Section One—Usage of It It 在句中可以作代词,代表刚提到的东西或双方都知道的东西;它还可以用来代表天气、时间、自然环境、距离等。It还有一个很重要的用法,即作先行词,代表句子的实际主语或宾语;它也可以用来改变句子结构,使句子的某一成分得到强调。 1。作句子的形式主语。 1)代表不定式 It takes two to make a quarrel. (To make a quarrel takes two.) It is considered impolite to ask a lady her age. It’s a great honor to know you. 2) 代表动名词 It’s no use crying over split milk. (Crying over split milk is no use.) It’s no good waiting for him. It’s been a lot of fun talking to you. 3) 代表that 引导的从句 It’s clear to everyone that she was angry. (T hat she was angry is clear to everyone.) It’s not our fault that this has happened. It is suggested that he (should) be sent to hospital immediately. 4) 代表wh-引导的从句 As long as he finishes his work, it doesn’t matter when he comes to the office. (…when he comes to the office doesn’t matter.) It’s a miracle how he managed to escape from the enemy camp. It has not been decided yet whether or not I should go on with my study. 2。作句子的形式宾语 1)代表不定式 They found it difficult to get along with him. (They found to get along with him difficult.) I feel it my duty to report this. He made it a rule to have a family meeting once a month. 2) 代表从句 I think it best that you (should) stay with me. (I think that you should stay with me best.) He soon made it clear why he had asked for a conference. Please see to it that all the windows are closed before you leave. 3。用于强调句中(it is/was…that/who…) 1)强调主语 It was she who put forward that suggestion. It is your ability that counts here. 2)强调宾语 It is that painting that he sold at a good profit. It was the football match that they were talking about. 3)强调状语 It was through me that he had got the present job. It is because of him that I have given up my career. Exercises: 1. To prepare a large party takes a lot of time. 2. To work for enemies of our nation is against our principles. 3. To sleep in that house again is unimaginable for her. 4. Going to his concert is worthwhile. 5. For anyone to escape from that heavy-guarded place is considered impossible. 6. Trying now to make up for the wrong you’ve done would be no good. 7.
