Feeling that she still cherishes a deep love for Rochester, Jane returns to Thornfield, and gets married to Rochester, who has been blind and lost a hand. Title: Jane Eyre—A Common But Uncommon Woman Abstract: After appreciating “Jane Eyre” carefully, the first question that is proposed in my heart is what’s Jane Eyre like on earth. Considering Jane Eyre’s all features, I think Jane a common but uncommon woman. She may be portrayed as ordinary because she is shy, petite, and plain-featured. But at the same time, she is extraordinary because of her noble soul and independent spirit. I compared her to a piece of grass. Though with weak appearance, it has a tenacious root. Therefore, I draw the conclusion that Jane Eyre is really a common but uncommon woman. Masses of thoughts come up in my heart. In regard to a thing, unless it’s completely uncommon, it can’t attract us to a great extent. As it comes to a human being, however, he can impress us very much only when he is both ordinary and extraordinary. Jane Eyre can be considered a person of this kind, a common but uncommon woman. Now let me show you what a common woman and an admiring angel she is! Jane Eyre, the protagonist and narrator of the famous novel “Jane Eyre”, has been a well-known image together with the author Charlotte Bronte for more than a hundred years. But since the first time I was introduced to the book, I have been lost in it and happy to throw my thoughts into Jane Eyre’s world to follow the respecting woman. “What a pity girl and how wretched she is!” maybe this is your first view after a rough browse of the book. That’s because your attention was drawn by the heavy suffering that Jane experienced, just as I ever did. However, when you have appreciated all words and thoughts of Jane’s in her hard time, you will be persuaded to admit how common but uncommon she is! The idea will be held intensely especially after several times’ reading. What’s Jane Eyre like on earth? In the nature, nothing can be more common than the little grass, small, weak, plain and with so great a group. What’s worse, nobody cares what will become of any piece of grass. Even if it disappears, no pity will be fixed on it. In the same way, Jane Eyre is just a piece of grass in her circumstance. Indeed, she is just such a woman, petite, shy and plain-featured. Almost nothing that is valued on a girl can be traced on her. Thus, with certainty, Jane Eyre can’t be more ordinary in other people’s eyes. However, if you only think so, you’ll be unlucky to miss the point. Behind Jane’s plain appearance, there is a great soul shinning. Just like the grass, underground lies so tough a root. Therefore, though the grass appears to be so weak and common, in fact, it’s the most tenacious smart. Even the fierce storm has to give in to it. Similarly, the plain woman, Jane Eyre, possesses an independent mind and a rebellious spirit. She allows nothing to threaten her autonomy and repeatedly succeeds in asserting herself and maintains her principles of justice, human dignity and morality. She also values intellectual and emotional fulfillment. What’s more, she holds strong belief in gender and social equality, which challenges the Victorian prejudices against woman and the poor. All of this is her “root”. The “root” encourages her to face everything bravely and properly. For this, she is indeed uncommon. For this, She is worthy of being respected. Please let me quote some brilliant excerpts to show you. “I resisted all the way. This was a new thing for me.” Jane Eyre says this as she is taken to be locked in the red-room after she had fought back when she was struck. Jane has asserted her rights since she was still young. When freedom is threatened, she will revolt in no time. “Do you think I can stay to become nothing to you? Do you think I am a machine without feeling? Dou you think, because I am poor, humble, plain and little, I am soulless and heartless? You think wrong! And if God had given me some beauty and much wealth, I should have made it as hard for you to leave me, as it is now for me to leave you. I am not talking to you now by the standards of custom your spirits and the world, it is my spirit that addresses as if we stood before God, equal, as we are!” All of this is from Jane’s inner heart. She voices her love boldly and frankly, in front of her employer Mr. Rochester, regardless of any barriers between them. What a sacred claim and what a woman out of ordinary! In those days, who else could be brave enough to perform like her? “Meanwhile, in spite of Mr. Rochester’s opposition, I continued to work as Adele’s governess.” Though love seizes a vital position in her heart, she will always adhere to her belief; she will never drop her independence. That’s basement of her love, dignity and everything. Such is Jane, and we can never forget her plain face but noble soul; we can never forget her weak body but magnanimous and charming personality; we can never forget her poverty in life but richness in spirit; we can never forget her search for freedom and her confident attitude towards life. That’s what makes her great. Jane Eyre, a piece of little and general grass, a respecting and praiseworthy angel, a common but uncommon woman.
