Pocahontas 2 Journey To A New World：波卡洪塔斯2新世界之旅 Casey Emmer Film Presentation U.S. History In Film Mr. Reed September 17, 2006 Pocahontas 2: Journey To A New World For Mr. Reed’s U.S. History In Film class, I chose to present the 1998 film Pocahontas 2: Journey To A New World. This film is a direct to video sequel to the 1995 Disney movie Pocahontas, released three years before. This movie picks up form where the first movie left off. In it, John Ratcliffe, who was arrested by the colonists close to the end of Pocahontas, has lied to King James I about his experience in the New World and has encouraged the king to declare war on the Indians. To counter this threat, Pocahontas volunteers to go to England as ambassador for her people. Because this movie is one of many direct to video sequels to popular Disney movies, the voice actors from the first movie were used, except for those of John Smith and John Ratcliffe. There are differences however. Unlike the first Pocahontas movie, 95% of it is set in England, Captain John Smith plays a small part in this movie from his mysterious “death” to his sudden reappearance close to the climax. Grandmother Willow plays an important but brief role in the beginning. Finally, in the terms of the movie’s comedy relief, Percy is now afraid of Ratcliffe, his former master, and Meeko almost gets along with Percy. This movie does have some similarities to the movie that preceded it. It begins in England by introducing us to Smith and Ratcliffe. As always, when the scene shifts to the New World, Pocahontas makes her entrance by teasing her friend, Nakoma. Comedy relief comes in the form of little animals, being Meeko the raccoon, Flit the hummingbird, and Percy the pug dog. Right after her entrance, Pocahontas turns to Grandmother Willow for advice on choosing her path. Since this movie was produced by the television animation division of Walt Disney Studios, viewers will notice less computer graphics are involved. I’ve noticed this during the Grandmother Willow scene of the movie. The production team that did this movie did come up with new characters to add to the old cast like John Rolfe and King James. egments like the blowing leaves and Pocahontas choosing her path are familiar parts S from the first movie, only some changes are made. To compare history with the movie, I found information about Pocahontas’ journey to England, and the involvement of John Rolfe. In real life, five years after the John Smith affair, Pocahontas met an English colonist named John Rolfe during a trip to Henricus, thVirginia. Both were married on April 5, 1614, and had a son named Thomas Rolfe, thborn on January 30, 1615. Their marriage was successful in keeping peace between the colonists and the local Indian tribe. In 1616, Pocahontas, now twenty one years old, traveled with the Rolfes and eleven Powhatan Indians to England, only as a marketing ploy to lure people to the New World. While she was there, she learnt John Smith was still alive, after being wounded during their last encounter, and had convinced Queen Anne to treat her with respect. During the trip, Pocahontas was entertained at society gatherings and brought before King James. She lived with Rolfe in the London suburb of Brentford until 1617. In March that year, before the ship for America could set out to sea, Pocahontas became sick because of an unknown illness and died afterwards as a result. She was buried at Saint George’s Gravesend. In the movie, it’s exactly one year after the John Smith affair. John Rolfe is single, Casey Emmer Film Presentation U.S. History In Film Mr. Reed September 17, 2006 with only a near sighted maid for company, and he travels to the New World just to see the Indians and deliver the message from the king. Pocahontas is still single at this time, and only one Indian comes with her on the trip. During her stay in England, she is mistreated by the king, since Ratcliffe lied to the king about Pocahontas. Pocahontas doesn’t marry John Rolfe, as she still longs to see John Smith. In the end, she travels back to America without getting sick. Normally, for a direct to video movie, there wouldn’t be many reviews for it. I was able to find one review on one of the websites recommended by Mr. Reed. One critic on www.imdb.com stated the movie wasn’t quite as interesting as the original feature film, because of the animation and changes in character. While some people may agree with this review, I, for one, disagree with it, despite the changes I noticed while I watched this movie for the project. For historical accuracy, I give this movie a C-. For settings of Jamestown and London thas they were in the early 17 century, this movie gets an A. For being a musical, this movie gets an A+. For use of comedy this movie gets an A. For use of old and new characters, this movie gets an A+. For being a sequel to a popular Disney movie, I give this movie an A. In short, this was a good movie for me to watch.
