos 1. “LIFE IN THE RURALS” Bill Hughes, Las Vegas CityLife “Hughes? photos capture the side of Vegas that few ever see, while fully representing the feeling of life outside the glitz of the strip. Powerful, yet controlled photos.” 2. “POETS ON THE RANGE” David Robert, Reno News & Review “Simple and uncomplicated photos. Each portrays a person who does not fit the readers image of what/who a poet is.” 3. “BACK IN BLACK” Christine H. Wetzel, Las Vegas Mercury “Camera use of still-focus subject and motion-focus of background lights is effective conveying a world unfamiliar to many readers.” Honorable Mention: “LIGHTS OUT” Bill Hughes, Las Vegas CityLife “The subject matter has been done before, but Hughes? eye and ability to photograph with his own personal take, make it worth a look and enjoyment.” Best Portrait 1. “DOWN BUT NOT OUT IN RENO” David Robert, Reno News & Review “Subject in photo is almost daring the reader to open the paper and read the story.” 2. “THE PRICE OF HEROISM” Bill Hughes, Las Vegas CityLife “Portrait engages the reader immediately by use of sharp focus on subjects eye and soft focus periphery.” 3. “POETS, PAINTERS, MADMEN” David Robert, Reno News & Review “The effectiveness of this picture is it?s main attribute. The photo of the barn instills the idea of huge inventory. Eye drawn to center of ad. Spot color does not overwhelm the message with framework. Nice touches in gradients.” 2. “RAIN” Rebecca Enerson and Kitt Watkins, Tahoe Daily Tribune “Allure, simple, spot color attracts focus and great image ad.” 3. “ELDORADO/JOKERS WILD” Chris Mackey, Las Vegas Review-Journal “It?s Green!! It?s Irish!! It?s got white space!! It?s got a call to action!! It?s too busy!! I?m hungry!! Good job!!” Best Multi-Color Ad 1. “DART DISCOUNT LIQUOR” John Simon and Rebecca Enerson, Tahoe Daily Tribune “Great linear layout brings ad focus to advertiser. This image ad works. I don?t drink but this ad makes me thirsty. This ad has it all!” 2. “SANTA MARIA RANCH” Diane Kneeland and Terri Thomas, Nevada Appeal “This framed layout gives the ad great depth of field. A little too much copy but white space makes it work.” 3. “LAKE TAHOE GOLF COURSE” Megan Coup and Rebecca Enerson, Tahoe Daily Tribune “As our sports editor from Mississippi might say: „This ad is perfect in every way except for two things.? The logo is too small and blue against the black ad is hard to read. Maybe the logo and map should trade places.” Best Special Section – Advertising 1. “SOUTH LAKE TAHOE VISITORS GUIDE” Tahoe Daily Tribune “Slick! Good editorial/advertising ratio. I wish I had more time to read it. Pagination layout strong. Tasteful presentation. Nice use of color. Utilizing glossy format, you ladies (Michele Armstrong and Tara Pielaet) have done well.” 2. “AT HOME WEEK” Reno Gazette-Journal “This publication flows. The photography, editorial and advertising are seamless. Easy read with great ideas. It makes me want to get rid of the milk crates and cinder blocks. Good layout.” Honorable Mention: “SKI AND BOARD TAHOE” Michele Armstrong, Tahoe Daily Tribune “Layout and artwork make this ad work! I would use a different color type above Tahoe, as this type doesn?t read well. It was what cost you a higher finish.” Advertising General Excellence 1. Reno Gazette-Journal “The Reno Gazette-Journal is filled with a great mix of large and small space ads. The „local? ads are well designed, contain a call to action and use white space. The many color ads make good use of the color. It?s not gratuitous. The pages are designed to give the ads space while allowing the editorial to breathe as well. The classified section is robust. The main header is weak but the category headers are very helpful. Once you are into the section it?s easy to navigate, and „Homes? – good grief – 48 pages of liner and display ads with pertinent editorial/content. The house ads could use help. Boring and the same cars.com ad repeated within the same paper. Overall – an excellent advertising effort. Well done.” 2. Las Vegas Review-Journal “The Review-Journal is loaded with ads and plenty of color. There is a great collection of large and small space ads that are generally well designed. Small space local advertisers actually make their way into „A? section. The ads in the Entertainment Section support the editorial content, are plentiful and are well designed. Ad placement doesn?t detract from the paper?s appearance but it still showcases the ads no matter the size. The classified section is robust. The main header is ok as are the category headers. The section is easy to navigate. One classified section ad contained an awful auto description. Too much color!! I liked the yellow on liners, but it seems oversold and eventually became white noise. Overall – excellent.” 3. Tahoe Daily Tribune “The Tahoe Daily Tribune contains an excellent mix of large and small space retailers. They do an excellent job with real estate (Tahoe Real Estate). The ad count is excellent and is a good mix of local, regional and a smattering of national ads. Page layout gives good play to all ads. The classified section is robust and has a good main header. The reverse category headers get lost against the smaller reverse ads. The local ads are generally well designed but some tend to be on the busy side – too much copy. „Service Guide? – well done. The slick stock ski section was very impressive. Overall – a little short of excellent. Very well done.” ADVERTISING AWARDS – ALL WEEKLIES Best Large-Space Ad 1. “FLOYD?S ACE” Ollie Williams, Pahrump Valley Times “Good use of complimentary colors and the layout flows easily. Client?s message is clear. Nice touch creating art instead of stock image.” 2. “WINKEL MOTORS” Lori Lacey and Michele Brown, Reno News & Review “Interesting use of headline type and composition. Background art relates to headline, but client?s message is a little lost. However, good looking ad.” 3. “PIER 1” Irena Beffa, Reno News & Review “Good choice of complimenting colors, headline is eye catching. Ad looks clean and sharp to the eye.” Honorable Mention: “SHARKEY?S CASINO” Adele Hoppe, The Record-Courier “Good use of background art, type alignment easy to read. Headline color – could?ve chosen better.” Best Black-and-White Ad 1. “THE ART OF SELF ESTEEM” Marianne Mancina, Reno News & Review “Photo and headline tell the whole story. Those five words tell you – you want it – why you want it – and who to go to get it!! Pure art.” 2. “SUMMER AT THE GUGGENHEIM” Roger Tinch, Las Vegas CityLife “American pop icons – ad does pop! Lots of information is well organized. Use of reverse headline and text effective.” 3. “NORTH SHORE OUTFITTERS” Staff, Tahoe World “Photo grabs attention. Font size and styles well coordinated.” Honorable Mention: “PAHRUMP NUGGET HOTEL & GAMBLING HALL” Heather Adams, Pahrump Valley Times “Lots of information – well organized, consistent use of type-style, appropriate and fun clip art. Eye-catching border.” Best Spot Color Ad 1. “SUN LOAN COMPANY & TAX SERVICES” Ollie Williams, Pahrump Valley Times “Great use of spot color. Draw the readers eye directly to the important items in the ad – right up to the phone number.” 2. “MORRISON UNIVERSITY” Irena Beffa, Reno News & Review “Using color, in this case green, to highlight money as the answer for a great career is done well. Morrison University should be happy with your efforts.” 3. “STINGER?S GOOD TIME BAR & GRILLE” Sharon Wisecarver, Reno News & Review “This ad came close to capturing the top award in this category. We would have preferred the words „Happiness & Contagious? in solid black – lost a little impact.” Best Multi-Color Ad 1. “LAS VEGAS CITYLIFE PROMO AT NEW YORK NEW YORK CASINO” Roger Tinch and Sandy Rea, Las Vegas CityLife “Very hip and modern look to the ad – colors with choice of background art and typeface make this a great promo piece.” 2. “PASS IT ON THRIFT” Lauren Shearer, Tahoe World “Excellent choice in colors and use of knock-out type. The colors help a small ad stand-out on the page.” 3. “PLAYOFFS SPORTS PUB” Terri Bistline, Desert Valley Times “Colors are eye-catching and complimentary. The type is a bit too busy to read, but overall: attractive ad.” Best Special Section – Advertising 1. “LOCALS 2003” North Lake Tahoe Bonanza “Excellent layering (front cover) mast-head with photo. Good layout use of featured individual?s photo with copy. Advertisements have a very local, hometown feel. Interesting vertical layout for all ads.” Best In-House Advertising Promotion 1. “THIS IS YOUR LAST ISSUE!” Roger Tinch, Las Vegas Business Press “It?s doubtful that there is any stronger way to get the reader?s attention than your approach. Good rack card.” 3. “WIND DOWN, CATCH UP” Heather Adams, Pahrump Valley Times “Outstanding use of type, graphics and layout. This ad could appear anywhere in the paper and would dominate the page. Great reader appeal.” Honorable Mention: “ADVERTISING IN THE RENO NEWS & REVIEW” Andrea Diaz-Vaughn, Reno News & Review “Testimonials have a broad reader appeal, and utilizing one from the pet play house?s Lisa Jaramillo, along with a photo of man?s best friend is a great closer.” Advertising General Excellence 1. Tahoe World “This paper contains an excellent mix of small and large space local advertisers. Ads are generally well designed and color is effectively utilized. Good ad count – but doesn?t overwhelm page layout. Classified section is robust, easy to navigate and the category heads are easy to see. Well done overall.” 2. Northern Nevada Business Weekly “This paper contains well designed ads that effectively support the editorial content. Excellent ad count. Page layout of ads allows editorial to breathe. Good mix of small and large space ads. Classifieds dominated by real estate, house ads are timely – not boring. Good testimonials.” 3. Las Vegas CityLife “This paper is chock full of full color ads with a good balance of small space black and white ads. The ads are well designed. Some of the color use seems gratuitous. Classified headers are weak and the section is jumbled. The ads support the editorial content.”
