You should write at least 120 words following the outline given below in Chinese: 1.在21世纪报纸面临着被网络取代的危机 2.出现这种现象的原因 Nowadays, the role of newspaper is being seriously challenged by the booming IT industry or Internet. As a matter of fact, in today’s world where nearly everything starts with an “e”, newspaper will be rep laced by other computer-based means of information transportation. First of all, newspaper can never match the Internet in its speed. Actually, information of any kind can be transported digitally at up to 300 million meters per second. In a world of efficiency, newspaper can be defeated for this reason solely. Besides, with the Internet, information can be transmitted in a three-dimentional way, which consists of sound, live-show and even interaction, whereas in the paper, only words and photographs could be presented. Therefore, the former is more vivid and descriptive. In conclusion, though newspaper is still regarded as indispensable for our daily life, it cannot match the Internet in many aspects. A Full-Time School Called Life Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition entitled A Full-Time School Called Life. You should write at least 120 words. You are enrolled in a full-time school called “life”. Each day in this school you will have the opportunity to learn lessons. You may like the lessons or hate them, but you have designed them as part of your curriculum. Why are you here? What is your purpose? Humans have sought to discover the meaning of life for a very long time. What we and our ancestors have overlooked, however, is there is no one answer. The meaning of life is different for every individual. Each person has his or her own purpose and distinct path, unique and separate from anyone else’s. As you travel your life path, you will be presented with numerous lessons that you will need to learn in order to fulfill that purpose. The lessons you are presented with are specific to you; learning these lessons is the key to discovering and fulfilling the meaning of your own life. As you travel through your lifet ime, you may encounter challenging lessons that others don’t have to face, while others spend years struggling with challenges that you don’t need to deal with. You may never know why you are blessed with a wonderful marriage, while your friends suffer through bitter arguments and painful divorces, just as you cannot be sure why you struggle financially while your peers enjoy abundance. The only thing you can count on for certain is that you will be presented with all the lessons that you specifically need to learn; whether you choose to learn them or not is entirely up to you. The challenge here, therefore, is to align yourself with your own unique path by learning individual lessons. This is one of the most difficult challenges you will be faced with in y our lifetime, as sometimes your path will be radically different from others’. But, remember, don’t compare your path to that of the people around you and focus on the disparity between their lessons and yours. You need to remember that you will only be faced with lessons that you are capable of learning and are specific to your own growth. This process may not be easy, but the rewards are well worth the struggle. A Society of Employees Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition entitled A Society of Employees. You should write at least 120 words. Our society has become a one of employees. A hundred years or so ago only one out of every five Americans at work was employed, i.e., worked for somebody else. Today only one out of five is not employed but working for himself. And when 50 years ago “being employed” meant working as a factory laborer or as a farmhand, the employee of today is increasingly a middle-class person with a substantial formal education, holding a professional or management job requiring intellectual and technical skills. Indeed, two things have characterized American society during these last 50 years: middle-class and upper-class employees have been the fastest growing groups in our working population growing so fast that the industrial worker, that oldest child of the Industrial Revolution, has been declining in numerical importance despite the expansion of industrial production. Yet you will find little if anything written on what it is to be an employee. You can find a great deal of very dubious advice on how to get a job or how to get a promotion. You can also find a good deal of work in a chosen field, whether it be the mechanist’s trade or bookkeeping. Every one of these trades requires different skills, sets different standards, and requires different preparations. Yet they all have employeeship in common. And increasingly, especially in the large business and government, employeeship is more important to success than the special professional knowledge or skill. Certainly more people fail because they do not know the requirements of being an employee than because they do not adequately possess the skills of their trade; the higher you climb the ladder, the more you get into administrative or executive work, the greater the emphasis on ability to work within the organization rather than on technical abilities or professional knowledge. Advertisements on TV Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition entitled Advertisements on TV. You should write at least 120 words following the outline given below in Chinese: 1.现在电视广告越来越多 2.出现这种现象的原因 3.你个人是否支持电视广告 Today more and more advertisements are seen on TV. Few programs are not intervened by ads. In a competitive economy, the consumer usually has the choice of several different brands of the same product. Thus, manufacturers are confronted with a problem how to keep sales high enough to stay in business. They solve this problem by advertising. Through advertising, each manufacturing company tries to convince consumers that its product is special and worthwhile. Personally, I am in favor of TV ads because most of them are interesting and informative. But there is no denying that some of them are tedious and boring. So I think TV stations are faced with an arduous task to strengthen the control of ads, to improve their quality and to make them more authentic and attractive. Are Electronic Dictionaries Good? Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition entitled Are Electronic Dictionaries Good? You should write at least 120 words following the outline given below in Chinese: 1.很多学生使用电子词典 2.使用电子词典的弊端 3.我的看法 As the enthusiasm for learning English grows, more and more students like using electronic dictionaries instead of the traditional ones. But are electronic dictionaries really good? Obviously, electronic dictionaries are more time-saving, which is the main reason for its popularity. However, let’s look at the other side of the c oin. As an electronic dictionary user myself, I’ve found that the biggest deficiency of electronic dictionaries is that they do not contain as much information as traditional dictionaries. They only give us the meaning, not the usage of the word. So they make it difficult for us to use the word properly, especially the word that has more than one meaning. On the whole, I think a learner should have a good dictionary at hand and treat the electronic dictionary as a makeshift. Only in this way can one improve a great deal in English study. Choosing a Career Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition entitled Choosing a Career. You should write at least 120 words following the outline given below in Chinese: 1.选择职业是人生的大事 2.选择职业时应该考虑的因素 3.我的观点 Choosing a career is one of the most important things in our life. It may affect the whole course of our life. So we have to consider it carefully before we make the choice. Many factors need to be taken into consideration in choosing a job. For example, the salary offered by the company, the opportunity to get promotion, the benefits provided, such as holiday and insurance. If I were to choose a job, I will make a career planning. I will first try to gather information from many resources. Then I will carefully study the job I want to choose to decide whether it is suitable for me and whether I’m capable of doing it. In conclusion, we can’t be too anxious in hunting for the job. Most importantly, we should better equip ourselves with necessary knowledge and skills, so we can get the job that is appealing to us. Is Stress a Bad Thing? Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition entitled Is Stress a Bad Thing? You should write at least 120 words following the outline given below in Chinese: 1.有的人害怕压力 2.有的人认为压力并不是一件坏事 3.我的看法 In the last few years quite a number of people have chosen to do something less competitive instead of highly-paid hard work. They are afraid that the stresses and strains of work will rob them of joy and happiness and do them harm both physically and mentally. However, some people believe stress isn’t as bad as it is often supposed to be. Unless it gets out of control, a certain amount of stress is vital to providing motivation and challenge, and to giving purpose and significance to an otherwise meaningless, idle life. People under stress tend to realize their full range of potential. Stress is a natural part of everyday life and there is no way to avoid it. What we can do is develop our adaptive abilities to deal with it rather than to escape from it. Do Scores Deserve Privacy? Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition entitled Do Scores Deserve Privacy? You should write at least 120 words following the outline given below in Chinese: 1.有人认为考试分数是个人隐私,不应该公布 2.有人认为为了激励学生,分数可以公布 3.我的态度 As to whether scores should be publicized, students hold different opinions. Some think the scores should be made known to all. One can get encouragement and make progress by comparing his own scores with others’, but for other students, they consider scores as their privacy, and make it public a violation of their privacy. In my opinion, it’s good to publicize the scores. After all, our goal of study is to acq uire knowledge. After a student compares his scores with others’, he will realize what his strengths and weaknesses are. Then he can make more progress in the future. Besides, we should not pay too much attention to the scores. What matters most is whether we have mastered necessary knowledge and skills. Happiness Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic: Happiness. You should write at least 150 words. Happiness is very important to our life. Shakespea re said, “One who is unhappy can never get a beneficial result.” This good advice tells us the best method to make our mental and physical lives strong and healthy. A happy mind often makes a strong body. The good physician must notice whether his patient is happy or not. If not, he must find a method to make his patient happy. Then he can cure the sickness quickly. Unhappiness is a kind of sickness. It hurts one’s health and shortens one’s life as the physical sickness does. People wear gray hair because of their anxious hearts. Young men become old quickly because of their hopeless minds. Therefore one who hopes to do great things in the world must have a happy mind. Holiday Economy Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition entitled Holiday Economy. You should write at least 120 words following the outline given below in Chinese: 1.假日经济的由来 2.假日经济的益处 3.假日经济带来的问题 The long holidays have caused unexpected great travel craze and brisk economic activities. Holiday spending, not only adds fuel to the Chinese economy, but also leads to the creation of a new term “holiday economy”. Some economists are in favor of the holiday economy. They believe it has many advantages. First, tourism-based holiday economy will raise consumption, up spending and, therefore, help to spur the domestic demand. In addition, it benefits tourism, transportation, hotel and service industries and enables them to thrive during holidays. However, others overstate its disadvantages and hold that it brings undeniable problems. Thousands and thousands of tourists flood into scenic spots, jamming railway stations and airports, causing some over-crowdedness and safety problems. I believe its advantages far outweigh its disadvantages. After all, it greatly benefits our overall economy. Immoral Behavior in Public Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the title Immoral Behavior in Public according to the following outline given in Chinese. You should write at least 120 words. 1.经常在公共场合见到各种不道德行为,叙述你的一次相关经历 2.这些不文明的行为会有哪些影响 3.我们应该怎样改变这种现象 To witness immoral behavior in public, one needs only to have a look at the bus stop. There are always so many people waiting for buses at the bus stop. Few of them stand in line as required. Whenever a bus comes, lots of people just run to the bus and try to get on in chaos. Many of them push each other in an effort to get on first. Immoral behavior in public causes a series of problems. One of the most serious ones is that it may exert a negative impact on our sense of social responsibility. If we allow these immoral behavior to go on, we are ignoring other people’s rights and feelings, and in turn, we too will be disrespected someday. The improvement of this phenomenon is certainly not easy. With an eye on practical implementation, I propose that society make it clear in every way that people who fail to respect the common good will be seriously punished. Strict policies regarding this should be made to correct this phenomenon as soon as possible. Is TV a Plus or a Minus? Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition entitled 21st Century: Is TV a Plus or a Minus? You should write at least 120 words TV is not only a convenient and cheap service of entertainment, but also a splendid mass medium of communication. People only have to pay once to buy the TV set, then they can sit at home enjoying the items on TV. All they have to do is to push a button or turn a knob, and they can see plays, films, operas and shows of every kind. TV keeps us well-informed about the current events at home and abroad and the latest development in every field. The most distant countries and the strangest customs are brought right before us. On TV everything is much more living and much more real. As a matter of fact, it has become so much a part of human life that a modern world without television is unimaginable. Some people even say that life without television is not worth living. Some people argue against TV. They think the TV viewers do nothing while watching TV. The viewer does not even have to use his legs if he has a remote control. Many people are glued to seats to watch TV. They become so dependent on that that it begins to control their lives. As a result, TV is taking up too much of a person’s life and making him lazy, not to mention its harmful influence upon him, such as the items of violence and pornography on television in some countries. On the whole, there are more advantages than disadvantages in the use of TV. Y et different people may have different attitude toward TV. But we must realize that television in itself is neither good nor bad. Its value to people and society depends on how we look at it.
