《出师表》
The Memorial to the King before Setting off for War
1、臣本布衣，躬耕于南阳。
I was originally a farmer tilling land in Nanyang.
2、苟全性命于乱世，不求闻达于诸侯。
I merely managed to survive in the times of turbulence and had no intention of
seeking fame and position from dukes.
3、先帝不以臣卑鄙，猥自枉屈，三顾臣于草庐之中，咨臣以当世之事。
With disregard to my low social status and poor knowledge, the late king
condescended to visit me at my thatched cottage three times to consult with me
about the current events of the situation.
4、由是感激，遂许先帝以驱驰。
I was so grateful that I promised to serve him.
5、后值倾覆，受任于败军之际，奉命于危难之间，尔来二十有一年矣。
Twenty-one years have passed since we suffered a serious military defeat, I
received my assignment in the time of the setback and began to do my work at a
moment of the crisis.
6、先帝知臣谨慎，故临崩寄臣以大事也。
The late king well knew my prudence and entrusted me in his deathbed the duty of
assisting Your Majesty in governing the county.
7、受命以来，夙夜忧叹，恐托付不效，以伤先帝之明。
Since then, I have been worrying and sighing day and night for fear that I should
do harm to the late king’s illustrious fame if I could not be effective.
8、故五月渡泸，深入不毛。
That’s why I led an army to cross the Lu River in May and went deep into the
barren district.
9、今南方已定，甲兵已足，
Now the whole south is under our control and we have plenty of fighters and
armaments.
10、当奖帅三军，北定中原，
It’s exactly the time to reward our armyman so as to go northward to conquer the
central plains.
11、庶竭驽钝，攘除奸凶，兴复汉室，还于旧都。
Although I am already a worn-out horse and blunt knife, I would still do my best
to root out the treacherous evildoers, rejuvenate the Han Dynasty and move our
capital back to Luoyang.
12、此臣之所以报先帝而忠陛下之职分也。
I owe this to the late king and wish to demonstrate my loyalty to Your Majesty.
